“Mrs. Dowland, might we save the rest of the tour for another time? My wife and I are rather fatigued and wish to retire until dinner.”

“Of course, Captain. The master bedroom is just here.” She opened the door behind them onto a large bedchamber, the main component being a massive four-poster oak bed jutting majestically into the center of the room. The covers and bedcurtains were again in masculine colors of maroon and blue, and the walls papered in a dark floral paisley that Emma loved on sight. “I see Buckleigh and James have put your things there.” She motioned to their trunks. “I’ll make sure you are undisturbed until the dinner gong sounds. Do you prefer to dine at seven or eight o’clock?”

“Eight,” Alex replied quickly. “Thank you, Mrs. Dowland. You’ve been a great help. That will be all for now.”

“Very good, Captain.” With one last nod and a hint of a smile, Mrs. Dowland left, pulling the door closed.

“At last. I thought she’d never leave.” Alex turned to Emma, pulled her close, and sank his mouth down on hers.

When they finally came up for air, Emma’s head was whirling. “I thought you said we needed to rest.”

“I said we needed to retire.” He’d already begun pulling at his cravat, his gaze darkening when it fell on her. “Are you tired, my love?” Unbuttoning his jacket in record speed, Alex stripped it from his body and tossed it over his shoulder. “Do you need rest…or something else, perhaps?”

“B…but it’s still daylight.” She’d always assumed for some reason that marital relations were relegated to the hours of darkness, perhaps because they were too intimate to be done in the light of day. Maybe she’d been wrong about that.

“Were I an artist I’d insist on painting you just as you are, my dear.”

Honoria jumped and whirled around at the sound of Thomas’s voice, scattering some of her clippings as she turned. “Oh, you startled me, Thomas. I thought I was alone out here.”

“I didn’t find you in the house and somehow knew this was where you would be.” Her husband smiled that charming, lazy smile and her knees went weak. “Let me pick these up as I have been the cause for their fall.” Taking the basket from her, he stooped and carefully placed the stems back in her basket. As he picked up the Maiden’s Blush he chuckled softly, and Honoria’s cheeks flamed again. “These should make excellent displays.” He rose and handed her the basket. “You have quite a talent for arranging them.”

“Thank you.” Resisting the urge to fan herself, Honoria took the basket and sauntered to the nearest rose bush, which happened to be an exquisite deep pink Apothecary’s Rose. “Why were you looking for me? Ouch!” She’d grabbed the rose too hastily and a thorn bit deeply into her thumb. “That hurt.”

“Let me see.” Beside her in a moment, Thomas cupped her hand in his and turned it palm up. A large bead of dark red blood had welled up on the pad of her thumb. He brushed the drop away then raised her thumb to his lips and kissed it.

Honoria gasped as a streak of lightning seemed to race through her hand, up her arm and lodge itself at her innermost core. Dazed, she stared up into his dark brown eyes, filled with a longing she understood all too well.

EXCERPT:

“The men would stay here how long to hunt?” The primitive accommodations did not instill confidence in Jane. She’d likely not make it here a single night.

“According to my father, sometimes a week or more.”

Grimacing, Jane moved to the single door on the right. “What room is this?”

“That chamber is reserved for the Kinellan.” He opened the door and ushered her in.

Much larger than the other rooms, this one boasted a large double-sized poster bed with curtains around its four sides made of what was once costly blue brocade fabric, though now faded and dusty looking. At the time they were new they must have been quite elegant.  The walls of this chamber were not Spartan as the other rooms, but decorated with several sets of antlers, a portrait of some Seton ancestor she assumed, and an ancient broadsword hung beneath the Seton coat of arms. A chest on chest and a wardrobe gave the room an aura of sophistication after the other sparsely furnished rooms.

“I see the Kinellan likes his luxuries.” She ran her hand over the comforter and pressed down on the mattress, testing the bed. “Although this mattress is quite lumpy.”

“Really?” Kinellan suddenly loomed overtop of her and she caught her breath. “That could be unfortunate.”

“Unfortunate?” Her voice rose to a squeak as he tipped her head back and lowered his mouth to hers.

The insistence of his lips, the tension in his body, and the bulge in his buckskins all told of his desire.

So much the better.

“What speaks to you as you write a historical romance?”

Being a life-long lover of history and a history major as an undergraduate in college, I can assure you that history has always spoken to me in a very intimate way. I’ve always been fascinated by various time periods and especially how people lived during eras that were much different from my own.

This sensibility certainly carries over into my work as I pen historical romances in a variety of periods. So one of the biggest things that speaks to me while writing is the time period itself. I’m curious about all kinds of things: distances a carriage can travel in a day, how a lady’s maid dressed, what kinds of carriages were available, what did dueling pistols look like. I have a voracious hunger to get all the details in my novels as historically correct as I possibly can, and so I delve into research with both feet, sometimes taking huge amounts of time to track down one tiny piece of minutiae that I believe the necessary to build the historical world of my novel.

What also often speaks to me are the characters themselves—sometimes in very literal ways. They really do have voices that I can hear in my head (I hope that doesn’t sound psychotic) and I usually listen to them because, after all, this is their story. Once I needed a name for a very minor character—a previous suitor of the heroine. That’s all. And out of nowhere a voice whispered, “Amiable.” I’d never heard that word used as a name before, but suddenly, with that whispered name, the character sprang to life for me. He went on to have his own very successful romance in that same series. So now I do tend to listen when characters speak to me.

EXCERPT:

Throwing up his hands, he groaned and sagged against the wall, his banyan sliding half off him. “Have your way with me, woman. I surrender myself into your hands. Do with me what you will and I swear I will enjoy it.”

Panting, she stepped back from him, seeing the sculpted muscular form, strong arms, and dark eyes glazed with smoldering desire as if for the first time. This man wanted her, or had wanted her to be his wife for a long time. No one would ever make her feel this way again, mo matter how many lovers she might take. She could look for the rest of her life and not find a man as kind or generous or loving as he. And she had all but thrown his love away with both hands. The revelation devastated her and she hung her head.

“Jane?” Kinellan straightened, peering into her face.

Sobbing, she threw her arms around him, laying her head on his broad chest, the only place she wanted it to be. Tears pricked her eyes. The fast beat of his heart beneath her ear should have given comfort, but did not, for her own heart was tearing asunder. The trickle of tears became a flood.

“Darling.” He slipped his arms around her, cradling her close. “What is wrong?”

“I…I don’t want to leave.”

“Sweetheart.” He cupped her chin and turned her face up to his. A thundery frown marred his brow. “Who has asked you to leave? Was it Aunt Prudence? Fiona?”

“N…no.” Jane sniffed, trying to blink back the tears and regain her composure.

“Someone else?” His frown grew darker.

She nodded. “You.”
