My Thoughts:
Emily Rampling’s not sure what’s going on. I found that I was feeling the same way when trying to figure out who Xander Rothschild is and where this story was going. This is why I think it took me so long to read. It took me a while to figure out what our author’s vision for her characters was or did I really figure anything out.
On the plus side it’s what kept me reading because I have to figure out this puzzle our author has created. Xander is a man that you don’t know what to believe. James Ballad is a man who attracts attention. His beginning conversations with Xander upped my curiosity and that’s the point where the fog seemed to lift and the story started to click for me. This is a reminder that you have to give a book a chance. He seems to manipulate things and had me wondering if he was trying to manipulate us as well.
I’ve read or listened to a few of the books Ms. Fewings has written and this is the first book where it took me a little while to warm up to the characters. With James, I don’t know that “warm up to” is how I would describe my feelings. But if not for him, I have to wonder if my confusion would have continued throughout the whole story. I think this is one reason that a duet was needed. Like a flower, things take time to grow and reveal themselves. The ending was a great way to get us ready for book two. I’m interested to see what will get revealed there.
