Excerpt:

When they reached her front door, Lily took off his jacket and handed it to him reluctantly. “Thanks. I won’t be needing this anymore.”
Gabe’s gaze lowered to the front of her dress. She looked down and heat flooded her face. The damp silk molded her breasts and pebbled nipples like a second skin. He rubbed her arms, and the feel of his hard palms on her skin made her breath catch. She gazed into his midnight eyes as a spark ignited inside her. She hadn’t felt a man’s touch in a long time and suddenly ached with yearning.
He inched closer and tucked an errant strand of her hair behind her ear. “I’m sorry about your dress. I hope it isn’t ruined. Send me the dry-cleaning bill.”
“That’s not necessary,” she protested softly. She stood very still. His dark eyes pinned her with desire, and she couldn’t move an inch.
His gaze lowered to her mouth, then flickered to her eyes. She licked her lips and waited, breath suspended as her heartbeat quickened.
His fingers trailed along her jaw as he cupped it and leaned forward. “So soft,” he murmured. He kissed her cheeks and the corners of her mouth before his lips captured hers. She rose on her tiptoes to meet his kiss. He wrapped his arm around her waist and drew her forward, holding her close.
Lily’s heart thumped so loudly, she was certain he could hear it. She could barely breathe, let alone think. All she wanted was for him to kiss her again and again. She was stunned by her immediate reaction to him as her body heated with desire.
“I want to taste you,” he murmured between nibbling kisses. His tongue teased the seam of her lips, and she parted them instantly, welcoming the intimate invasion of his tongue. His kiss was gentle, but commanding. Bold, and she didn’t want to stop him. He deepened the kiss and her body went limp. She clutched his shoulders as his tongue and lips pleasured her.
“You taste sweet. Like berries and champagne.”
“Mmm,” she sighed into his mouth as the last shred of reserve melted away. “You taste like tequila. And you smell divine. Vetiver by Guerlain?” she whispered.
Surprised, he drew back and studied her eyes. “Yes, how did you guess?”
“I have a highly trained nose.”
He kissed the tip of her nose. “Do you now?”
Basking in the haze of his attraction, her lips lifted lazily. “I spent six months in Paris refining my sense of smell.”
“Among other things,” he murmured, depositing a kiss on her neck.
She shivered and pulled away. “What do you mean?”
He smiled. “I think you’re classy and beautiful.” He took her hand and placed an open-mouthed kiss in the center of her palm, sending tingles straight to her toes. She closed her eyes and moaned as a quiver wracked her.
He groaned low in his throat, a sound so raw and sexy, her eyes flew open. Blowing out a harsh breath, he released her and put some distance between them.
Frowning slightly, she stared at his mouth. “Why did you—”
“Stop?” he finished ruefully. “Because you’re tipsy, and I’d better go before I stop being a gentleman.” He pinched her chin and held her gaze. “Let me make this evening up to you.”
“How?” She held her breath.
“A real date. Have dinner with me.”

SYNOPSIS:

A Justice Hustlers Novel
She’s beautiful, unpredictable–and on the run from dangerous men. But this
ex-side chick is ready to risk everything to help others in trouble . . .
Fed up with her married Miami boyfriend, savvy Dulce has no problem stealing his
drug-dealer stash and fleeing to her family in the Caribbean. But when she gets bored in rural Santo Domingo, she escapes on a sugar daddy adventure to Puerto Rico. Her new life is one endless party, until she’s caught in Hurricane Maria–and witnesses the brutal collision of colonization and climate change, as well as the international vultures who plunder the tragedy for a financial killing, making shady use of relief funds to devastate the island even more. Broke, traumatized, and stranded, Dulce’s only chance to get back to New York may be a sexy, crusading journalist who’s been pursuing her. But is she hustling him or falling for him?
Meanwhile, New York-based mastermind thief Marisol already has her hands full fleecing a ruthless CEO who’s stealing her family’s land in Puerto Rico, while trying to get her relatives out alive after the hurricane. An extra member in her crew could be game-changing, but she’s wary of Dulce’s unpredictability and reputation for drama. Still, Dulce’s determination to get justice draws Marisol in, along with her formidable Lower East Side Women’s Health Clinic’s heist squad. But their race-against-the-clock plan is soon complicated by powerful men who turn deadly when ex-side chicks step out of the shadows and demand to call the shots . . .

Praise for Aya de Leon and her novels
“Staking out space for women of color in the heist-fiction genre, Aya de Leon’s smart, sly writing is a knockout.” –Andi Zeisler, Bitch magazine

“This well-written and enjoyable installment in de Leon’s unique, feminist, urban crime-fiction series . . . infuses satisfying power in both plot and character.”
Booklist on The Boss, STARRED review

My Thoughts:

Dolores “Dulce” Garcia does what she has in order to survive. This author certainly has an interesting way to introduce her readers to her main character. You will feel sorry for her. Others may wonder, “How did she let herself get into that situation in the first place?” But she has good survival skills and she had to learn those skills starting at a young age.

It’s a story where you will have to pay attention. Scenes can go from present to past and it may take a minute or two to realize the change. There are other characters that may add to that confusion because your focus is on Dulce. This also made me feel as if things were going a little slow – you will need to have patience. Don’t try to speed read because it just may add to the confusion.

What I liked is that the author spins a story around an actual natural disaster. I also liked that she used her platform to make a statement but it might get lost for some readers. A lot will depend on if the reader is looking for lighter fare or one where their mind needs to be engaged. I don’t think this is a book for a first time reader of the author’s work. Getting to know her Justice Hustlers series first may give you some indication of her writing style. So I’m not ready to give up on Ms. De Leon just yet. I also need to check into her series to get to know her and how she goes about creating that series world.

Excerpt:

This is a terrible idea. I can’t stay here.” I wished there was
more force behind my voice, more sound, but all I could get
out was a squeak of protest.

Between arguing with David, answering a million questions
about the shooting, and even more from the hospital
staff to determine whether my head had been damaged further,
what little voice I had was shot. It had been a long,
arduous morning. The shock from being shot at was still
buzzing underneath my skin, but it was now secondary to the
utter disbelief that the place Case believed I would be safest
was under his roof.

When he told me he was placing me in protective police
custody and taking me to a safe house, never in a million
years would I have guessed he meant his house. I was wondering
if maybe he was the one who hurt his head when he
took me to the ground.

“What about Hayes? Someone shot at me today. You took
a bullet for me this morning. You can’t put your son in the
line of fire. I won’t allow it.” All of the things I wanted to
do to emphasize my point, I couldn’t. There was no crossing
my arms over my chest thanks to my jacked-up elbow. There
was no stomping my foot in aggravation thanks to the soft
splint holding my ankle in one position. There would be no
yelling, since my voice could barely be heard, so all I was
left with was a glare. Unfortunately, Case ignored my dirty
look and continued to usher me inside the house.

His morning had been even longer than mine, and he
looked as haggard as I felt. After making sure I was secured
inside the hospital with an armed guard, he’d had to deal
with the crime scene and the slew of reporters who showed
up on the scene. Since a shooting in a high traffic and very
public place like the hospital was bound to make national
news, Case mentioned it was more than likely the Texas
Rangers were going to get called in to help investigate. He
didn’t sound thrilled at the prospect, he also didn’t seem too
concerned by the fact he was shot. He still had a red stain
and a hole in his tan uniform shirt from where the bullet,
which was meant for me, skimmed his shoulder. The wound
required ten stitches and now was dressed in a stark white
bandage much like the one wrapped around my injured hand.

We were quite a pair.

THE TWO-WEEK ARRANGEMENT
By Kendall Ryan
Release Day: June 4

About the Book:

Dear Sexy AF Intern,

I know you don't particularly care that I'm the CEO of this company, and you're just an intern. I also know you're not impressed by my power or my wealth, and that's fine.

You think you've got me all figured out from working alongside me for two weeks, but you don't know me. Not really.

You don't know that I'm a single dad to twin toddlers, or that those two little girls matter more to me than this entire hotel chain.

I'm not interested in starting something deep and meaningful, but what I am interested in is the way your body reacts to mine when we're in the same room. You probably assume the concentration on my face is work-related, when in reality, I'm figuring out which I want more--to nail you against the wall, or to bend you over my desk.

While you're too disciplined to act on it, I'm not. And the night you stepped into my limo, all bets were off.
