GRAYSON

Pine trees tower above me. Soft breezes rustle my hair. Beams of moonlight peep through the canopy of branches. I stroll beside Dex, my hand resting on his forearm.

We’re a man and woman, walking along… something that happens every second of every minute of every hour of every day. It shouldn’t be a big deal.

To me, it is.

I’ve never touched a man before—not even the Prism Master—let alone someone like Dex. My insides are doing flip flops. Dex’s leather armor is so soft and firm. I can’t help but wonder if that’s how his skin would feel as well. And kissing? I shiver. That’s way too much to consider. A voice starts echoing through my mind. It sounds a lot like Lady R.

You’re so excited walk beside a man. How pathetic. Even from a distance, no one would think you and Dex are together. You’re too short and that dress is for a servant. And once anyone gets close enough to see your face? You’re plain as dirt.

A weight of sadness settles on my shoulders. I just escaped Lady R. Yet, she still lives on in my head. The worst part of all is simple: she’s right. Dex looks like a warrior-king of old, standing center stage in all his glory. I’m only an extra who cheers him on from behind the scenes.

My eyes sting with hidden pain. This started off as a nice moment. Now every step forward hurts me a little more.

Even though he can’t see, Dex slowly leads us to a great stone gateway. The heavy wooden door sits ajar. We step through the opening and into the city itself. It’s a lot of dark wooden buildings with slate roofs and thin windows.

And it’s dead.

Back in the woods, I feel life all around me. Insects chirp. Small animals scurry about. Everything is green and healthy. But here, there’s nothing but darkness and grim. Empty windows stare out from run-down buildings. Doorways hang loose on their hinges. Our footsteps sound like a lonely drumroll in the night.

Dex leads us toward a building made of dark wood. The tallest tower of all winds up from its center. A large wooden sign sits on a pole before the place.

Thornfield.

Seeing that name in writing brings back a memory. The first book I found hidden in the Bartlebee included a building called Thornfield as well.

“Is that your home?” I ask.

Dex inhales. “The scent is right. Why, does something look different?”

“The sign says Thornfield and the building is huge.”

“That’s the place, all right.”

An idea appears. Maybe this is a sign. After all, there are other ways where my life mirrors that book.

Jane Eyre.

Grayson

My escape spell dropped me off on a random floor somewhere. Literally. Talk about awkward. For a moment, all I can focus on is the literal pain in my butt.

“Okay, that hurt,” I murmur.

“Grayson!” Oh, no. That’s the Prism Master.

The mirror dropped me off at the Refraction palace. As in, the one place I did not want to visit.

Rising, I slap on a smile. It’s never worked on the Prism Master before, but it’s not like there are a ton of options here. “I bet you’re wondering how I escaped. You see—”

A shiver runs up my back. It’s so intense, I forget what I was about to say.

What’s happening?

Suddenly, all my nerve endings go on alert. No doubt about it. Someone’s behind me. Inch by inch, I turn around. And there, I see a man.

Not just any man, mind you. He’s the one I’ve daydreamed about. Everything’s perfect, from his strong jawline and full lips to his very long and touchable hair. And the fact that he’s wearing an all-black outfit with a cape? That’s never a bad fashion choice. I may even be drooling a little.

My friend, Elle, keeps telling me that I’ve never met a real guy before. I’ve told to her stop being dramatic. But now? Elle is so right.

The Prism Master addresses the dream man. “If you’ll excuse us, Dex, I must speak with my ward.”

Dex. That’s his name.

I should be worried about the Prism Master and my failed escape attempt. I’m not. Instead, Dex and I stay in a serious state of eye lock. Connections form. Something awakens inside me.

“Dex,” repeats the Prism Master. “I asked you to leave.”

My brows lift. The Prism Master has beaten into my head that I’m a tower tithe, end of story. I must be linked with this Dex. Could he be a Rapunzel? I’d never heard of a male Rapunzel before. But if Dex is one? I’m in.

Dex ignores the Prism Master. “Grayson… Is that your full name?”

“Grayson Eyre,” I reply.

Dex smiles. “Nice to find you.”

My insides get all twisty at those words. I have the strange impulse to grab this guy’s palm and race for the exit. I even raise my hand a little, ready to clasp his.

Suddenly, lights flare all around. A magical wind strikes up. Cords snake out from the mirror behind the Prism Master. A sense of weightlessness surrounds me. Fast as a whip, I’m dragged into the mirror.

Xpresso Tours Presents: Towers And Tithes by Christina Bauer; #BlogTour, #NowAvailable, #OutNow, #TBR, #Live, #Giveaway

Towers And Tithes
Christina Bauer
Fairy Tales of the Magicorum, #8
Publication date: November 9th 2021
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

I’m a Tower Tithe with a Rapunzel problem. That’s not as weird as it sounds.

Ever wonder how Rapunzel survives without leaving her home? After all, someone must stock groceries, buy hair products and fix the plumbing. Witches don’t wield toilet brushes, so “Rapunzel care” becomes the job of Tower Tithes like me. Not that we choose this gig. We’re just unlucky elves who get magically chucked into servitude. Since our kind live for ages, being a Tower Tithe can drag on for thousands of years… and I’m eighteen. Yipes.

That said, it wouldn’t be too awful if I had a cool Rapunzel. No such luck.

I serve none other than Lady R, the social media sensation and sadist who lives in Manhattan’s famous Apex Towers. With the help of her manager—a witch named Jocasta—Lady R releases daily gossip videos while assigning me “torture chores.” Many tasks are designed to remind me how Lady R is the gorgeous variety of elf, while I’m beyond plain. I spend a lot of time scheming my escape.

My work pays off when an eccentric billionaire offers to magically set me free. The catch? I must move to Arizona and become his personal assistant. Needless to say, I rush for the door. Turns out, my new employer is none other than Lady R’s ex-boyfriend, Dex, a guy who was blinded in a strange accident and has since become a recluse.

In other words, I ran from my fairy tale life, but it found me again anyway.

At this point, I should head for the hills, yet I simply can’t leave Dex. For the first time, I truly feel comfortable around someone. In all honesty, it’s probably because I have self-esteem issues and Dex can’t see my bland face. Even so, it’s all good until Lady R discovers where I am. And that leads to my Rapunzel problem.

With Lady R back in the picture, can I still find my happily ever after? The truth will emerge soon enough.

Because my name is Grayson Eyre, and this is my story.

Ideal for readers who crave a mash-up between Rapunzel and Jane Eyre.

At last, Elle (never call her Cinderella) is reunited with Alec, the Prince of Le Charme Jewelers. Yay! But the pair soon discovers that Alec’s gemstone empire is about to go bankrupt. Boo. So our favorite couple devises a kick-ass scheme to save Le Charme. To announce their plan, Elle and Alec will hold a Glass Slipper Festival complete with music, dancing and cake. Lots of cake.

There’s only one problem. The Unseelie fae have returned.

Talk about bad news. No one combines lovely looks with dark intentions better than the Unseelie. Now, those nefarious fae want to destroy Elle, Alec and any hope for Le Charme. It doesn’t end there, either. The Unseelie are also targeting Elle’s stepsister, Agatha, as well as her old friend, Jacoby. And when will the Unseelie launch their deadly schemes? The Glass Slipper Festival.

Because fairies and frosting don’t mix.

Alec

“It’s a tricky thing about living by the so-called Cinderella life template,” I explain to Elle. “Everyone knows that the Cinderellas have it rough. That evil stepmother alone is enough to break even the strongest person.”

Elle raises her hand. “Testify.”

“But guys like me? The princes? It’s never easy for us, either. I’ve looked into the lives hundreds of Prince Charmings. Here’s the bottom line. If your parents are forcing you into a choosing a random bride at a ball, then something is wrong.”

“I never thought of it that way.” Elle fixes me with a look that overflows with understanding. This is hard stuff to talk about, but with Elle here, anything is possible. “What about your mother and father?”

“The funny thing is, my parents actually got their happily ever after. Not with each other, though. They were both deeply in love with Le Charme Jewelers. The name… the money… the glamour… they couldn’t get enough. My parents met as strangers and stayed that way.”

Elle frowns. “I don’t get it. If they cared that much about the company, then why is the company in such rough shape?”

“They treated Le Charme the way they treated themselves. As long as things looked right, they didn’t have to be right. Does that make sense?”

“It does. They just took out more loans and kept going.”

“My father always had these grand schemes, like building the L Center. Those weren’t real business opportunities that he mapped out and researched, though. He just thought it was fun to have a huge building named after you in the middle of Manhattan.” I shiver. “And everyone around them played by the same rules or they were fired. I was surrounded by a world of beautiful illusions… and I was the only one who saw the truth underneath.”

I take Elle’s hand in mine. “Then I saw you at the loading dock for the L Center. You were all things gorgeous and bright. That Rae light from your mother shone all around you.”

Elle blushes. “I was a sweaty mess dragging a broken wagon of knickknacks.”

I pull her closer on the bench, guiding her legs across my lap. “You were perfect in your imperfection. Same as when I saw you later on the security cameras, un-stealing jewelry from my office. For me, Le Charme is a responsibility… a broken machine that I inherited and must fix. I’d sell it off if I could, only there’s too much debt.”

“And too many dwarves.”

“Yes, I can never forget the dwarves. They’re my family.” I set my knuckle under her chin. “But you? You’re my dream. And not because you’ll magically make everything better, either. It’s more that I trust you to my marrow. You’ll fight at my side to make everything the best it can be.”

Elle blushes. “And I love you, too, Alec Le Charme.”

Fire And Cinder
Christina Bauer
(Fairy Tales of the Magicorum, #6)
Published by: Monster House Books
Publication date: February 23rd 2021
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Meet the Magicorum: modern folks who are supernaturally locked into fairy tale life templates. For eighteen-year-old Elle, that role is Cinderella. Meanwhile, Agatha is her evil stepsister. Things go downhill from there…

Cinderella On The Run

Elle—never call her Cinderella—has found the love of her life in Alec Le Charme, the prince of a jewelry dynasty. But when Alec gets spirited away, Elle must ditch her Manhattan home for the perilous Faerie Lands. To save Alec, Elle must also swap her glass slippers for a flying carpet. But will switching templates from Cinderella to Aladdin snap Elle’s sanity?

Whatever. Bring on the straight jacket. Elle is one Cinderella who’s determined to save her prince, no matter what.

Evil Stepsister or Elf Queen?

Agatha always accepted her role as Elle’s evil stepsister. Then her life template changes from nasty sibling to evil elf queen. Agatha has one thought on that score. Thanks but no thanks. Agatha refuses the regal life, even though stepping away from her crown means ignoring her lifelong attraction to the elf prince, Jacoby.

Then everything changes. Agatha discovers that Elle’s life is at risk… and the only way to save her Cinderella is by teaming up with Jacoby. Trouble is, that’s a lot of togetherness. Working with Jacoby could easily end in disaster, not only for Agatha’s heart, but also for Elle and Alec’s lives.
