‘Your brass is ballsy, Kage Sable.’ – Harlow Meridien.

Running from her past, Harlow lives for the present. She’s sassy-smart-strong. A genius, generous, confident scientist developing a groundbreaking propulsion technology that’s attracted the attention of The Sable Group, and Kage Sable, to be exact.

He’s a master builder, an ex-warrior, a kick-ass engineer with sexy nerd energy and her new ‘boss’. His shop is responsible for an enviable fleet of high-tech corvettes, luxury flyers and racing pinnaces – helping to cement the Sable Riders’ dominance across Pegasi.

Convinced she’s the woman for him, Kage is determined to make Harlow his. He strongly believes every superwoman needs a superman. Problem is, she’s not so sure. She’s got a bad history with men. All she wants to do is focus on her work that could shift the balance of power in the Pegasi System.

She’s wary of Kage’s moxie and full-on thrust at life and love and doesn’t think she’s ready for that much intensity yet. But he slowly draws her in, one delicious moment at a time.

From subterranean speakeasies, sunken casinos and ancient ruins to fighting dens and exquisite eateries, Kage takes Harlow on dizzying flights of pure bliss across Eden II to convince her he’s light years from the ‘lame, always running game’ losers of her past. Instead, he’s a real man with strong convictions and the best intentions, who believes in an impossible love.

Together, they’ll fight for the relationship they want while keeping their top-secret breakthrough from a swarm of greedy, ruthless galactic hustlers. Together, they’ll fall into a twilight dusk of heady love and impossible starlight.

Excerpt:

You know Shadow, Kage or whatever they call you -,’ she started.

‘Feels like I’m about to get a beating,’ he drawled. ‘Out with it, Harlow.’

‘Fine. I’m still pissed off that you didn’t announce yourself earlier. I find it rude that you were hanging around while I was on my date.’

‘Excuse my efforts in keeping you safe from unknown threats,’ Kage rumbled with a glimmer in his eye. ‘Why so peeved? Was he your boyfriend?’

She narrowed her eyes at him, neither denying nor confirming his speculation.

‘You don’t need a boyfriend,’ he drawled on, unconcerned. ‘Specially one who’s such a controlling toxic asshole. What you need is a man. Who’s secure enough to appreciate your beauty as it is and let you eat in peace.’

Harlow’s head swivelled, and she nailed him with a long, unsettling look. ‘Is that right?’

‘Tis, and you know it,’ the man muttered smartly.

Harlow stopped what she was doing and pointed her finger at Kage. ‘Yet another man telling me who I should be and how I should think.’

‘Cept he was wrong, and I’m right.’

Suddenly Harlow felt the same emotion that had consumed her at the restaurant wash over her again. She was unable to stop the rush of words out of her mouth. ‘Why do you men always claim to be arrogantly right? That’s why I’m done with you all.’

Kage paused mid-beer pull. He cocked an eyebrow in disbelief. ‘All men?’

‘All! I made myself a promise tonight, no men for a very long time.’

‘How long?’ he taunted, his eyes narrowing.

‘As long as it bloody takes. Forever if necessary.’

He gave her a speculative look. ‘You won’t last long,’ he drawled.

‘And how would you know?’

‘Because you’re one hella beautiful woman. You deserve the best loving.’

‘There you go. Judging me and my happiness by my looks.’

‘I wouldn’t dare.’

‘You just did, though. You said I’m -,’ Harlow paused, suddenly nonplussed as she realised the full force of his unexpected compliment. ‘- Beautiful.’

‘That’s coz you are. And smart from the looks of things.’ He settled deeper into the couch, a smirk playing on his lips.

THE BABEL APOCALYPSE
by Vyvyan Evans
GENRE: Science Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Language is no longer learned, but streamed to neural implants regulated by lang-laws. Those who can't afford language streaming services are feral, living on the fringes of society. Big tech corporations control language, the world’s most valuable commodity.
But when a massive cyberattack causes a global language outage, catastrophe looms.
Europol detective Emyr Morgan is assigned to the case. His prime suspect is Professor Ebba Black, the last native speaker of language in the automated world, and leader of the Babel cyberterrorist organization. But Emyr soon learns that in a world of corporate power, where those who control language control everything, all is not as it seems.
As he and Ebba collide, Emyr faces an existential dilemma between loyalty and betrayal, when everything he once believed in is called into question. To prevent the imminent collapse of civilization and a global war between the great federations, he must figure out friend from foe—his life depends on it. And with the odds stacked against him, he must find a way to stop the Babel Apocalypse.
The Babel Apocalypse earned a starred review in Kirkus: "A perfect fusion of SF, thriller, and mystery—smart speculative fiction at its very best."
EXCERPT:
Ebba was all too aware that she was viewed as an anomaly by pretty much everyone; she was neither feral nor out-soc. So, some of her students—especially those from outside the Republic, such as the Grand Union, and other places too—thought she must be breaking the law. It was a common misconception. She had even once been reported to the authorities by one of those types. For being an unchipped ghost, as they called her. That made her laugh; a dark laugh at the irony of it. The mutes, she called them. Those who had been fitted with Universal Grammar tech.
But while she officially resided in the Nordic Republic, and as long as she remained there, Ebba wasn’t doing anything illegal. The Republic was something of a curiosity even among Tier One states, never having passed a lang-law. Yet this singular absence was offset by the special requirements of Nordic birth licenses. To have one granted, prospective parents had to consent to their newborn being fitted with Universal Grammar tech. So everyone got a language chip at birth anyway, together with an ear implant transceiver. Which meant that voice command tech was, for all intents and purposes, de rigueur even without a lang-law. But that was the Scandinavian way. In the Nordic Republic, they organized freedom.
For her part, Ebba knew it wasn’t her. It was everyone else who had the problem. “That’s what you would think,” her braver, typically male students told her. “You’re Ebba Black.” Ha! Whatever that means. How do they know what Ebba Black would think anyway?
Does your profession make it easier, or harder, when you're developing a book?
My background is in linguistics and cognitive science—I have a PhD in linguists and have spent a career working as a university professor of linguistics.
I think that whatever the genre of writing, there are specific challenges, as well as some broad similarities. I have written and published technical books on language and mind, works of reference such as glossaries and textbooks, as well popular science books. Each of these genres requires a different style of presentation. But the commonality is that the writing style is expository: the message is key, and that must be explained clearly in an audience-specific way, whether writing for students, interested lay-readers of language and science, or seasoned academic experts.
In terms of writing genre fiction (such as science fiction), the key difference is that the message emerges through the story. Hence, the exposition (of a more academic style) takes a backseat. In genre fiction, as the messages derive from (and through) the story, which is the central driver of fiction, the aphorism ‘show, don’t tell’ becomes key.
I find science fiction to be appealing as a genre, as it really is an advantage to be a subject matter expert. To write convincingly, especially in so-called ‘hard’ science fiction, such as The Babel Apocalypse, which strives for scientific accuracy, it is important to have relevant background in the story and the ideas being conveyed. And it seems to me that this cannot be adequately replicated without some meaningful level of expertise.
Isaac Asimov, for instance, one of the genre’s early pioneers, was a Professor of Biochemistry at Boston University, also possessing a background in physics and mathematics. In short, it’s important to write what you know. And from that perspective, it was a relatively easy step to move from writing about language for a technical audience to writing about the future of language for a speculative fiction audience.
Excerpt:
The afternoon sun was high in the sky as I exited through the main doors of Shinjuku High. Though it was well into fall now, the sun beamed down with a determined intensity, baking my skin with its dry heat. There was not a cloud anywhere to be found across the pale blue expanse and the harsh light gave no indication of dimming any time soon. I closed my eyes against the glare, but that only served to fill my vision with the red of light through my eyelids and I’d had enough of that colour for one day.
Shaking my head, I shrugged my way out of my unnecessary jacket and quickened my pace toward my mother’s silver Toyota. Up ahead, I caught sight of my friend Yue boarding her father’s bus after greeting him with an exuberant hug.
I smiled slightly, watching them. I would never admit it aloud, but I had always felt a little envious of the easy relationship Yue had with her parents. My family life had never been so simple, my father being a busy military lawyer and my mother made bitter by the fact that Father never seemed to have any time to spend with her. Unfortunately, that bitterness often spilled over onto me.
Mother smiled and waved as she caught sight of me. I froze, shocked – what could have made her so happy? Not wanting to ruin it for her, I quickened my pace further and practically darted to the rear passenger door of the little car, letting myself in and wondering what I could expect.
“Are you in a hurry, dear?”  she asked with a bemused expression.
“No, Mother.”
“Are you comfortable back there, Yukari, or did you want to move up here and sit with me?”
This was…different.
“I know you usually sit back there,” she admitted, “but I realized we hardly ever talk, you and I, and I thought it might be good if we got to know each other a little better.”
“All right, Mother,” I answered tentatively and joined her in the front, leaving my school things behind.
“That’s better, isn’t it?”
I nodded but said nothing, worried my voice might betray how awkward I felt. It wasn’t usual for my mother to treat me like an equal and I wondered what this could possibly be about. As she started up the car and pulled out onto the street I found myself studying her out of the corner of my eye.
“So,” she said as she met my gaze with a sidelong one of her own, “any cute boys I should know about?”
“Mother!”
“What?” She grinned impishly. “It’s just your father and I always sort of hoped that you would bring someone home to meet us, but you never did…not even any friends, except occasionally Hotaru.”
“I don’t like any boys, Mother,” I answered, but as I spoke the words I knew in my heart they weren’t true – there was someone…
“What about that boy…what was his name?” Mother continued, incorrigibly. “He was kind of cute. A little rougher around the edges than I would have expected…oh, what am I saying? I’m sure whomever you choose will be perfect.”
My mind whirled, trying to understand what could have caused this change in my mother and what could have gotten her on the current subject, but along with my swirling thoughts came the red haze, blurring everything until I had no hope of unraveling it.
