USA Today Bestselling Author, Dani René, brings you a brand new emotional taboo, age gap romance with darkness and steam pouring from the pages.

DAMIEN

Handsome. Dangerous. Tortured.

From a young age I learned love is a smokescreen. It does nothing, but bring heartbreak and pain. My solace came from the darkness, from watching fear flicker in their pretty eyes. It’s all I knew.

Until her.

We’re forbidden. We shouldn’t crave this. But there’s no longer a way out.
Unless we find common ground, unless I let her in.

NESRIN

Polished. Pristine. Broken.

From a young age, I found solace in the dark, comfort in pain, and relief with a blade. It became normal to hide away, to watch the crimson trickle out as contentment flooded me. It’s all I knew.

Until him.

It’s illicit. It’s morally wrong. But desire has a mind of its own.
I thought I was free. But this love was a cut so deep, it would never heal.

My Thoughts:

Please make sure to read the Author’s Note.  She’s included a warning for those that need it.  She’s also included a Playlist for your listening pleasure.

Nesrin does what she needs to in order to feel some peace of mind.  Her tale is definitely not for impressionable teens and young adults.  She’s found a way to cope with her life but she needed the right teacher to show her there are other ways to do that.

Damien seems to have something in common with Nesrin.  In some ways they’re not so different.  One difference though is that Damien is very frank about who he is and what he wants.  He is an alpha male with some interesting appetites.  But as you get to know him you will see that you’re never too old to change.

In places this story is heartbreaking.  There are times where you’ll want to put your arms around Nesrin and tell her that everything will be alright.  But think about it, is it because you want to say the right words or because you truly care and want to help.  It may give you pause and think about those around you.  You just never know what the people around you are going through.  We all hide behind a mask – no pun intended.

This seems to be a tale of wanting.  It might be of wanting something for yourself or maybe something that you think you don’t deserve.  Maybe it’s the forbidden or to take your mind off things.  There may be times where you get a flush to your cheeks and wanting no distractions while reading.  There are all types of emotions here so expect to go on one wild ride that you don’t want to get off of.

This is not a fairy tale but I could see it as a soap opera.  It’s a dark reality that you need to go in to with your eyes wide open.  Don’t skip either because you just never know what you might have missed.  The author has a very creative mind.  She does a great job of blending reality with fiction.  She comes up with things you wouldn’t think possible.  But if you’ve ever watched the Oxygen or ID network, the scenes she’s come up with could be ones that you would see there.  This story may make a good book club read – there’s just so much to discuss.

If I had to nitpick about anything it would have to be that I thought there came a time where things felt rushed.  We’re getting toward the end and there came a time where it seemed as if a light switch was shut off so that we could get to that happy ending – things flipped so quickly.  I know that our author didn’t want to make her story too long but it just seemed as if we hit a stone wall because of the way things changed.  Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters and am looking forward to see what book two has in store.
