Blurb:

A life created from ash and blood by powers unbeknownst to mankind.

A person to rid the world of those destined to destroy it.

The more Magdalene Leech recalls of her former life, the more certain she is that ignorance was indeed bliss.

Memories come flooding back, bringing to light abuses she’s suffered, lies she’s been told, and secrets she’s buried deep. After fleeing her captors, she settles into a life of peace and normalcy, forging a path all her own.

Then, a fateful encounter with an old woman in possession of an odd pendant changes everything.

Thrust into a past she’s struggling to recognize, Magdalene comes face-to-face with the demon she gave her heart to centuries ago. Now, she’s in a race against time to restore a power that’s rightfully hers … before she becomes a victim to it.

I’ve always loved to write ever since I was young. I would picture myself as the main character so I could go on adventures. They began as daydreams, which I eventually put down onto paper. Throughout the years I would write whenever I got the chance no matter how small the manuscript turned out to be. I’d tried the traditional method of sending out query letters to agents, but they would respond with a “thanks, but no thanks” note. I felt discouraged, but kept writing. I had a lot of encouragement from my mom, my Aunt Jeanne, my daughter, and my husband. Having the support helped keep me chasing my dream. A few years ago, I decided to buckle down and get serious about my writing. After some research and speaking with a friend of my husband, I took the plunge into self-publishing. I found an editor and a cover designer along with other indie authors on Facebook. I’ve joined groups and asked advice from writers who have already been through the steps it takes to get out there. It took me four years and three versions before I published my first book titled Wasteland. From there, I’ve completed several series and stand-alones with quite a few more in progress, so watch for their release.

When I got back to my shabby little 9th Avenue office, no one was there. My partner, Eyre, was gone from his desk. It was just ten in the morning, but we were supposed to go out to dinner tonight, and then afterwards he'd be sleeping over at my place. I squeezed my eyes shut for a second, hoping he'd somehow be there when I opened them. But no. Ever since I'd met him, I'd worried he might just disappear when he'd had enough of me. Maybe today was the day.

His desk looked normal enough. Laptop, closed. A half-empty can of Diet Pepsi. An orchid spray in a vase because after six months working with me he was still charmed at the idea of being like Nero Wolfe and having an office on 35th Street. An upturned paperback: Max Gladstone's Full Fathom Five. I'd bought it for Eyre as a joke because of the title - he used to go by Ariel, long ago and the title was out of The Tempest - but I guess he must have liked it because he was almost done with the book. It looked like he'd stepped out, except Eyre's pistol was still clamped under the desk, and his phone was charging. He hated carrying the gun, and I often had to bully him into it, but he wouldn't have left without his phone, not even to go to the bathroom. Something was seriously wrong.

Just then, my own phone rang, playing the Peter Gunn theme ringtone that meant someone was calling my office number instead of my personal one.

"Simeon Investigations."

"We have your minion," said an inhuman voice. A demon's for sure, unless it had been synthesized. It sounded like shards of broken glass jangling in a paper bag, but I could understand it. What I couldn't understand was how anyone could kidnap Eyre without getting their asses handed to them. Gun or no gun.

"Who are you?"

More broken glass sounds, but no words. After a few seconds I realized it was laughter. At last the voice answered. "We would be foolish to divulge our true name. Call us Émigré."

"What do you want?"

"We have a job for you."

I felt a flash of red rage. My little pet fire elemental, Spark, flared up in sympathy from its urn on the windowsill, and I thought I might just burst into flame myself.

"You stupid infernal-plane motherfucker! I charge a hundred an hour. All you had to do was clear a check and I'd work for you. But now-"

"Now we have leverage, yes?"

"Let me speak to him."

"Certainly."

Brief silence, and then Eyre came on the line. His voice was weak. I wanted to reach through the phone and tear broken-glass-voice to pieces with my hands.

"Hey, Nora," he said. "I'm really sorry about this. They got hold of my sigil somehow. They know what I am."

"Eyre," I said, "listen to me. I'm coming for you. Don't fight them yourself." I was thinking, Not till I get there.

"No fear of that," he said. "It's - you'll have to see. They say they'll let me go if you work for them. But I don't think-"

Eyre's voice cut off and broken-glass-voice resumed.

"Nora Simeon is known to us as a hunter of demons. She was contracted to hunt the demon Barbatos. She fulfilled her contract and killed the mighty demon Azriel."

Actually, it was Eyre who had the final word against Azriel, but there was a lesson there I wanted this demon to learn.

"I'm a PI. An investigator. Barbatos was just a missing person job. But listen carefully. Azriel would have been in no danger from me, except she attacked Eyre. My partner, Eyre. I've got nothing against demons these days. Not unless they kidnap my friends. Do you understand me, Émigré?"

A pause. "Yes."

I knew even as I was saying it how stupid it was. But I couldn't help myself. I was too damn angry.

1: Grasping her hips, he set her on the table then whipped her shirt over her head before she realized his intention.

2: The soft press of his lips transported her into a sensual world of fantasy where she could forget there had ever been anyone before her.

3: “I can smell your arousal, Elle. It makes my mouth water as much as it hardens me. Are you going to be a good girl and let me taste you…everywhere?”

4: Fighting his pull was just too hard. With a groan he took full advantage and deepened the kiss.

5: Eleanor leaned into Cam’s embrace and conceded defeat. There was no reason to resist anymore, when this was exactly what she’d been wanting for so long.

Prologue

The Archangel Camael spread his large white wings and gazed out over the vast landscape below him. Animals ran through the woodlands and grazed on the high grasses in the valley. Streams flowed, birds flew, the sun shone brightly, and the wind whispered a slight breeze to perfume the air. All appeared beautiful and glorious to his angelic sight, as close to perfection as it would ever be. So why had the Source of All Creation grown quiet?
He floated down to the ground and stood among his six brothers. Michael, Zerachiel, Raphael, Selaphiel, Uriel, and Gabriel, all deemed brothers because of their station. They were the Archangels of Heaven, the first ones created by the Source. They would do the bidding of Good and Right, and keep order and balance among the newly created humans. So far, things had been…interesting.
Gabriel dropped to his knees and hung his head, the others immediately surrounding him. Gabriel was the Voice, the chosen mouthpiece for the Source. All communication from their creator rang through him, until two days before, when Gabriel had opened his mouth to speak to Michael and no sound had emerged—he had been struck mute. The shared telepathy hadn’t worked, either. Gabriel was locked in silence, unable to communicate with them, and all pleas to the Source had gone unanswered.
Not knowing what else to do, Michael had led his brothers back into the human realm. They weren’t Watchers—the brotherhood of angels tasked with watching over the humans and reporting back to the Source of their activities and progress—and hadn’t been called upon to remain with the humans in their realm. However, they all agreed the Source must be displeased with something they had done…or neglected to do.
Their leader, Michael, pointed. “The woods surround this place, and the animals are plenty. We will build a home and live as men until the Source once again speaks our tasks.”
The others agreed, though there was no questioning Michael in anything. They would follow where he led and do as he bid until the end of time.
Camael helped Gabriel to his feet and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. “We are all in this together, brother. You will never walk in your silence alone. You have my vow.”
“And mine,” the others said one by one.
Gabriel nodded, but his eyes couldn’t hide his torment. How long would he have to endure the torture of silence? No one had that answer, so they followed Michael into the woods and made their home.

1: “Her laugh was infectious, her smile radiant. How had her beauty seemed so muted before now?”

2: “His bare chest was a distraction and her fingers ached to touch his skin. Would the light pelt of hair be soft, or wiry? It looked soft.”

3: “All thought fled and she licked her suddenly dry lips. His gaze dropped to her mouth and she had the insane idea that he might kiss her.”

4: “It was no simple meeting of the mouths. It was ecstasy and every fantasy she’d ever had since meeting Cam.”
