Blurb:

When the woman I’ve longed for decides she wants to have a baby, there’s only one man for the job -- me. Now, if I can just convince her.

I wanted Clara the first time I saw her two years ago, but as soon as I figured out we’d be working together, I knew I had to stay far away.

And the friend zone has been working just fine.

Well, mostly.

The night she tells me she’s ready to get knocked up by some random donor changes everything.

Not on my watch.

I might not be partner material -- running the family business and my new hockey team keeps me so busy. I barely have time to talk to a woman, let alone fall in love. But there’s no way I’m letting my friend pick Donor #257, or anyone besides me.

The arrangement is perfect. I make my donation, she gets her baby, we go back to being friends. No strings. No messy heartbreak.

Until we decide it’ll be a lot more fun to make a direct deposit and get her pregnant the old-fashioned way. That spark between us? It’s a blazing fire I have no desire to extinguish.

Our baby proposition just got a lot more complicated.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from IndieSage PR and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

SYNOPSIS:

The enemy of my enemy is my friend?

Lucille Amboise has been serving as Enforcer to the Vampire Council for centuries; a role she’s always taken extremely seriously. When an investigation causes her to cross paths with a human tracker who is hunting the same criminal, she decides to join forces, at least on the surface, to increase her chances of bringing the rogue vampire to justice.
Two things she didn’t count on: The growing connection between the human and her, and the ever growing risk of losing either her life or her heart if he finds out about her true nature.
Valentino Conti’s family has lived on the fringes of human society for generations. He comes from a long line of hunters, not of animals, but of so-called Nightwalkers. His latest investigation takes him to London, where he’s surprised to find a mysterious woman on the trail of the same murderous monster he’s after.
They begin to work together, but he can’t contain his curiosity: Who is his new partner, and what secrets she does she hide?
All books, including this one, in the Vampires of London series are stand-alone and can be listened to out of order.

My Thoughts:

Mr. Edwards has been the perfect narrator for this series.  My respect for the way he brings a story to life just grows with every book I listen to.  He adds humanity into the author’s words which helps with the video that plays in my mind.  The only issue I had was with the speed of this latest book.

While listening, I had to go in and check to see what speed was selected because my ears had a hard time connecting with what was being said.  It seemed as if the standard speed was going by too quickly – as if our narrator was speedreading.  This was the first time that I had to turn it down so that I could concentrate on what the author created.

This may be Lucille’s story but if you have followed the series than you already know that we have met her before.  If you’ve not followed than I would start at the beginning so that you can understand the type of woman she is–even though she was a secondary character in the previous two books.  This latest goes more into what her job is about–she becomes the star.

I almost felt like I should be sitting by a fire in a wingback chair with a glass of mulled wine.  Sad part is that where I live its summertime but I just might do the chair and fire thing anyway.  I could get a fake fireplace and that way I would still get the feeling without the heat.  What was even sadder was that the time went by too quickly.

Our author has created a story with plenty of suspense, action and romance.  If you like a kick **s woman and a couple of men that bring out the mystery of the story than you’re going to enjoy this latest Vampires of London.  It may also make you curious as to what other type of books she has written.  My problem is that I’ve come to love listening to her audiobooks-but that’s not always a bad thing.

Excerpt:

Valentino stole a glance at Lucille as they left the pub together. What a peculiar young woman. Everything about her, from the way she carried herself to her choice of Scotch signaled that she was an old soul. The fact that she had joined him out here meant that apparently she was fearless as well.

Was she part of the same underground he belonged to? The online message boards, the discussion groups that met virtually to discuss any supernatural activity they had come across. It had been one of those anonymous reports of vampirism that had brought him to London in the first place. Was she active in those circles? Or was her presence here a coincidence?

Her catlike movements as she walked alongside him toward the feeding site suggested she was strong and well trained. She definitely knew how to fight.

He wouldn't be surprised if she had some hidden weapons somewhere underneath her long coat. He had some too, after all.

When they reached the bin he had inspected on his own earlier, he pulled out the bottle of Luminol again and sprayed the area where he knew the blood to be.

She leaned in closer and followed the direction of the spray pattern with her index finger.

"Interesting."

Valentino smiled. "As I said, the evidence is right here."

Lucille stood back and stared at the ground surrounding the area. "It wasn't much of a struggle, so perhaps the victim came here willingly."

Valentino raised an eyebrow. "How do you know this?"

Lucille pointed at a very faint muddy footprint which the winter rains had done their best to erase. "If two men had fought here, they would have knocked over some of these bags of rubbish. They would have left smudged prints and scuff marks from their shoes. I don't see any of that here."

She turned to face him, her eyes narrow and darting back and forth between him and their surroundings. "Do you think the murderer might have arrived here by train? Or is he a local?"

"I think he is not the sort of man who could travel by train without drawing too much attention to himself. He is the sort who stays in the shadows."

Lucille nodded, as though she understood him perfectly, even those things he’d left unsaid. She really was peculiar, unlike any woman he'd met before.

Could he risk it?

It had been a long time since he'd ever told an outsider about his calling, and that had backfired spectacularly. Suddenly years of history didn't matter anymore, and the woman he'd opened up to because he wanted to spend his life with her had simply left.

But this right here was different; there was no history. What did he have to lose?

"There are more things between heaven and earth than most people choose to see or believe…"

Lucille folded her arms as she focused on him. He had her full attention.

"This murderer is not strictly a man," Valentino added.

"Why. Is it a woman?" she asked, cocking her head to the side.

The peculiar glint in her eye told him that he was on the right track. She was testing him; Valentino would bet his life on it.

"He's a Nightwalker. A vampire."

Lucille pursed her lips and glanced at the bin with the blood evidence on it, then back at him. The corner of her mouth twitched in amusement; it was so subtle he would have missed it if he wasn't paying attention.

"You're a hunter," she remarked, as though it was the most natural thing in the world.

He nodded. She knew the terminology. Unless she was the best actress he'd ever come across, nothing he'd told her so far had shocked her in any way.

"You have unusual methods. More like a forensic investigator than a hunter," she added.

He nodded again. "And your methods? Old school. More like a tracker."

Lucille smiled briefly. "I favor a more intuitive approach."

"Have you been at this long?" he asked. He was thirty-four, not old by any stretch of the imagination, but Lucille looked about ten years younger—exceptionally young for someone in their line of work. Perhaps it was a family affair for her, just like it had been for him.

"My entire life," she said.

Fine, so she wanted to keep things vague. He didn't mind. Their line of work was lonely and unappreciated for the most part. To run into another hunter was its own reward. He didn't need anything more than that for now.

"How about you make good on that promise then?" she said. "Of buying me another drink."

Valentino grinned. If she didn't look so serious he might have thought she was flirting with him.

They walked back together, and he again marveled at her smooth, deliberate movements, the strong spring in her step. It was a lonely existence; living on the fringes of society, hunting creatures that most people only acknowledged in their nightmares.

The times had changed since his parents and grandparents had been around. Mainstream society no longer believed in the supernatural, as he had so painfully found out in the past. Continuing in their footsteps had earned him a solitary life. It would be a nice change of pace to combine forces with a like-minded soul.

Plus, Lucille was an exceptionally beautiful woman. He would be lying to himself if he thought that she hadn't affected him on some deeper level. But he'd been at this too long to simply take other people at face value. He still needed to find out if he could trust Lucille.

"Right. Let's get that drink then," he said.

Knightly

If practice makes perfect, I should excel at pretending that Heath Miller doesn’t affect me. That I’m immune to that wide jaw, taut body, and the unique woodsy-aftershave-engine-oil scent that makes my ovaries explode.
Since before I could walk, he’s been my champion. My best friend. The one problem I can’t solve. Why? If I tell him I love him, I’ll lose him and his adorable daughter. Maybe the best Christmas gift I can give him—and myself—is to turn in the keys to my B&B and put some distance between us.

Heath

I’ve made my share of mistakes. Lost my MIT scholarship, came home to fix cars and romance Kentbury’s female tourists—until I wound up a single father. For all eight years of Cassie’s life, Knightly’s been my anchor.
I’ve changed. Cassie’s the best part of me, and Knightly’s been there every step of the way. But as Christmas lays its mantle of magic over Kentbury, she drops a bomb—she’s following a dream to New York City. I’ve got one week to
do everything, say everything I’ve never dared. To convince my best friend to be mine—ours—for all the holidays to come.

Prologue

Heath

I hate surprises almost as much as I hate Sunday brunch at my parents. My family and I don’t get along. It’s a cliché, but we’re like water and oil. I became everything they hate and I hate everything they represent. My parents are judgmental. During my late teens and up until a few months ago, I fucked around—a lot—in every sense.

Needless to say, I lost my scholarship to MIT during my sophomore year. The dean called me irresponsible. My parents wrote me off as a failure until I came back to Kentbury to take over my uncle’s car repair shop after he died. I try to keep myself out of trouble and off the town’s radar. I steer away from the women in town. But I do have fun with the tourists who stay at the lodge. It’s simple. They’re here for a week or a weekend. Then they’re gone for good.

“But I ran out of luck,” I sigh and look down.

In the bouncy chair lies Cassie, my one-month-old baby. The fuss of black hair is covered by a pink hat. Her arms aloft as if dreaming of cuddling her mother. I slide my pinky into her open hand and watch as her fingers curl around it. I feel her soft breath on the back of my hand. Already the tension is melting away as I watch my sweet little girl sleep in peace. She’s so innocent, she doesn’t know that our lives have been forever changed.

“Maybe I just got lucky,” I whisper close to her ear. “You and I are going to make it work. I’ll make you proud little one.”

There’s a slight knock on the door. I kiss her tiny hand before I open it for Knightly.

“That must be, Knightly, coming to save the day,” I whisper to Cassie and kiss her tiny hand.

There’s so much I could tell her about my best friend, but not enough time. I only tell Cassie what’s important, “She’s going to become your favorite person. We call her Lee for short.”

When I swing the door open, I finally relax. Lee’s here.

Her big brown eyes narrow locking her gaze at me. “I need a big explanation,” she says handing me the shopping bags she carries with her.

“Hello, Lee,” I greet her and stare at all the bags she brought as she unzips her blue parka.

“I got everything that you asked for,” she says. Bishop is bringing the big items. What do you need that for?”

Her voice is neutral, but I know her well. She’s easy to read. The expression on her face matches her mood. I know when she’s excited about something. I can tell when she’s tired or cranky. Or, like right now, when she’s upset that I’m keeping her in the dark. As she takes off all her winter gear and sets her snow boots on the plastic tray, I close the door avoiding the sight of her body.

I like to think of Lee Harris as my best friend. One of the boys. She’s the kid who I hung out with since she could walk. I endless practice not noticing her sweet curves or the way her long, dark, curly hair cascades over her shoulders once she takes off her hat. I’m a shitty person and can’t do relationships. I’d never do anything to jeopardize my relationship with Lee. Ever.

I tilt my head toward the living room. “Follow me.”

“Oh my God, did Santa bring me a baby?” She claps once and takes out the tube of hand sanitizer that she always carries around.

Without asking, she snaps the belt of the bouncy chair open and takes her into her arms.

“Hey, beautiful, welcome to Kentbury. You’re going to love this place.”

Cassie snuggles closer to Lee who looks beautiful holding my baby. I swallow hard and remind myself that she’s a friend who deserves a lot more than a guy who sucks at life.

“You’re not going to ask anything?”

“The mom came to the lodge earlier, asking for you.” She sweeps my body with her gaze. “Tall, dark hair, light blue eyes and was friends with the Lodge’s owner.”

Lee rolls her eyes and sighs.

“You and Kingston need to stop sleeping around or…” Lee touches her mouth lightly with the tips of her fingers. “Oops, it happened.”

“You could’ve warned me.” I grit my teeth.

“I could’ve.” She shrugs. “Maybe next time.”

I glare at her. She’s not funny but I don’t have the energy to deal with her banter. Though, maybe she doesn’t have much energy either because she’s not as witty as usual.

“How are you handling the news?” She asks with a serious tone, though her gaze remains on Cassie.

“I’m dealing, I guess,” I close my eyes briefly taking a deep breath. “Can you picture me as a father?”

I gesture to myself, showing her the hot mess that I am. Then, point to the apartment I live in which is above the car shop.

“I’m a fucked-up guy who can’t finish anything. I can’t even get along with my parents. What am I supposed to do with a baby?”

“Love her,” she answers.

“You should give yourself some credit, Heath. She has the best dad in the world, and you two have me and my family.”

I smile at her and say the obvious, “I can always count on you.”

Lee studies Cassie. She smiles at her, but her face looks a little saddened. Her brown eyes are slightly red and watery. Was she crying? I’m sure it’s nothing. Later, when I’m not busy with my baby I’ll ask her what’s wrong. In the meantime, I have to learn how to be a dad.

Maybe I can find a book on how to be a father online. It worked with the car shop, and so far, I’ve managed it well enough.
