A young widow discovering how to live again and her single dad best friend who’s by her side the entire time.

I had a perfect life. Schoolteacher. Married to my high school sweetheart. Little starter house that we called charming but was really just old. All I needed was the two-point-five kids and I’d be living my perfect dream. Then my husband died.

After the funeral, I had a breakdown that lasted for a month…or twelve. But now I’m reemerging, healing, finding my way. It’s time to learn who I am now, and whether or not I can fix a leaky sink. And by my side, the entire time, is my husband’s best friend, Liam. The single dad knows a thing or two about personal struggles, and about how to replace faucets.

With Liam, I feel alive again. Confident. Capable. Liam has become my best friend too. Except if my parents, my in-laws, and the rest of the town had any say, I’d stay far away from him and his bad boy reputation.

How do I admit to them what’s so hard to admit to myself? That I’m starting to look at him like he’s more than a friend. That the heat in his eyes when he looks at me is far beyond friendly. That like it or not, Liam makes me feel whole again.

But when my ex-fiancĂ© comes to town to woo me back and Ford’s ex-fiancĂ©e claims he’s a poor role model for his son, Ford has an idea. An idea so crazy it might just work to get both our exes off our backs.

***

Fake dating the only woman who can resist my charms shouldn’t have backfired. But I’ve spent more than a year trying to pretend Lia Wescott isn’t the sexiest, smartest woman I’ve ever met. It’s not long before working together isn’t enough and we’re no longer pretending to date—we’re doing the real thing.

I’m getting the life back that was taken away years ago and enjoying time with my new girlfriend and my son. Until my ex drops a worst case scenario on me, and I’m suddenly faced with choosing between the two most important people in my life.

Excerpt:

A lumpy bundle in the ditch captured her attention. Patience was past it before she braked. Frowning, she peered in the rearview mirror and waited for the dust cloud to settle.

Still there.

What was it? Too large to be a dog. Maybe a bear? A garbage bag? It wouldn’t be the first time some idiot tried getting rid of their trash on the side of a rural road.

Squinting, she couldn’t make out what it was, but she swore part of the blue appeared to be denim material.

No. It couldn’t be a person.

Looking around, she couldn’t see a motorcycle or anything that suggested an automobile wreckage of any sort.

She ran her tongue along her teeth. Good thing she fueled up. Someone had to check this lump out.

She stepped out of her car and blinked in the sunlight. It was a cool day, typical for late spring. Dirty snow was still piled in the ditches, but it’d been a mild winter, and whatever the bundle was hadn’t landed in more than dried grasses.

“Hello?”
She inched closer to the edge of the road. If it was garbage, please be old rags. Something that didn’t ooze. Picking up other people’s trash was full of icky surprises.

The lump didn’t move.

“Garbage dumpers,” she muttered and crept closer. A mop of rich brown hair caught her gaze.

The pile wasn’t small. And it had hair.

Her heart rate kicked up. A person. But there was no vehicle around. Was he dumped?

She knew it was a he because of the size. Not that women couldn’t be that big. But this was definitely a guy. Because the more she studied him, the better able she could
make out that he was on his side and had incredibly broad shoulders.

“Excuse me?” she said, sounding more timid than she cared to.

No movement.

“Sir?” She took a step closer.

No response.

She closed the distance between them and stood over him. His shoulders moved in time with his steady breathing. Good, he was alive at least. Before she could wonder about her personal safety, she crouched as far away as possible but close enough to reach out and nudge one heavily muscled arm. “Hey?”
Nothing.

Circling him, she had a dying need to know what he looked like. If she was getting taken down by a stranger, she wanted to see his face.

Admittedly, this stranger didn’t seem like he’d attack anyone any time soon.

A leather coat flap obscured his face. Since he was breathing, she pushed him to his back. A normal person would call an ambulance, but there was no way she’d risk
that. With her luck, Damian would be on duty, and she couldn’t risk running across him. The restraining order had expired and he hadn’t bothered her—yet.

The man groaned as he settled on his back.

Her lips parted. He was a mess. But he was a hot
mess. Bits of grass mixed with rich brown strands. A neatly trimmed beard framed his chiseled face. Everything about him screamed strength and power.
Quite a feat for an unconscious man. She didn’t have to move his jacket and shirt around to know that he had a great body.

But she had no wish to touch his shirt. Blood was spattered across it. She couldn’t see any open wounds. Not his blood? Her gaze swept his long body. No major injuries
other than bloody knuckles.

Her jaw tightened. He was in a fight before he ended up here. Self-defense? Or was he a mean bastard?

“What’s your story?”

About Red Hot Rancher:

Full-time fireman and part-time rancher Caleb is living the bachelor’s dream and staying rent-free in his best friend’s place. Too bad it’s because he lost his house to a tornado and his best friend’s sister is the one that got away. At least she doesn’t visit often—the last thing he needs is to show her she was right about him: he’s going nowhere fast. At least it’s only a matter of time before she’s gone again. After all, there’s nothing in this town for her but bullies and cow patties…except a fireman in cowboy boots who melts her heart and makes her consider love again.

Excerpt:

Lobbing the hand towel toward the laundry bin, she turned. Her breath caught.
Whatever she’d thought about a shirtless Caleb didn’t come close to the real thing.
He was stopped in the hallway, like he’d seen her crouched in nothing but a towel and gotten glued to the spot. A matching gray towel was slung low over his waist, the rest of his lean body bare.
And wow.
Defined pecs. Rippling abs she wanted to gaze at as much as she wanted to trace with her tongue. There was nothing relaxed about him. This wasn’t the usual Caleb.
Because they were both wearing only a towel. Her gaze flew to his face, but his was stuck on the flare of her hips. His jaw tightened until she thought he’d bust teeth. He finally noticed her looking at him.
“Sorry.” He stiffly turned his head, like he’d defaulted to robot mode.
“Yeah.” She wasn’t sorry. There wasn’t any more chance she and Caleb would work than there had been ten years ago. Might as well torture herself with what she was missing. That view was worth it.
She took a step, her heel hitting a patch that hadn’t completely dried, which had turned into an ice rink for the unwary. The skid of her foot on the ceramic tile was louder than her startled cry. Her biggest worry wasn’t that she’d hurt herself. It was that she’d crash to the ground and lose her towel, or land with her legs splayed in the unsexiest peep show to ever hit Moore, Minnesota.
Her other foot hit with a thud and she caught herself. The pounding of her heart clogged her throat and she put a hand to her chest.
Caleb was at her side, a sexy safety net she would’ve gratefully fallen into. “Are you all right?” His hot hand was on her elbow. He was only inches away from her.
“You move fast.” She blinked and tried to lift her gaze to his face, but it was glued to the way his muscles flowed from his shoulders to his chest.
He dropped his voice. “Not when it counts, honey.”
He’d meant it as a joke, she knew that. But the timbre of his drawl and the proximity of his nearly naked body belied the humor. She couldn’t get past her raw need. How did the adult Caleb feel? Would he still like when she nibbled along his jawline to his earlobe? Would he groan every time she stroked his length?
She swallowed hard. Somehow, he’d crowded closer. Or had she drawn nearer?
Who cared?
“Bridge.” His voice matched the raging hormones inside of hers, the ones demanding answers to her questions.
She lifted her chin and kissed the corner of his mouth and pulled back only slightly. “Caleb.”
“We shouldn’t—”
“I know.” She planted her lips on his.

Excerpt:

“What do all the vamps call you?” Her purr was too close to his ear. “Q?”
He jerked his head up. She was leaning over, her gaze dropping to the tome he was reading and back up to his eyes.
“Yes. Sometimes.” His brother especially. He fought the urge to tell her more. Was that one of her powers? Or just the allure of a beautiful demon?
Funny, he’d thought that with all his studies, he’d fall for a human. A vampire at the very least. Why a demon?
On the desk, she was positioned higher than him, her breasts dangerously at eye level. He forced his gaze to stay up.
She cocked her head and arched a black brow. “Whatcha reading, Q?” Her gaze brushed the page, but a small frown marred her lush lips.
He studied her closely. Not a hardship, but he had to know if she could understand what was on the page.
She couldn’t. Her expression remained blank, though, with a hint of frustration. Since she’d rattled off titles absent from his library, he guessed she couldn’t read many languages, if any at all. Not many demons could. Why educate a population you want to control? had been the former Circle’s attitude.
He wouldn’t be able to read, either, except that having been imprisoned with his mother for much of his early life, he’d learned to pass the time. “I’m catching up on Albrecht DĂĽrer’s theories for the geometrical construction of complex polyhedra.” Watching her reaction, he waited for her to call bullshit.
“Why would you read that?” She brushed a long finger over the page. Was that reverence in her eyes?
Ah. She wanted to know how to read.
He regretted his words before he said them, but they were necessary. “To keep my mind sharp. You should try it sometime.”
She stiffened and slid off the table. “My mind is as sharp as my claws, demon.”
His gaze touched on where her round, muscular ass had been. What he wouldn’t give for just one chance to ogle her properly. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
Two main reasons. He’d seen firsthand what unwanted male attention did to a female. And he’d also seen the atrocious fallout of a male trying to pull off full-blooded status and what it had done to him and his mate—and their young.
Xan wasn’t staying away from him no matter how much he tried to evade her, so he’d have to stoop to insults. Because if she was even a little bit receptive to his lack of charm, he might be willing to throw his life’s plans away.
