EXCERPT:
“Would you like to have dinner with me at the restaurant here? I haven’t eaten yet either and would love company.”
While I could stare into those magnificent Caribbean Sea eyes for days on end, that wouldn’t be productive. “Thank you, but I have to go through all my emails from my real job tonight and review a contract for one of my clients.” I sighed, the hours of work ahead of me weighing me down.
“We can turn this dinner into a meeting. You can tell me the issues with the contracts so you don’t have to write a long email tomorrow. And I can tell you what else I’ll need your services for over the next few months. As I’m sure you saw in the file, we paid a large retainer to your father so we’d be well represented in this endeavor.”
His words came with a smile, but it didn’t erase the worry building in my gut over the future legal work he expected the firm to accomplish for him and his company. What would happen when I left in two weeks?
I swallowed my dread. “Okay. I guess you better lay it all out there.”
He took my elbow as we walked up the steps toward the restaurant. His warm hand sent interesting flashes up my arm and to my core—a déjà vu from yesterday and more than a little disturbing that the touch of his hand could wreak such havoc within.
Yet it was so much better than the lump of anxiety those flashes had miraculously disintegrated.
