Excerpt:

He sat like a shadow, so dark with his midnight hair and dark clothing. The scar running the length of one side of his face added to his aura of danger. Even so grave and defensive, he was attractive with his more-rugged-than-strictly-patrician features and alert, silvery eyes. When he smiled—if he ever smiled—he would probably be stunning.

She glanced back at the doorway. He had arrived. With hair as dark as a starless night, a tall figure clad almost entirely in black strode toward them. Something shifted inside her and she took a step back from his presence of power. As he neared, his air of deadliness swept ahead of him like a giant clearing the path. Piercing gray eyes set in his fearsomely handsome face caught and held her gaze as he drew nearer.
She chided herself. Grant Amesbury had protected her. Why everything about him seemed so deadly tonight, she couldn’t explain, but she surely had nothing to fear from him. Firmly wearing the role of hostess, she moved to welcome him. He was dressed in beautifully tailored clothing, as fashionable as the clothes he’d worn the night he’d brought home Jonathan. His new haircut and style gave him Town polish.
“Welcome, Mr. Amesbury.” She sank into a curtsy.
He inclined his head. “You look lovely.” The words fell awkwardly from his lips as if he’d rehearsed them. She doubted he often paid compliments to anyone.
“How kind of you to say.”
He paused and focused on her. Something changed in his expression. He studied her in a way that sent heat from her face clear down to her toes. Oh heavens, if these were the kind of looks he was capable of giving, he clearly was dangerous to ladies, but not in the way she’d thought.
Her attention zeroed in on his lips, and hers tingled in response. Powerless under his stare, she wrenched her gaze from his and nervously touched her brooch as if to assure herself it remained in place, anything to restore her good sense, which had quite literally failed her for a moment.

“How can I thank you properly?” Jocelyn said.
Mr. Amesbury blinked as if unaccustomed to such an outpouring of gratitude. “No need. Their safety is enough. I enjoy administering a bit of justice now and again.”
The corner of his mouth twitched and an unholy gleam shimmered in the hardness of his eyes. For a fleeting moment, a vision of Grant Amesbury hunting down the criminal who’d attacked her and exacting some form of vengeance upon him flashed through her mind. He was like a rogue knight with his own code of honor and his own methods of justice.
Jocelyn studied Mr. Amesbury’s profile, fascinated with his cautious probing. He was so solemn, so intense. If only he’d smile. But no, perhaps it was best he didn’t. He’d probably be so handsome she would be rendered unable to utter an intelligent word.
When the butler opened the door to announce dinner, she said quietly, “I hope you don’t mind, Mr. Amesbury, but I’ve seated you next to me.”
He blinked as if he’d forgotten she stood next to him. “Why would I mind?”
She huffed out a self-deprecating laugh. “You seemed a bit ill at ease yesterday when you came for tea.”
His pale gray eyes passed over her. Again came that intensity. His hard edges softened. “Not because I object to your company, Miss Fairley.”
It was ridiculous, really, the warmth that wrapped around her like a blanket at his words. She probably grinned like some kind of silly schoolgirl. His crusty, protective barrier returned in his posture and his expression. How long would it take her to break open his emotional armor and find the real Grant Amesbury?

Excerpt

The sound of churning gravel and the purr of a car engine drew Sky’s attention to the road. A silver Jag slowed to a stop in front of Gran’s. His heart clutched in his chest, air stilled in his lungs.
Katie.
He didn’t need to see the shimmer of her glossy auburn hair reflecting in the setting sun to recognize her. The blistering pull of every cell in his body and the rush of conflicting emotions rolling through him were proof enough. Anger, desire, sadness, and rejection brought with them a sting that burned the backs of his eyes. Forcing down the lump of emotion clogging his throat, Sky tried to tamp down the familiar vibration humming through his body. A part of him wanted to whoop for joy before yanking Katie into his arms kissing her senseless. Another part of him wanted to forget she even existed…wipe away the ball-churning memories that flooded his brain, and focus on the hurt and anger he felt when Gran broke the news, Katie had left. Yet, all he could think about was touching her, kissing her, holding her in his arms, before he dragged her beneath him.
Skimming a cursory glance over the ridiculously expensive sports car, Sky’s shoulders sagged. Katie had achieved her dreams all right, it was staring him in the face, sending feelings of inadequacy deep into his bones. He hadn’t had a damn thing to offer her at eighteen; he sure as hell didn’t now. Sky couldn’t compete with the riches she’d apparently become accustomed to. It didn’t take a genius to see he could only rate as a long lost lover. Reality stung, like a slap to the face.
Katie had ripped his heart out and stomped it to shit—a fact he’d do well to remember. But it didn’t erase the desire to love her again, or the growing need inside his jeans. Disgusted by his traitorous libido, her return only served to make him pick at the scabs of the past, and douse them in salt water. Sky clenched his jaw.
“Looks like you got everything you wanted, Katie,” he mumbled with disdain. “I’m sure you’re happy now.”
No sooner had the words rolled off his tongue than the sounds of gut-wrenching sobs filled his ears.
What the hell?
Tossing down the shovel, Sky mopped the sweat off his face before storming toward the Jag. Katie’s sobs grew louder and more pitiful. Like fine crystal, the flimsy barrier he’d erected around his heart, began to crack, splinter, and finally shatter. Standing next to the open window, Sky watched tears drip from beneath her shroud of silky, red hair. The waning sun reflected in each drop, casting them in a shimmer of gold, as they spilled onto Katie’s lap.
His guts and heart clenched in tandem. Sky had only seen Katie cry once: the first time they made love; those had been tears of joy. There wasn’t an ounce of happiness in the guttural sobs ringing in his ears. What the hell had happened to her? This wasn’t the strong, resilient woman he’d once loved. Seeing Katie in the throes of such brutal sorrow gutted him.
In an instant, his heart caught fire with the need to protect: burning away the poisonous animosity he’d felt moments ago. Instantly, flames of love reignited—the powerful kind they’d once shared—and Sky only wanted to scoop her into his arms so he could comfort and slay the demons causing her this pain.

RBTL Presents: Forbidden Rain by L.L. Crane; #BlogTour, #Excerpt, & #Giveaway

Title: Forbidden Rain
Author: L.L. Crane
Series: Blue Spectrum Chronicles (Book 1)
Genre: Young Adult Dystopian Fiction
Publisher: Self Published
Release Date: July 16 2015
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Rating:  4 Stars
Told in the first person.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from RBTL World of Books Blog Tours and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

Blurb/Synopsis:

Rain is forbidden.  As a matter of fact, any teen romance is quickly snuffed out by the Administration due to the high S.L.A.G. (symptomatic latent autistic gene) rate.   But that isn’t going to slow Orion down.  He wants Rain, and one way or another, he’s going to get her.  The problem?  She isn’t interested in the hunky new boy who struts into her Geography class right after an earthquake strikes Province A. New students are rare in the Provinces, and much to Rain’s dismay she must show him around for three long days.
But there’s much more to Orion than what meets the eye.  The cocky boy has secrets, not only about his family but about Rain’s as well.  When a romance finally develops, Rain and Orion must find a covert hiding place so the Administration’s prying eyes won’t find them.  But will it work?  The hedge gap seems the perfect place, until Orion mysteriously disappears, leaving only one cryptic clue.  The letter K.  Heartbroken, Rain feels the loss of Orion viscerally and is determined to find him.  Eventually, after giving up on Orion, Rain settles into a normal routine with her new family, trying to forget about him.
But Rain soon discovers that she has the biggest secret of all, and if the Administration finds out, there is more at stake than just a teen romance.  Left on her own, Rain must face the biggest decision of her life.  There are only two paths to follow.  Which one will she take?
Book 1 in the Blue Spectrum Chronicles will keep you tethered to your seat, waiting to turn each page to see what happens when a young couple bravely dares to fall in love at a time when it is strictly forbidden.

My Thoughts:

The story starts with showing the reader the type of childhood Rain has.  It also shows what type of life our children’s children may have in the future.  Besides going to school, Rain works at a clinic that makes me sad.  But it’s steeped with what may be our future reality.  Orion is a young man that’s going to push her buttons.  She needs something to wake her up and get her out of her comfort zone.

This is a book that may be listed as a young adult book but it’s one that anyone will enjoy.  The author has a way of getting the reader involved with the story.  If you’re a fan of science fiction then this is a book you may not want to miss.  Maybe you like a little romance with that and the author shows how this society finds love to be forbidden.  You will be caught up in how our young couple comes to grip with that.  Are you a rebellious person?  Why not see if these two are going to question what is going on around them or are they going to learn to conform as others do.

It’s a story that will have you wanting more.  Good thing that this is just the beginning of what’s going to be an interesting series.  You’ve got to love a character that wants to fight what the system dictates.  This book will leave you hanging because it gets you ready to read Vanishing Rain.  Good thing the book is out now so you don’t have to wait and can read from one book to the next.  Then the only thing you might have to wait for is the third book to come out.

Excerpt:

Orion nodded his head up and down, his eyes gazing off into the darkness of the hedge, uncrossing his long legs and stretching them out in front of his body. “I know you might not believe me, especially after yesterday.”   He was quiet again, his jaw clenching firmly, the muscles in it popping out like inverted rivers.  I wanted to take invisible fingers and massage them back to normal.  To take those same invisible fingers and with a click, make all of this disappear.
But there were no invisible fingers, and my stomach roiled into knots.

Cupcakes and Characters:
(Choose 3 of your Characters and tell us what their favorite cupcake is and why)

Rain:  She would have to have a gigantic white cupcake with raspberry swirled frosting and sprinkles of every sort on top.  Rain rarely gets a treat because her weight slips up above mandated guidelines too often.  She has had to go without so many delicacies because of this, eating such things as organic chicken and gluten free noodles with broccoli, that she craves anything sweet...and it isn’t always cupcakes!

Orion:  Orion would have to have deep blue frosting on top of a chocolate cupcake.  The blue represents his heart-stopping blue eyes and the constellation he was named for as well as the blue sky that Rain always looks up to, searching for him.  The chocolate is because in his own way, Orion is the most down to earth of all characters in the book, even though most of the time, he appears to be a wild card and very dangerous!

Dove:  Dove would need a red velvet cupcake with red hearts dabbled on top of white frosting because she is filled with so much love.  She is strong yet loving and is such an important part of Rain’s life that the red would also stand for the power she has helped Rain attain throughout the book.
