The silence was deafening, a screaming buzz in her oversensitive ears. Mom’s hand squeezed tighter.
Another loud thump sounded outside, this time on the ground. Her legs shook, refusing to move. Mom crept forward and yanked Hailee to follow.
In the dining room, she exhaled silent relief that she left on the small kitchen light. If not, she would’ve slammed right into the table.
The knob on the back door jiggled.
Mom spun to her. The look in her wide eyes sent an icy chill all the way down Hailee’s spine.
“It’s too late,” Mom whispered.
