“Hey, guys,” Adrianne Hogan said testily through Cassius Black’s earpiece. “You two know we’re on a mission, right?” Cassius Black tried to answer. Unfortunately, Morgan King’s mouth was currently locked on his and stopping all attempts from him to communicate with their team. He pressed his hands subtly against Morgan’s chest. “I don’t think they can hear you,” Zach Mooney muttered to Adrianne across their comm line. “Doesn’t this count as harassment?” Bailey Green hazarded. “You mean, is our esteemed leader physically molesting the newest member of our team?” Julia Chen drawled. “All evidence is currently pointing to that, yes.” The soft sigh that echoed through the earpiece could only have originated from Charlie Lloyd. Morgan finally ended the kiss. The slow, sexy smile the Aerial flashed at Cassius made his belly clench with desire. He clamped down firmly on his burgeoning lust and narrowed his eyes at the angel smirking at him. “What are you doing?” “Blending in,” Morgan replied, unrepentant. “I don’t think it’s working,” Bailey said through their earpieces. “A group of witches practically fainted when they just walked past you.” “You guys stand out like sore thumbs,” Adrianne muttered. “We should have had Zach and Julia on the ground instead of you two lovesick fools.” Cassius swallowed a sigh. Adrianne wasn’t exactly wrong. The hustle and bustle of the magic market under Chinatown rose around Cassius and Morgan where they stood under a bookshop awning. They were currently on the tail of an alchemist reputed to be selling second-rate Glitterfang to the community of magic users in San Francisco. The cocktail of rat poison and bleach-infused magic powder he’d been peddling had already landed scores of people in hospital. Though Hexa was gunning for the man’s head, it was up to Argonaut as the agency responsible for law and order in the supernatural and magic communities to track down and arrest the criminal. Their source had told them the alchemist would be making an appearance at the market today, although the wizard hadn’t been certain of the exact location of the makeshift booth their target would erect. Cassius, Morgan, and their team had been there for two hours already and had yet to spot him. The physical description of the alchemist varied between his victims’ accounts, making it clear he was using an illusion spell to mask his true identity. Cassius’s ability to accurately detect the scent of a person’s soul core meant they would be able to narrow down their options quickly once he made an appearance. Cassius and Morgan joined the throng of people navigating the alleys, the glow of flame torches casting their shadows on the ground. Though it was still daytime, the underground market saw no natural light and was permanently bathed in a soft, orange twilight. Cassius knew the place would get even busier once the sun set. It was fortunate the alchemist hadn’t chosen to come there at nighttime, when his scent would have been harder to filter out among the host of others that would have clouded the air. A hint of something familiar drifted past Cassius’s nostrils as they turned onto a narrow path in the eastern district a short while later. The San Francisco underground magic market was the biggest emporium of its kind on the west coast and spanned three city blocks. It was divided into five districts: north, south, east, west, and central. The central district was where the most expensive shops were located. It regularly attracted magic users from nearby cities, the variety of rare goods drawing them in despite the hefty price tags. Cassius bumped into a witch, mumbled an apology, and carried on walking. “You got something?” Morgan said lightly. “Yes.” “Get ready to mobilize,” Morgan warned the rest of their team.
