Seasoned fireman, Dave Metcalf, has a sea of regrets. The biggest was pushing his now ex-wife away while recovering from a bad fire. With her illness, his son comes to live with him again, giving him a new perspective.

Watching a comrade go down pushes Metcalf to help in the investigation.

The spark never died between Marissa and Metcalf. They’ll have to work together to find the culprit and end the wave of destruction sweeping Lakeridge.

My Thoughts:

Dave Metcalf is one of our unsung heroes – he puts his life on the line in order to help others.  He’s a divorced father who has eyes for one woman.  And he has the ex from hell.  Marissa Cortez is looking to have a second chance at love.  She also has a mystery to solve.  This story starts off with us feeling sorry for Metcalf – this is a great way to grab the reader’s attention.  Marissa just seems to be at the right place at the right time.  On top of the mystery and romance, our author puts in a little something that will pull at your heart.  You’ll get a sense of some real emotion especially when Marissa meets Ashton for the first time.  He will have you wanting to give him a hug.  What I loved about Marissa’s family is that her brothers can be royal pains and overprotective - they just want her to be happy.

Once you start this story, you will find it difficult to put down.  I’m not one for solving mysteries so I have to keep reading.  The connection that you see develop between our two main characters is just icing on the cake.  Another reason I had to keep reading were the concerns that Dave had about Marissa. Once you see those concerns, you want to find out if they are valid or if things work out.  Then there’s Ashton – you want to know that his world will be filled with love and happiness.

This being the first in a series and after reading this first book, I’m going to have some high expectations for book two.  Especially at the surprise the author puts into the Epilogue – you’ll be smiling.  For this being my first book that I’ve read by Ms. Rivers, I’m most impressed and looking forward to reading more.  I hope that if you take the time to read this book you will be impressed too.
