Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from Grey’s Promotions and the author. I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The past was all he could see...until him.

When you're the sheriff of Brigs Ferry Bay, certain things are expected of you.
Marry a local girl, settle down, have a few kids. You know, the small-town dream.
But I've got a secret I'm terrified will get out.

I'm gay.
Not bi. Not curious. Not confused.
Just gay.
So, settling for that dream won't be happening.

If this secret gets out, the people I serve and protect, especially my father, won't be accepting.

I'm not brave like my high school sweetheart, Kian.
The day he came out was the day I had to let him go, and with it, love.

I've done a great job of pretending I'm perfectly fine being single. Until a villainous and annoyingly charming new B&B owner, Dante Kincaid, rolls into town. The spark between us is electric and undeniable. He wants to give me a taste of what he has to offer, and better yet, he vows to be discreet. I'm too selfish to refuse.

But my secret is still a heavy burden, leaving me handcuffed to expectations and unable to fully grasp what I want--him. History has a way of repeating itself, but this time around, with Dante, it'll hurt a lot worse.

I have to decide if I'm going to let love slip away again or if I'm going to finally fight for it.

My Thoughts:

Jaxson is frustrated with having to hide his true self.  I’m sure there are plenty of people who are in a similar situation.  Dante just wants to be a part of his community – and there are those that make it hard.  There’s a secondary character that I came to like rather quickly and missed him when I didn’t see him for a while.  He gives the reader a little comic relief – and watch out because there’s one character that will have you burst out with a laugh.

This is not one of those books where the author is subtle with how she portrays her main characters.  There’s no mistaking their thoughts and feelings.  It’s not hard to see how some people change due to other people’s prejudices.  But with the right person in your life sometimes you’re willing to change your thinking and that was just one enjoyable thing about this book.

The author got it right when she shows how some Mainer’s feel about New Yorkers.  I used to vacation in that lovely state as well as having relatives that actually call Maine their home.  At some point you might hear how some of the older residents feel about some of the visitors but not having been up there in several years that may have changed.  The one negative, for me, was the constant reminder about where they’re from.  You tell me once, or twice, and I will remember.  But on the positive was seeing people wanting to become part of a community and doing their part in bringing some commerce into the area.

What was sad about this, and what made it seem so realistic, was that some people feel that they have to hide who they truly are due to the censure of others.  But on the flip side, I liked how our author showed the opposite can also happen.  And how people’s attitudes can change – but you can’t change everybody.

Be aware that language is very frank and scenes are written so you know exactly what is going on.  You have to be a person who is comfortable with a relationship between two men.  The scenes are no different than of those between a man and a woman.  I didn’t feel uncomfortable with any part of the story except feeling as if I was watching something very personal develop.  I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen in the next book in the series.
