Glaring at him, Lady Margaret pushed again at her hair hanging around her in such a mess that her lady’s maid would probably weep. In an imperious tone, she demanded, “You didn’t sleep in this room with me, did you?”

“Of course I did,” Connor drawled. “I couldn’t risk you slipping away in the middle of the night, now could I?”

She gripped the battered bedpost with both hands. “Did you …” her breathing became rapid. True fear shot through her expression—only an instant—before she replaced it with ice-cold disdain. In a voice so full of controlled fury it might have come from a battle-hardened soldier, she growled, “If you dared to touch me.…”

Connor softened. She was imperious and everything he disliked about the beau monde, but she was, after all, a woman. He refused to treat the fair sex shoddily, and she deserved to know that. “I didn’t touch you. I slept on the floor.”

She cast a condescendingly appraising gaze over him, nodded jerkily, and regained her aplomb. “Good. Because my brothers would cheerfully kill you if you had been un-gentlemanly.”

That was the truest statement she’d made so far. Her brothers were not men to cross.

He gave her a half-smile. “I am no gentleman. Therefore, much of what I do is ungentlemanly.”

Q&A With the Author:

1.   What do you like to do when you're not writing? 

I love to sing, mostly in choirs or small groups--singing solos are scary! Really, my favorite time to sing is when I'm alone and I have the music really loud. I also adore dancing--especially ballroom and I'm in a performance group that does a production every year set to Strauss music. Hiking and walking are other favorites. And I love to play in the water such as swim, water ski, and wake surf, or even just walk along the shore with the waves lapping at my feet.

2.  What was the hardest part of writing your book, and how did you overcome it? 

The hardest part of this particular book was developing the heroine. Because I already knew the hero as a secondary character from a previous book, he was easy, plus he was just such a fun character. The heroine was new to me so I spent a lot of time developing her character and nailing down her personality as well as what her goals and motivations were.

3. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? 

I'd love to go to England again. I've been there twice but there is so much more that I haven't seen yet. I also really want to visit Italy and see all the historic places. A book that I want to write will be set in Italy so I hope to go soon and do first-hand research for it.

4.  Where do you get information and ideas for your books? 

Ideas come from a variety of sources--lines from books that I or someone else wrote, quotes, movies, or even dreams. Information comes from meticulous research. I do tons of ongoing research about the Regency Era, and each book requires more specialized research. For this book, I spent over a year researching pirates and the British Navy. Much of my research came from books but I also took an online class from Pirates and Privateers. It was fun. I have another pirate book idea which would be great because it would help use that knowledge to work in another book. It was an awful lot of research for just one book.

5. Tell us a bit about a future project you are working on? Do you have any little sneak peeks you can share? 

I have a new book coming out at the end of the month. Though it is book 5 of my familial series, it also reads well as a stand-alone work. It's about a lady accused of murdering her husband, and the Bow Street Runner assigned to hunt her down and bring her back to face justice. But she just may bring him to his knees. Literally. It's called Not a Fine Gentleman so I hope you watch for it.

6. Now that we've gotten to know each other, tell us a story of a favorite childhood activity you used to do during the summer. It can be long or short. Funny, sad, or somewhere in between. Just make sure it's yours. Tell us a story? 

As a child, one of my favorite pastimes was to play in the pool. I'd get up, eat breakfast, take off my nightgown, and put on a swimsuit. Then I spent most of the day in the pool, either alone or with friends, sometimes go swimming again after dinner, then I'd take a bath, put on my nightgown and go to bed. What else do you do when it's 110 degrees F (or more) outside? One of my favorite pool games was to pretend we were mermaids. We crossed our feet at the ankles and swim like mermaids with tails. If only we had that fabric mermaid costumes available today! My best friend had beautiful hair that went down to her hips. She was the perfect mermaid. I was a bit envious. It was great fun and I have many happy memories of that time.

Mr. Amesbury moved closer to Elise. Her heart pounded as he neared. His smile turned smug as if he knew her thoughts.

“Despite your earlier refusal, I’m glad to finally learn your name. At least, part of it. What is your Christian name?”

“Missus,” she said through clenched teeth, and turned to leave.

“Wait. Please don’t go.”

The desperation in his softly spoken words arrested her movement. Slowly, she turned back to him. His disconcerting eyes traveled over her face with such intensity it seemed a physical touch. She wondered if he looked at every woman thusly. He probably did. The rake!

“I wanted to thank you again for your assistance in the woods.” A seductive tone rumbled his voice.

“You’re welcome,” she snapped. Her own rudeness shocked her, but this womanizing cad deserved to be brought down a peg or two.

“And to apologize,” he added, unperturbed. “I offended you that day. I do not wish to destroy any chance I might have in the future to become better acquainted.”

“I believe we are too well acquainted already.”

“But I’m in your debt. Please allow me to thank you properly.” His lazy smile and smoldering eyes made her wish she had worn a dress with a higher neckline.

She nervously touched the cameo on the ribbon at her throat. “It’s not necessary to thank me. Besides, I doubt I can trust your definition of ‘properly.’ ”

He laughed softly. “You’re a perceptive woman, Mrs. Berkley. However, I have something less nefarious in mind.” He executed a courtly bow. “I thank you, madam, from the bottom of my heart, for coming to my rescue.”

From an inner coat pocket, he retrieved a velvet drawstring bag, opened it, and inverted it in his hand. A perfect pearl lay in his palm.

He held it out to her. “There is an island in the Pacific where the natives harvest these from the ocean. You can’t see it in this light, but it’s pink. The chief gave this to me to thank me for saving his son. So, to thank you for saving the boy and me, I hope you will accept this token of my gratitude. And, I hope, as an apology.”

She stilled at his unexpected words.

He added, “I offended you with my impulsive behavior, and I humbly beg your forgiveness.” A smile lurked around the corner of his eyes despite the contrition in his tone.

Had a man ever left her so thoroughly confused? He was a muddle of a perfect gentleman and an incorrigible tease. Truly he was a cad. She’d just have to ignore those annoyingly strong elemental stirrings he aroused in her; they would be extremely inconvenient if she, as a mother and widow, followed them.

She indicated the pearl. “Truly, this is not necessary.”

“Please take it.” He grinned with roguish charm. “Otherwise, I’ll be honor-bound to find some other way to thank you.”

Something in his tone dispelled her guard. Laughing softly at his audacity, she picked up the pearl and admired it. “Very well, I accept, lest you become even more outrageous in your expression of gratitude.”

A place in her heart was touched that he’d be so thoughtful as to have brought her a gift that possessed sentimental value, rather than merely one of monetary worth—not that she should be accepting either one from a stranger, but somehow, she could not refuse.

Archly, she said, “And as you were clearly not in your right mind after such a terrible ordeal, I forgive you for your misconduct.” She wrapped the pearl in a lace handkerchief and put it in her reticule.

His smile appeared both wicked and relieved. “I cannot express how much that means to me. I have thought of you often since that day.”

“You, sir, continually breach the boundaries of propriety.” If only she could slow down her traitorous heart and force it to accept her decision to dismiss him as beneath her notice. But she couldn’t simply dismiss someone whose very presence filled the entire garden, and whose thoughtfulness touched her more than she cared to admit.

She almost uttered a sound of disgust. When had she become so easily ensnared by the charms of a libertine? She took another step backward and lost her balance. With a cry, she teetered at the edge of the pond.

His hand shot out to catch her by the arms. Laughter leaped into his eyes while he slowly pulled her closer to his broad chest. His clean and earthy and so very masculine scent crept into her senses. For one brief moment of insanity, she enjoyed his nearness, his arms around her making her feel safe, protected, desirable.

Where had she left her wits?

“Thank you,” she whispered, dropping her eyes and shrugging off his touch.

He dropped his hands to his sides. “Do you really fear me so? Or is it that this isn’t proper, either?”

“Of course this isn’t proper. And I’m wise to mistrust a man whose conduct and intentions are questionable, at best. Unless I have my gun, of course.”

3.  What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

Confidence is a major stumbling block. I always worry that my books aren't good enough and that my latest manuscript--whatever it is--is the most ridiculous, worthless drivel that has ever had the misfortune of being put on a page. I usually overcome it by talking to a critique partner. Reading fan mail sure helps, too.

4.   What kind of music do you listen to while you write?

I like either classical music or new age--nothing with lyrics or a drum beat. There's a Pandora station called Regency Classical that I like to listen to while I write those first few chapters. It help me create that believable Regency feel.

She glanced back at the doorway. He had arrived. With hair as dark as a starless night, a tall figure clad almost entirely in black strode toward them. Something shifted inside her and she took a step back from his presence of power. As he neared, his air of deadliness swept ahead of him like a giant clearing the path. He paused and focused on her. Something changed in his expression. He studied her in a way that sent heat from her face clear down to her toes. Oh heavens, if these were the kind of looks he was capable of giving, he clearly was dangerous to ladies, but not in the way she’d thought.

Her attention zeroed in on his lips, and hers tingled in response. Powerless under his stare, she wrenched her gaze from his and nervously touched her brooch as if to assure herself it remained in place, anything to restore her good sense, which had quite literally failed her for a moment.
