Read an Excerpt:

“You’re not for real, right?” I shook my head. “You’re just...so nice. No one’s this nice.”

Alex held my gaze. His eyes were mesmerizing pools of warm brown. “Listening and caring is just being decent. It shouldn’t be shocking.” He lifted a hand and smoothed my hair back from my face.

This wasn’t normal boss behavior, but at some point, I’d forgotten Alex was my supervisor. The air felt warm and damp, and it smelled like the ocean again, the scent wild and comforting at the same time.

Alex’s hand stilled against my temple.

Hardly breathing, I lifted my left hand and brushed my fingers against his.

He squeezed my hand.

I reached for his other hand, and either I stepped close, or he pulled me in. Or maybe it happened at the same time. We were toe-to-toe now, inches away from full-body contact. My brain hazed over as I tilted my head up.

He angled his head down.

Our noses touched. Our mouths were an inch away from each other.

“This is probably about to be a bad idea.”

His voice, low and husky, sent a pleasant tingle down my neck. “Terrible,” I whispered.

I dove into his arms, and he pressed his mouth to mine.

EXCERPT:

Zeke squinted his eyes in reaction to her reddish glow. He took a deep breath, filling the top of his lungs. “But I can help! I have knowledge of their weaponry, their tactics, and their mindset.”

“You have helped enough…believe me. It’s best you hide until the intruders are ridden. Just like on Murminilia.”

“But—” He reached for her arm, and winced. “Ouch! Your skin. It’s burning.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Why do you seek to touch me?”

He broke eye contact. “I don’t know,” he said, shifting his gaze to the Whispering Trees. He rubbed his elbow and tucked his chin. “I…I, I think I love you.”

She remained stoic. “Has Mayatte taught you nothing? Even when we are in peril, you still can’t see past yourself—past your desires. You have put an entire ecosystem in danger, all the while lust and power fill your heart.”

His lip trembled. “But—”

“There is no but. There is no love, only Mayatte. What you feel is a desire to control and conquer. You want to be a part of me so you can understand me. That is not love. There is no love here. There is only Mayatte. She sought to embrace you, and you betrayed her for your own gain. You do not love me, you are not Mayatte, you love yourself.”

Zeke’s knees weakened as he was struck with blow after blow of veracity.

Small blotches hindered Naña’s vision, yet she revealed no weakness. She closed her eyes and inhaled high and deep. “And despite all of this, Mayatte always offers forgiveness and extends a means of absolution.”

Zeke quivered from the thunder of a booming hollow drum. He turned his head, seeking out the source of the loud rhythmic beating.

As he scanned the island, he couldn’t help but notice that the entire skyline was flooded with military-grade helicopters.

He sunk even further within himself, refusing to even look in Naña’s direction. Without hesitating or looking back, he burst into a full sprint towards the helicopters.

“Where are you going? Do not be foolish!” Naña crumbled, groveling in pain. What’s happening to me? She leaned against the base of a whispering tree, propping herself to her feet.

She attempted to give pursuit to Zeke, but both femurs fractured with her initial step, crumbling her body to the island floor. She hollered out in agony. I can’t just lay here. Get up, Naña! All this has happened because of me.

For months, Jesse has been envious of her twin sister Bryn and even has a crush on Bryn’s gorgeous, popular boyfriend, Quinton. When Jesse awakens from a coma to learn that everyone thinks she IS Bryn, the option of actually taking over her sister’s life is beyond tempting, but there’s a downside. She’d have to give up her relationship with Ethan, her best friend and the only person she trusts. Could she actually live s Bryn for the rest of her life? And if her family and friends found out, would they ever forgive her?

Snippet:

“I don’t know how long I was out, but I came to lying on an exquisitely comfortable bed. All around me soft, fuzzy blankets cocooned me and my head rested on a pillow, so light and feathery that it rivaled even the most comfortable pillow I’d ever slept on before. For a second I laid there, feeling calm and oddly relaxed. Then I remembered that I should be in pain, terrible, mind-numbing pain. I sat straight up, my back stiff like a board. I looked all around, frantically trying to understand where I was. The room was the same shade of bubble gum pink as my bedroom at home but everything else was wrong.
Why was I here in this strange bed? Where was Jesse, where were the car and the screaming teenagers? From the doorway, I heard a soft, nearly soundless rustling and then, out of nowhere, a woman appeared, filling the entire doorframe with her broad smile and gentle green eyes. “It’s all right darling,” she said with a strong Southern accent “I’m here to help you through the transition.” I was getting more confused by the minute. She continued on undaunted. “My name is Maggie, and I’m here to answer any questions you might have.”

I glanced around the room again. Maggie had noiselessly crossed the floor, but we were all alone. I could tell Maggie was my best shot at figuring out what was going on. “Where am I?” I asked, working fervently to subdue the sense of hysteria that kept trying push its way up. Maggie reached out and lifted my chin with her fingers so that she could look me squarely in the eyes. I couldn’t feel her touch. Why couldn’t I feel her touch? Were my nerve endings damaged?  Was I paralyzed? “You moved on, honey,” she said. Her words came at me but I couldn’t absorb them; they didn’t make sense. What did she mean, I’d moved on, and how did she know anything about my life? Maggie’s chest rose and fell as if she’d taken a deep breath, as if she were shoring up for what she was about to do. I watched her in horror, suddenly understanding what her words meant, yet still needing her to finish. “You’re dead, sweetheart,” she said gently but firmly, “You’re never going back to earth.”” I looked down at my body, my arms, my legs and suddenly realized why I felt no pain. My heart didn’t beat, my blood didn’t flow. I looked like me, but now I was different. I might as well have been a colored beam of light or a hologram. I was a whisper of my former self. My hand went to my mouth in shock and then I dropped my hand, realizing I had reacted out of habit and I that I had no hand, at least not a solid one. Maggie watched me calmly as I worked through the news. She had seen this before, I could tell. After awhile, she asked me, “Do you want to see your family now?”I was stunned again. How could she know the questions that burned in my mind, but she did. I looked up at Maggie, feeling very small and unsure about anything. It seemed like a minute ago that I was flying, on top of the world and now… all I could muster was a simple nod yes. Lovingly, Maggie reached out and took my hand, and although I couldn’t actually feel it, I found it comforting and followed her without protest. “Where are we going?” I asked as we walked. Without turning around, I heard her response, “We’re going to the observation room, darlin’.”

I Am A Reader Presents: Guardian Of The Way by Diane Moat; #BlogTour, #OutNow, #Giveaway

guardian-of-the-way

Guardian of the Way
by Diane Moat

It’s been two centuries since someone murdered the last Guardian of the Way, closing off this world from the many realms of magic and fae.

Cassiopeia “Cass” Wilson is an eighteen-year-old living on her own for the first time. The only magic she’s interested in is the kind that will help her pay the bills on time. Little does she know that a trip to the hospital after a fainting spell will change her life forever.

Cass soon learns she may be fae, and everything points to her being the next Guardian of the Way. There’s just one problem: whoever—or whatever—killed the last Guardian wants Cass dead too.

Cass quickly runs into problems, and an attack by djinn is just the first. But Cass joins forces with a wrath daemon, were-creatures, and fae on a quest to reach the Lighthouse—the site of the Way.

Cass soon learns about wizards desperate to keep the Way closed to serve their dark purposes, and she comes to a crossroads: will she take the test to become the new Guardian and leave her normal life behind? Or will the Way remain closed to all who need it?

"Cass Wilson takes us right along with her in this journey, revealing a world she never knew existed, with a diverse new tribe of companions, protectors, and friends. A must read for anyone who wonders what else is out there beyond what we can see." by C.S.

"A strong story, full of surprises. Getting there is half the fun, but is she meant for this challenging job between many worlds? Quite worth a read." by M. Hayden

Excerpt

A massive lighthouse sits off the coast of Maine near the town of Cutler. The building has stood empty for over two-hundred years. Those who can make out the edifice view a tower of stone and paned glass unlike any other lighthouse they have ever seen. The specific dimensions are hard to determine as this structure, unlike most lighthouses, is not a single tower. Instead, it has a broader base than usual, with what appear to be turrets at the top. The construction may even consist of two buildings connected at the middle. But not many people question this odd lighthouse, or even wonder why it remains vacant.

This is because most Humans can’t actually see the Lighthouse. A few who have a drop of Fey, Were or “Other” blood may perceive an ordinary lighthouse. And some instinct guides these souls to avoid the building, though they wouldn’t be able to voice why if they were asked. True Fey, Were, Vampires, and other supernatural beings can certainly identify the building known to them as the Lighthouse, but none of them dare try to enter. Those genuine descendants know the Way is blocked, and has been for the two-hundred years the Lighthouse has stood dark.

The place has sat empty since the most recent Lighthouse Guardian died one horrible night at thepinnacle. The Guardian had only been Guardian for four-hundred years and was killed well before his time. Inside the Lighthouse lies the only permanent causeway (the “Way”) between the worlds of magic and the world of the mundane. Fey, Were, Vampires and other non-Humans, despite the barrier to journeying across from inside the Lighthouse, could still travel between these two worlds using costly magic spells—but such a trip is difficult and dangerous. The entrance to the Way closed at the time of the Guardian’s death, and neither magic nor mundane had been able to open it since.

On one late evening in particular, a large man sat under a tree just outside of Cutler, eating the stew his mate had made earlier and placed in a storage dish. The season was early fall, but already the nights had a bite to them. The man was on his third shift of watch duty in a row. He had pulled this job ten months previously and was glad the rotations were only a year long. He would be back home in Louisiana before the truly bitter winter was well underway.

The man was suddenly blinded by a light coming from the very top of the Lighthouse. The man’s reflexes were frighteningly quick, but even so he dropped his stew. Flabbergasted, he stared directly at the light for a full twenty seconds, until he no longer cared about the meal. He turned away from the brightness, and shedding his clothes, he found his legs shortening and his arms lengthening. In less than a minute, a large dark-grey Wolf shook himself once, then again. Glancing back for a final look at the Lighthouse, the Wolf began running toward the town.

He wouldn’t stop running until he was at his pack leader’s house. From there, word would spread like a virus. Everything was different now. For somewhere in this ordinary domain, two minutes before, a brand-new Guardian had been born.

Loving the Book Presents: A Doorway Back To Forever by Nanette O'Neal; #SummerCountdown & #Giveaway

Musician, author, and avid Star Trek fan, Nanette loves anything that challenges her mind and enlightens her spirit. She got the idea for her book series from her faith and love of family. Wouldn’t it be neat to travel back and forth through time to discover hidden powers and your true potential? Nanette thought so, and thus began the Doorway series. Believe is the first of seven books designed to entertain and inspire both young and seasoned readers. She is a frequent hiker at Glacier National Park, loves her dear husband and family, and when she isn't writing, takes her dogs on long walks.

Q&A with the Author:

3.  What is the thing you struggle with the most while writing? And how do you defeat it?

I struggle most with finding time to write. There’s always something that gets in the way if you let it, and when I do make time, my mind is often flooded with other things I should be doing. I’ve learned to budget my time better and to not beat myself up if I don’t reach a daily goal. I’ve also learned that if I give back to the writing community by doing critiques or reviews, it inspires me in my personal craft, making it easier to write.

4.   What kind of music do you listen to while you write?

I’m a musician, so music is always running through my head! But the best music for me is something epic and uplifting. It motivates me and gets the creative juices going!

Connect with the Author here:

Every great warrior begins by taking a stand.

Best friends share everything, right? Unless it’s a secret that could cost them their lives. Robyn and Kit are born with forbidden magic-sense, the power to see and hear beyond Earthly sight and sound. It’s a curse that haunts them, but the girls are strangely drawn to it—could there be more to this power than they’ve been told?

When they spill their secret, it opens a doorway back to Forever—a beautiful realm where magic-sense began. They learn the truth: they have been given a noble gift. It connects them to the Skyborn royalty of this new world. They’ve been summoned back by the forces for good to preserve the kingdom and revive the power where it once flourished—on Earth. It can thrive again, if Robyn and Kit are brave enough to follow.

However, the doorway awakens more than magical fairy-tales. A dark force is unleashed—one that has battled the Skyborn since time began, and it wants the girls dead, the Earth destroyed.

Beyond the doorway is where the adventure begins—trickery, kidnapping, a prison break, rescue teams, sword fights, magical gold-dust, holographic medallions, and singing orbs—but only for those who have the courage to believe.

Snippet:

“Good night, Kit.” Her mom’s voice echoed in a weary monotone.
“But Mom, it’s still summer vaca—”
“You need to get some sleep before our big move. Good night.”
“But—”
“You heard your mother,” her dad said. “It’s bedtime. Good night.”
Kit muttered to herself. “Sure, now that things are getting good. Always sending me to bed. Like I’m still a little kid.”
She had found an awesome hiding place—molded in the living room couch behind the stack of boxes. It was perfectly out of sight from her parents sitting in the kitchen, but not out of earshot. Listening in on their private conversations had been a game she had mastered when she was ten. At first, it had been to find out where they’d go on vacation, or what kind of punishment her little brother, McCoy, would get for trying to teach the cat to swim, but ever since she turned twelve, things had gotten serious. Last month, the conversations were less about family things and more about scary things—things she thought might have to do with their need to move so suddenly.
She wasn’t looking forward to it. If she could only listen a little longer, she might be able to figure out what was going on. She huffed again, a little louder this time. There was no use arguing when her parents banded together. Her plan was a wash, and she’d have no chance to overhear anything. She rolled her eyes and clomped down the hallway.
Kit shut her bedroom door hard enough to make her anger known, but not enough to wake her younger sister, Shirley. At least in the new house, she’d have her own room. Maybe I can still hear. She opened the door, letting in a sliver of light from the kitchen. She turned to allow for ample hearing space, tucked her hair behind her left ear, then froze in place. She could hear a few things, but not enough to make out anything juicy.
Wait—what was that? The rustling of papers from inside her room distracted her. Shirley was still asleep. The window was closed. What could have made that noise? She squinted in the darkness and brushed her hair back again. A presence entered the room—chilling, menacing—one she couldn’t see, but could feel as if it pressed against her. A tingle ran through her bones. She shuddered at the eeriness—it was overwhelming.
The unknown figure let out a dark laugh that echoed through the room and made the hair on her arms stand up. A voice followed, deep and full of vengeance.
“They thought they could banish me forever—fools, all of them. Underestimating my power and intelligence was their first mistake. Well, they’ll be sorry. I have the power now to destroy them and their precious legend.”
Kit flipped on the light. The presence she felt vanished. The room was empty except for her and her zonked-out sister.  Who was that she heard speaking? She staggered, then realized she had forgotten to breathe. She put her hand to her chest and gulped for air. Am I crazy?
A feeling came over Kit like someone else had entered the room. Forces of invisible energy hovered a few feet in front of her. A single presence, then a second, then a third, whispering at first—a conversation—pensive, serious, unlike the first lone voice. They surrounded her, as though she was meant to be a part of it, to hear every word.
“My son, the Golden-Heart cannot lie.  It is time.” It was a male voice, solemn, urgent, yet gentle.
“We love you, son. You know what you must do.” A female voice this time. It cracked as if she had been crying.
“Yes, Mother, Father. It all fits together.  The ancient book concurs.” The answering voice was from a younger man, yet as gentle as the other two.
Who are they?
“The Legend is to be fulfilled at all costs,” said the older male. “Take this vessel and the Book of Ancient Tomorrows. Guard them faithfully.”
“I understand. I will not fail.”
These voices were so different from the first. A father, a mother, a grown son—concern, urgency. Kit scanned the room. Empty, yet she called out anyway. “Who’s there? What’s going on?” No one replied. The feeling in the room left as quickly as it had come.
Kit’s hair lay in wet strands along the back of her neck. She tried to slow her breathing, but the gasps wouldn’t stop.  Shirley stirred for a moment, then turned toward the wall. Kit switched off the lights and sat down at the foot of her bed.
Eavesdropping on her parents was only a game. Hearing conversations from invisible people either meant she was crazy…
…or she had magic-sense.
Either way, she was in big trouble.
