About the Book:

Liam Wolfson, the professional assassin, is dead. His new persona, Jack Hammerson, lives in a small town in Colorado, happy helping out as many of the townsfolk as he can. It’s his way of working toward some kind of redemption for his sins. Until one night when an amnesiac woman falls into his arms, calling out his old name...

Kara remembers nothing about her previous life, only brief glimpses of an old lover and their time together... but she knows her fate is entwined with Liam's. Then there’s the familiarity with all things Valkyrie and Valhalla. She worries she might be going crazy.

Liam has worked hard to hide all traces of his old life but Kara rips old wounds open as their old feelings for each other come rushing back. But it's not just Kara who's come to town looking for answers. When mercenaries arrive looking for Liam, he’ll need Kara to remember what she’s capable of if either of them is going to survive...

Excerpt:

Kara slid her tongue over her lips, an innocent move that shot straight to his groin. It was hard not to flash back to seeing her naked this morning in his bed then go back further, to their week in Vegas. For the first time since arriving in the Ridge, he felt alive.

She might be trouble, but sometimes trouble was just what you needed.
Geraldine Hamilton, the town librarian, knew Liam well—he’d been in and out at least once a week to help shelve books and move heavy boxes the elderly woman couldn’t handle. She peered over her glasses at the pair as they approached.

“This is Kara,” he said before she launched herself into a gentle interrogation. “Just visiting. We’re going to look over the travel books.”

Before she replied, Liam had taken Kara’s arm and maneuvered her over to the geography section of the library, where a giant globe sat atop the shelves.

“She’s a sweet lady, but she loves to talk. We’ll never get anything done if she corners us. Don’t worry—Marie will fill her in on our backstory soon enough. If someone mentions seeing you, she’ll let us know.” He patted the back of a wooden chair. “Have a seat and relax. I’ll grab some travel picture books and you can page through them, see if anything triggers.”

There was no one else in the library, making it easy for him to go from aisle to aisle and select a collection of books dealing with North America. It was a start.

He grabbed a thin book about Las Vegas, adding it to the stack. If he could figure out where she came from, it’d make it easier to see where she fit into his life.

And then what?

The question echoed through his mind as he strode back to the table.

The empty table.

Liam laid the stack down, resisting the urge to run through the library looking for her. The chair sat upright, pushed back.

He headed for the front desk, ready for a quick interrogation with Geraldine to see if she’d seen where Kara had gone and if she’d been with anyone.

The front desk was empty.

Fear crept along his spine, the icy tentacles wrapping around his heart. His right hand slipped around to the pistol at the small of his back.

If someone had taken them both…

A high-pitched twitter had him spinning around, relief tamping down the anxiety. Geraldine’s laugh was a distinctive sound, not likely given in a hostage situation.

But still…

He crept along the edges of the bookshelves until he had a clear view of the children’s area.

The two women sat at a small table. The white-haired librarian flipped through a book before turning it around to show Kara. A quick sweep of the room showed it to be empty except for the pair, easing the last of his worries. He turned his attention to the women.

Kara was…

Smiling. Laughing.

A bit of the heaviness lifted from his heart at seeing her like this, a part of her inner nature set free. It looked good on her, and he liked it.

She clapped her hands together as Liam approached from behind. “It’s so beautiful…”

Liam stopped and glanced over her shoulder at the children’s book spread out on the table.

Geraldine turned and smiled. “Jack. Your friend here was telling me about Valhalla.”

A throbbing erupted behind one eye as he gazed down at the book, spotting the title.

Viking Myth and Legends.

The brightly-colored images showed a variety of people and creatures, most of which he recognized from his own childhood, tales recited by his father and grandfather.

His heart raced as he saw the two women focus on the image of an armored woman, multicolored wings spread wide as she flew over a battlefield.

A Valkyrie.

He tried to tamp down the fear rising in his gut, the bile choking the words from his throat.

No.

HARD PLAY
by Sheryl Nantus
Delta Force Brotherhood, #1
Publication Date: February 20, 2017
Genres: Adult, Entangled: Select, Contemporary Romance
Rating:  4.5 Stars

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from IndieSage PR and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising"

SYNOPSIS:

Ex-special forces ranger Dylan McCourt is a stone cold killer who cares only about his military brothers and doing what’s right. He’s used to giving orders and has zero patience for bullshit. Most people tremble when they look him in the eye, but not his infuriatingly sexy new rescue mission, Jessie Lyon. She just juts her chin and says she’s not leaving without clearing her father’s name, to hell with his rules. And was that a one finger salute he sees in her eyes or his imagination? Either way, he knows this is one job his training might not have prepared him for.

For fans of Maya Banks’ KGI series, prepare to meet the men of the Delta Force Brotherhood, a sexy new contemporary series where kicking ass and living hard is just how they roll.

My Thoughts:

Dylan McCourt is in charge of his domain.  And he’s a man of many talents.  Jessica “Jessie” Lyon is in a real pickle and she needs Dylan’s level of expertise to keep her safe.  It has plenty of action, suspense, twists and turns to keep you riveted from beginning to end.  This also shows how fast our lives can change.  I was impressed that Jessie didn’t let her situation get her down.  She used it to her advantage.

Ms. Nantus has created two main characters with strong personalities.  This can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing.  It’s one that you will go back and forth on from beginning to end.  But one thing I loved was how she made an alpha male willing to open himself to possibilities.  But just like most males, he thinks he knows what’s best for the woman – some men never learn.

Many years ago, I had the chance to go to Atlantic City.  Went to one of the many casinos and it taught me two things.  First, I’m not much of a gambler.  Two, I know where all the losers go while waiting for the bus to take them back to their hotel.  This book would have made my wait so much more enjoyable.

As I was reading, it had me reminiscing about some of my favorite old shows – this would fit in perfectly.  The author does such a great job of creating her scenes that you’ll have no trouble seeing the story play out in your mind.  It’s a story of patience.  Nothing is revealed too soon which kicks up the suspense.  We all love our happy ending and you kinda get one here.  But it also gets you ready for the next book, which I was happy to see.  If this series were to come out on television, I would be a loyal fan.  This just means that I will have to continue to read each book as they come out.

EXCERPT:

Jessie swung at him with her right fist, a move easily blocked with his left hand. Instinctively Dylan stepped in and spun behind her, trapping Jessie against his chest. Her arms were pinned and she struggled to break free.
“Look,” he said in her ear, trying hard not to be aroused by her movements as she wriggled again, thrusting her hips back. “I get you want revenge. I get—”
He gasped as her elbow drove home into his ribs. Dylan released her with a grunt, pushing her away.
Jessie moved into a fighting crouch, gasping for air.
She was tough, he’d give her that.
But he wasn’t going to give in to her demands.
At least, not easily.
“You’re not in any shape to be trying this.” Dylan tried not to stare at her mouth, the flushed skin adding to his desire. “You should be in bed.”
He flinched inside at the double entendre.
Jessie raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Make me.”
Dylan pulled up, unsure what he’d heard.
Take me?
Make me?
She feinted to the side with a low laugh and he grinned, feeling the hot flash of adrenaline race through his body.
“Show me what you’ve got,” Jessie said. “I can take it.”
“We’ll see about that.” Dylan went at her with a roar, taking her to the ground with a measured fall.
Despite her week’s incarceration, she proved a tough opponent, sliding free of Dylan’s hands more than once as they grappled on the carpet.
He was surprised at her strength, her ability to hold her own. The simple twists and grips he’d started out with to test her skills had shifted to tougher, harder holds as she continued to press on.
He’d made a mistake, underestimated her recovery rate. She wasn’t just keeping up with him, there was a distinct possibility she was going to beat him.
That wasn’t acceptable.
He went at her, put her down on the carpet and pinned her there on her back, her right arm stretched and in danger of being hyperextended. Her gasp made him wince, knowing he was hurting her.
He didn’t want to. But he couldn’t let her think she was going to waltz into the line of fire with a kiss and a swish of her hips.
“Fuck.” The word came out through gritted teeth as she struggled to pull her arm free.
“Tap out,” Dylan said. “Just tap…”
She rolled and slipped away, landing a punch to his thigh in retaliation, dangerously close to his groin.
Jessie got up, shaking her right hand.
“That’s enough.” He stood up. “You’re good, but I can’t…”
She bent over and rushed him, knocking the air from his lungs as they fell together to the carpet.
“I’m more than good enough.” She glared at him. “I’m better.”
He didn’t hesitate now, gripping her hips and flipping her over. Dylan straddled her, pinning her hands at her sides.
“All right. All right. Now let’s stop this before one of us…” He swore as she wrenched ...
