— SYNOPSIS —

Love is always worth the risk . . .

Neil Healy was happy to be promoted to Air Force Lieutenant, but he's less than thrilled that the new job has brought him back to his hometown. The memories alone could kill a man, to say nothing of actually seeing the woman he never got over. All Becky wants this holiday season is to get through the month of December with her sanity intact. Not helping? Her ex-boyfriend's return to Glenwood Falls. — EXCERPT —

“Need some help?”

The unexpected sound of a deep male voice made Becky jump and lose her balance once again on the wet floor. Two hands gripped her shoulders to steady her and she immediately wished he’d have let her fall. Feeling her cheeks on fire, she turned to face Neil.

His profile picture did not fully capture the hotness standing in front of her. Time had been far too good to him. The young, boyish face had been replaced by a rugged handsomeness that would turn more than one head in the small town, and she immediately felt a pang of irrational jealousy. His solid, square jaw with just the right amount of stubble had always been her weakness, and his dark brown eyes held a look of uncertainty mixed with a friendly familiarity as though no time at all had passed since she’d last gazed into them.

Becky folded her arms across her body, putting up a physical barrier to match the internal one that had immediately sprung up around her heart at the unexpected feelings spurred by the sight of her ex. “What are you doing here? How’d you get in?” Small town or not, she never left her door unlocked. After having a police officer for a husband, she’d known not to adopt a false sense of security.

“Your daughter let me in.” He surveyed the mess of the laundry room. “Washing machine problems?” he asked, removing his jacket to reveal a tight, black T-shirt haphazardly tucked into one side of a hip-hugging pair of denim.

“Oh no…it’s no…” She clamped her lips together. She couldn’t even remember the question. What was it about his big, muscular arms that turned her brain to complete mush?

Maybe the fact that she still remembered what it felt like to be wrapped up in them?

“Let me look,” Neil said, moving her away by her shoulders and stepping carefully into the two inches of water on the floor. It sloshed under his boots and soaked the frayed hem of his faded jeans.

Riding boots. He’d always talked about owning a motorcycle. An adrenaline junkie from an early age, he’d owned his first dirt bike at fourteen and the sight of him on it had done crazy things to her teenage hormones. She remembered sneaking out after curfew to ride on the back of it, holding on tight to him as they sped along the empty dirt roads at night, stopping to make out near the riverbank…“That’s not necessary. I got it under control.”

He ignored her. Opening the lid, he looked inside, then reached into the water, up to his biceps. Sexy, toned, still-tanned-from-the-Miami-sun biceps.

“Really, I’m sure you have places to be. I’ll call someone if it’s something I can’t fix on my own.” Since ending his pursuit of a hockey career, Jackson flipped houses for a living and was quite the handyman. He was her go-to for these kind of things.

“It’s okay. I’m here anyway,” Neil said, not sounding all too pleased about it.

Well neither was she. She certainly hadn’t been expecting a visit from the hottest man to ever leave her weak in the knees. And she definitely would not have invited him in and allowed him to see her messy laundry room. But here he was. Standing in two inches of water, his arm disappearing in her washing machine, looking like a sexy gift from handyman heaven.

And she was wearing Star Wars pajama pants and a holiday-themed sweatshirt featuring Grumpy Cat that said dashing through the snow…get the f*ck out of my way.

Not exactly the way one fantasizes about running into an ex.

She was going to have to have the “don’t open the door to strangers” talk with Taylor again.

“I think I found the problem,” he said, pulling a thin piece of black, lacy fabric from the machine. “These were wrapped around the agitator.” He opened the thong, stretching the thin waistband between his hands. “Nice.”

Her mortification obviously knew no bounds. She yanked them out of his hands and tucked the wet fabric under her arm. She’d worn them under duress earlier that week when she’d had nothing else clean. They were horrible. The lace, the string between her ass cheeks…She shuddered at the memory of how they’d ridden up past her jeans when she’d bent over at the grocery store to pick up an apple that had rolled off the fruit display table, and she’d caught the fifteen-year-old stock boy, Al, staring.

She should have burned them instead of washing them because she would never wear them again. “Thank you for discovering the problem,” she said through clenched teeth. “Even though I said I had it under control.”

He ignored her comment. “Why don’t you plug it back in and see if that fixes things?”

Well, another thong wouldn’t be caught in there, if that’s what he was hoping. A memory of the lingerie she used to wear for him flashed in her mind—matching bra and panty sets, one-piece teddies…The look in his eyes seeing her in those things had made her feel like the sexiest woman in the world. And the way he’d slowly remove the garments from her body had sparked a passion, an intensity, an undeniable need…

Her eyes met his now and she could see her own thoughts reflected in his expression. He glanced away quickly, but it was too late—she knew that look well. She wasn’t the only one struggling with the past.

She plugged in the machine and it hummed as it resumed its cycle as though nothing had happened. As if the ground beneath her feet hadn’t just trembled.

“Great,” Neil said. “Just FYI—You’re supposed to put those things in a garment washing bag.”

“Suddenly a connoisseur of women’s delicates?” Damn, that sounded jealous even to her ears.

“Twelve years is enough time for anyone to change.”

Was it? Then why did things feel so much the same when she looked at him? Too much time had passed, too much life had happened for both of them—she couldn’t claim to know the man he was now. Yet, her heart insisted it did.

Before she could say anything, his hands were on her face. Her eyes widened at the feel of the rough palms against her skin. She opened her mouth to speak, but his lips pressed against hers before she could process what was happening.

What was he doing? What was she doing? That was the better question as her arms circled his neck. And how did the sensation of his mouth on hers feel so damn familiar after all these years?

— SHORT EXCERPT —

"You cared, and you challenged me. You pushed me to want more for myself. You gave me a reason to fight for my life. And, that’s when I felt it—hope. I felt it instantly—the minute you walked in, and it scared the sh*t out of me."

— ABOUT THE AUTHOR —

Hello! I’m Kate Squires, and I write contemporary romance novels. Want to know a little bit more about me? Well, then keep reading!

Northeast Ohio, is where my life began and continues. I’m the only girl in my family of four older brothers, who lightheartedly tortured me as a child. My father was an avid reader, and was somehow able to watch TV, and read books simultaneously, without missing a beat. My mom loved to read as well, and was basically June Cleaver. Not that I am old enough to know who that is.

I met my husband, though I was sure he wasn’t the one for me. Through his ability to make me laugh in any situation, I found that my original assumptions were incorrect, and we married three years later. His romantic side is often the inspiration for some of the parts in my books. Together with our four crazy children, we fight and make up, which incidentally, is how some of my best fight scenes are written!

Aside from writing, I’ve held other steady jobs. They range from Dog Groomer, to Home Health Aide, Housekeeper to Dance Teacher. I’ve also been a foster parent to countless children, and a host mom to several foreign exchange students. So, when do I find time to write? In between bringing home the bacon and frying it up in a pan, of course!

I’ve published a series of contemporary romance novels. That Kiss, and its sequel, That Promise, I Will Catch You, and Tracing Hearts. That Kiss, That Promise, and I Will Catch You, are all available in paperback on Amazon, and for your e-reader at Amazon.com and Smashwords.com. Tracing Hearts is available on Amazon and Kindle Unlimited!

If you have any questions or just want to send me a message, please do! I love getting reader mail, and strive to answer every message. Don’t worry, I won’t bite.

Thanks for visiting. Come back soon!

— EXCERPT

“Hey, Nic, when you gonna give a guy a chance?” A deep chuckle followed Jimmy’s attempt at snagging that date he’d been working on for months.

I didn’t even take the time to turn and acknowledge him. The man pulled the same shit every Friday and Saturday night. He was at least five years older than me and had a beer gut the size of a pregnant woman’s in her last trimester. He was harmless, but he loved to fire me up. Guys like him were one of the things that came with working in a small-town bar and grill. Lucy’s was the place to be, and all the hopeless men seemed to flock to it, hoping to get lucky.

“Come on, sweetheart, just a chance is all I’m asking.” I heard a few more chuckles from the men he was sitting with. They too had heard this song and dance, time and time again.

“I’ve given two chances to two different men in my life, and both times I got screwed over. Ain’t gonna happen again, Jimmy.” I continued to clean off tables as the night came closer to an end.

Most people in town knew the details of my story. They knew the heartache I felt when Ryker left and never returned. They watched as I moped around town, missing him with everything inside me. They watched as I slowly began to self-destruct and fall to pieces.

I should have been smart enough to realize when Tyler Murphy started hanging around me that he had an ulterior motive. But I was young and vulnerable, and he saw right through it. He was able to catch me at my weakest, and nine months later I had a sweet little baby girl to show for that one night of drinking. Now, I wouldn’t change the fact I was a mother to a darling three year-old angel, but I sure would change who her daddy was.

Tyler has only seen his daughter a handful of times in her short life, and he had made every one of those times all about him. He was a worthless piece of shit, and most days I thanked God he kept his distance. I didn’t want Tori to be influenced by her father. He was too drunk to see straight practically every day of the week, and I didn’t want my baby girl to have that type of disappointment in her life.

“Lay off, Jimmy.” Speaking of Tyler, I closed my eyes tightly as his voice grew louder and closer. The moment his hand touched my hip, I spun around and shoved the half-empty beer bottle I’d been holding in his face.

“Touch me again and you’ll be picking glass shards out of your head for weeks.”

Tyler narrowed his eyes and smirked. “Still feisty as hell.” He backed up and held his hands out in surrender. “You know how much that turns me on, babe.”

“I also know we could put a dress on a pig and you’d still sport wood,” I fired back and walked off toward the bar to empty my arms. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with Tyler’s shit. “I think you need to spend less time worrying about getting laid and more time providing for Tori. You know, your daughter.”

“Come on, Nicole, don’t be like that.” He gave me his best charming smile while taking a seat on the barstool on the other side of the bar. “I’ll give you some money next week.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ve been hearing that same shit from you every month. When do you plan on following through? A child is not an occasional responsibility, it’s an every-damn-day and-night obligation. When are you ever gonna grow the hell up?” I could feel my ears getting hotter with every word I spoke. “You are twenty-five years old, and I swear to God, most twelve year-olds have more sense than you do.” I slammed the bottles into the garbage can and fought to control my anger.

“You didn’t think I was that bad the night you crawled in bed with me.” This was Tyler’s game. He was always throwing our one night of nothing special in my face.

“That’s not the way I remember it at all. I remember being upset and you continued mixing drinks for me. It’s sure is funny that after about the third one, I remember nothing until I woke up the next morning and looked over to find you. Hell, I even contemplated gnawing off my own leg for fear of waking you if I moved it from beneath your legs.” His smirk had finally fallen from his face. “All I wanted to do was wash that mistake from my memory. Forget I ever believed you actually wanted to be a friend. The only good that ever came of that night was Victoria, and I wish more than anything your sorry ass wasn’t her father. Because that little angel deserves more than what you could ever give her.”

Tyler pushed up from the barstool, and it fell to the ground behind him. The few people that were still lingering around the bar turned to watch as he leaned in, placing his hands on top of the bar. “What do you expect me to be, more like your sweet Ryker?” When Tyler said the name, his nostrils flared with irritation. “Just face it, Nicole, no one will ever be able to be who you want. Everyone that tries will just be competing with him. But you need to remember this.” His cockiness returned, and my heart was racing. The mention of Ryker always got a reaction out of me. “He left you, without looking back. Not so much the perfect man, if you ask me.”

Without thinking I lunged at Tyler and swung my fist, and it connected with his lower lip. A set of strong arms wrapped around me from behind, and I knew it was Greg, the bartender.

“Get out of here, Tyler, before I turn her loose,” he said.

Tyler licked the small amount of blood on his lip before backing away with a smirk. “See you later, Sweet Pea. Give Tori a kiss good night from her daddy.”

I tugged at Greg’s hands, trying to get away, but he only held me tighter. “Slow down, darlin’, that man ain’t worth the time or the energy.”

He was right, I knew that, but it still didn’t tame the need to beat his ass. Tyler Murphy was and would always be a worthless drunk. He played games, and I refused to allow him to play me.

HEA Book Tours PR Presents: The Desert Pleasures Series by Zoe Blackwood

THE DESERT PLEASURES SERIES by Zoe Blackwood
Genre: EROTIC ROMANCE
Ratings:    4.5 Stars
Told in the first person.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from HEA Book Tours and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

HOLLYWOOD GIANT
LOSING GRIP
LOSING HER
BROKEN MOON

**They can be enjoyed in any order and are intended for a mature audience.**

- SERIES BLURB -

Alicia Porter owns an exclusive and discreet male escort service for women called, Desert Pleasures.

The clientele is unique, hand selected by Alicia herself, so her escorts are also not the standard for the industry, but rather something deliciously sinful.

The first four books in the series are introductions to the escorts, as well as the clientele (Losing Grip). Since these books feature different characters, they can be read in any order. Several books have character crossovers.

My Thoughts:

This is one of those series that if you had to sum it up in one word it might be “wow” or even “hot” – I know, how about “steamy”.  I guess I just can’t sum it up in just one word.  But there is one word you won’t see here and that is “boring”.  One thing each of these books has in common is that they can be read as standalones but why would you.  If you enjoy one, you’ll enjoy them all.  The only choice you’ll have to make is in which order you will read them.  I didn’t feel as if there was anything that connected these stories together enough that it’s required to read them in order.

This series lets you look into the lives of some male escorts and the women that come into their lives. It makes you think about the double standard of men and women in that particular profession.  It also has you thinking about how can men come to love one woman while they are practicing that particular lifestyle.  In that respect, women have it easier.  We also see how it might be hard when dealing with other family members.

One thing that I found was that when I was waiting for a medical appointment, I was constantly looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was reading along with me.   Was also surprised that they didn’t ask why I looked flushed.  Can you imagine if you had a chance to watch it on the TV?  I think my television would short out.  Looking forward to seeing what this author has in store for her readers next.
