Excerpt:

PROLOGUE

“The scales of battle turned. But until then, they attacked each other,
fighting furiously in fierce combat.” ~ Hesiod Theogony.

Francis Marion National Forest; Charleston, SC

Evening, mortal realm

“Etimos.” Hades whispered the word to signify his readiness as he watched the battle below from a hill in the forest. He knew the outcome as he had foreseen it. The winning team was required to make a sacrifice in his honor. He recognized his sibling’s signature before he made his appearance.

“Brother.” Hades turned his head in greeting.

Zeus slapped him on the back. “Not bad seating.”

“If you could call standing in the forest a good view.”

“Cheer up, Hades. You know we both enjoy a splendid victory.” Zeus gave him another clap between his shoulder blades.

Everyone thought the all-seeing Zeus was serious, but Hades knew better. His sibling could be quite the jokester, and his humor transcended to the mortal realm where he had forbidden any of the gods and goddesses to frolic and intervene. Save for when Zeus, the most powerful of gods, had the urge to shift the balance. His granddaughter, Carissa Alkippes, triggered events that brought Zeus on high alert for a prophecy that had been all but forgotten for two millennia. Everything that had transpired recently only confirmed that Carissa and the vampire Xen Lyson, who she was engaged to, would both be instrumental in how everything would play out.

“I take it you are going to lend some power in this war.”

“I don’t think it’s necessary. We both know who is going to win.”

Two factions of demons were already in the heat of battle. The eudemonia and kakodaimones were once one entity that walked the earth and spread fortune to those worthy and misfortune to those who were not. When it all ended, the earth opened and swallowed them into the underworld. There they were split in two segregated groups. They battled for many millennia until a few centuries ago when Lox, the leader of the eudemonia, worked on a way to break the curse that kept them bound to the underworld. Now they fought in the mortal realm and Zeus, the god of thunder and storms, wanted to see it for himself.

“Watch closely, Brother, for in the fray of battle important details are often missed.”

Hades turned his gaze toward the skirmish. The perk of being a god meant you could zoom your view in from any location. He focused on the perimeter where the kakodaimones stood ready to fight the oncoming onslaught of the eudemonia. His head followed the lines of men, and just at the fringes, he caught something. A portal. Demons exited by the dozen into the mortal realm. “Are you seeing this?”

“Crystal clear color,” Zeus answered.

“We know how this ends. You can stay and view the rest, but I need to close that portal for Hekate.” Hades turned to his brother, eyes burning like torches. He tilted his head and dematerialized.

***

Zeus watched from his position. He wanted to witness this small victory for the eudemonia. Long ago it wasn’t only their name that stood for happiness, they were the givers of happiness, and that had allowed humans to flourish and prosper.

His chess pieces were in place. One more action was required to be taken after the battle ended. He watched Lox carve his way through the kakodaimones. Hades had done the eudemonia a favor by removing the glamour that made the kakodaimones look like ghastly reptiles when they stepped from the underworld to the human realm. Their sulphury odor permeated the air. Without their glamour they no longer looked identical. Zeus saw Lox lock into the leader and head straight for him. His men were well-oiled killing machines, and Zeus needed to make sure his granddaughter, Carissa, had these men on her side.

The eudemonia cut their opposition down without raising a sweat. It appeared the skirmishes they fought before freeing themselves were a test of endurance and skill.

There was only one more thing Zeus needed to see and that was the fulfilment of the okros Lox had sworn to Hades.

He watched as they prepared the sacrifice with a temporary altar. A sheep was dragged along for the offering.

Zeus transformed himself to a mist and surrounded the site where the oath would be sworn.

Lox stepped forward with a knife in hand. “I swear to Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Demeter and the Styx that I will ally myself and my men to the Phi Athanatoi and Carissa, the daughter of Ares. I have sworn this to Hades.”

The knife slit the throat of the sheep and blood was gathered in a vessel. “Whoever is to do wrong by this oath, let their blood flow to the ground like this wine.” He poured wine to the ground.

All the necessary libations were poured, and prayers were said.

Satisfied by the sworn okros, Zeus dematerialized back to Olympus. The drama had commenced, and he would watch it unfold from the comfort of his throne.

I’M FALLING IN LOVE WITH A DEMON, BUT IS MY SOUL WORTH THE RISK?

I’ve never worn clothes, held a fork, or made a decision. When my old master dies, I’m put up for auction and sold to the highest bidder. I expected my life to continue as it had always been—kneeling at my master’s feet. Instead, I’m told I’m now free.

When I dig deep and discover the well of my own power, I have a burning desire for something more than freedom--I want Vartan. I’m going to do whatever it takes to seize my new dream.

 Excerpt:

Gladiator Vartan and human Lyra’s relationship has hit some snags. Lyra was born in space and raised as a pet. Vartan and Lyra’s first sexual explorations were awkward to say the least and resulted in the captain of the ship prohibiting them from touching for a while. Vartan’s friend Shadow has come to his room to give some pointers.

***
Vartan

“How are things going?” Shadow asks after he enters my cabin.

“I’ve been working in the hydroponics—”

“I should have been more clear. How are things going with you and Lyra?”

“These last few weeks have been good. I’ve taught her some things in hydroponics. Dahlia says she’s already reading at the first-grade level, whatever that means. Dahlia seems pleased, and Lyra is ecstatic. She’s learned how to—”

“Stop! Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. I’ve watched you two together. You have feelings for each other. Zar’s touching prohibition? How is that going?”

“Are you checking up on me? Wondering if I’ve broken the rule? I respect Zar and every male and female on this ship too much to violate their trust.” I try to stifle my outrage at his suggestion that I’ve cheated.

“Sorry, that came out fucked up. I love that Earther curse word. Eventually, you’re going to be allowed to touch again. It didn’t sound like it went so well last time. Want some pointers?”

My jaw locks and I give him a flaming look. From one gladiator to another, it’s a clear message to back the drack up or prepare to get pounded.

I hear he doesn’t fight in arenas anymore, perhaps that’s why he plunges ahead rather than shutting the fuck up as he would say. Perhaps he’s itching for a fight.

“All I’m saying, Vartan, is that when you touch her, it should shake her world. My mate, Petra, told me Lyra didn’t know what an orgasm was.” He lifts an eyebrow. “After one night with you, virgin or not, she should. She should know. Have you ever been with a female who wasn’t paid for?”

“No.” My fists ball at my sides and I use every ounce of self-control I have not to headbutt him. If I wasn’t already in so much trouble, I’d pound him to the floor right now.

My jaw is quivering in rage when Shadow says, “I was a playboy before I was forced into slavery. I know tricks. With a female like Lyra, you won’t need tricks, Vartan. Just information. She looks at you like you dusted the sky with stars.”

I take long, deep breaths through my nose, calming myself enough to realize I have a lot to learn and Shadow just might be the male to teach me.

My pride was feeling a bit bruised, but that last bit about how Lyra looks at me helped me feel less judged.

He opens his fisted hand and lets a rare barta fruit roll onto the table.

“Watch the master,” he says with a devilish smile as he pulls a small knife from its hiding place in his knee-high black boot.

After cutting it and pulling the two halves apart, he discards the oval pit which reveals glistening pink flesh. “Imagine this is your female’s xizca.”

My irritation disappears one minima later after he gives me a guided tour of the private space between a female’s legs using the fruit as a visual demonstration.

“I know what it’s like to be given a female for a few minimas after a win. A male can be so starved for sex and in such a hurry, the last thing on his mind is an anatomy lesson—or his partner’s pleasure. And prostitutes? You’re paying for it. Their enjoyment should be of no concern to you.”

He winks at me, which is an odd picture since one of his eyes is prosthetic. “Lyra’s different, brother. Right?”

“Absolutely,” I agree, then lean closer to watch what he does with his tongue, his lips, his mouth, and his chin.

“You try it,” Shadow indicates the other half of the barta with his juice-covered chin, then instructs me on the finer points of when to point my tongue, when to use the flat of it, when to press harder, and when to give her a minima to breathe. He teaches me to listen to her body, to observe subtle cues like the noises she makes or the tension in her muscles.

“She’ll like this?” I lift the ripe pink fruit toward him.

“It’s your job to not only make her like this. You need to make her love it. No. Not love it, become addicted to it. Do it right and your female will beg for it, or if she’s like my Petra, she’ll demand it. And if your female deserves you, she’ll reward you in a thousand wonderful ways.”

His eyebrow wings up toward his hairline in a lascivious gesture shared only with other males.

“A good female like Lyra will try to push you away. She’ll be embarrassed. That’s why it’s your job to act as if you’ve done this a hundred times. Only when you’re done—and by done I mean she’s screamed with pleasure at least three times—should you say anything about how she looks down there. She’ll be shy and unsure. When you do say something, be sure and express how pretty she is, and that she tastes better than Paragon cake. Got it?”

“Got it? Are you crazy? I’m committing everything you say to memory.”

“Good male! Later in your relationship you can sometimes skip the barta-eating step, but not until you’ve mastered what comes later in the program.”

“And that is?”

“One step at a time, brother.” He takes a bite out of his half of the barta and strides out of my cabin after tossing a wicked grin over his shoulder.

About the Author:

I write under a pen name because until recently I was still a practicing psychotherapist and didn’t think my clients would want to be privy to the sexy stories I write for fun. I think my history as a therapist gives me unique insight into people’s thoughts, feelings and motivations and provides my writing the ring of truth and deep emotion.

I’ve specialized in working with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder since the beginning of my career. Maybe this is why most of my characters have some…issues. Don’t we all? Even though many of my characters have been scarred and traumatized, I make them work hard to earn their happily ever after, which is guaranteed in every book––because they deserve it.

I know life is hard and the path to true love is littered with potholes and poor choices. That’s why it’s easy to write books with real themes about real people who encounter real difficulties before the characters find their well-deserved bliss. I guarantee no “too stupid to live” heroines and no ridiculous misunderstandings. My characters’ struggles are real and compelling—just like yours.

 Excerpt:

“These are actually pretty good for a whore.” He chews it down before nudging Grant. “I wonder if her blowjobs are as good as her baking.”

Grant smirks, leering at my mouth. “With lips like that, I bet she could suck a lollipop right off its stick.”

“Fuck you!” I growl, causing them to, “Ooooo,” back at me.

“Does your stepdad kiss that mouth of yours?” Grant asks, his sneer menacing.

I thought Brad had reined these fuckers in. I’m guessing that because he’s not around now, the last few weeks of not being able to taunt and tease me is coming out of them by the bucket load.

“I think he kisses something else of hers,” Tony jokes, causing them to high-five each other as they laugh.

“Is that true, whore?” Grant continues. “Does your stepdad kiss that pink, little pussy of yours?”

Eyes narrowing, I lean over the table so he can get a good view of my cleavage. Like the perverts that they both are, they lean in too. “Every fucking night. It’s so good that my orgasms make me pass out. I bet you can’t make a girl pass out with an orgasm, can you, dickhead? I bet you can’t make a girl orgasm at all.”

Emily Buchanan has always dealt with ghosts at Eternal Rest Bed and Breakfast—after all, it is next to the town’s historic cemetery. When paranormal activity begins to escalate, though, she knows that someone—or something—is desperately trying to communicate. When a body is discovered in a shallow grave, an old town scandal is resurrected, and Emily knows she has to find out what happened if her guests and her ghosts are ever going to get a good night’s sleep.

SWEET DREAMS, the first full-length novel in the new Eternal Rest Bed and Breakfast paranormal cozy mysteries by Beth Dolgner. Set in the rural North Georgia town of Oak Hill, where antiques shopping is a lot more common than murder, Emily Buchanan runs Eternal Rest Bed and Breakfast in a Victorian house built right next to a cemetery. Emily teams up with her best friend and psychic medium Sage Clark and the ghosts of Eternal Rest to solve murders. The only mystery Emily can't solve is why her late husband's spirit seems to be trapped between this world and the next.

Excerpt:

Emily balanced the tray in one hand as she put the other against the dining room door. Before she could push it open, she heard a gasp and a woman’s nervous giggle. Smiling, Emily glanced at the chocolate chip cookies piled on the tray. They were fresh out of the oven, but they could wait. Whether or not something paranormal was happening in the dining room, she didn’t want to break her guests’ concentration.

Sage’s low, sonorous voice drifted into the hallway as Emily turned and walked quietly back to the kitchen. On the rare occasions there was an extra place at the table, Emily would join in the monthly séance. As usual, though, the Spirited Saturday Night package at Eternal Rest Bed and Breakfast was sold out. People came from all over the country for the chance to spend the weekend with ghosts.

Emily put the tray down on the small wooden table shoved into one corner of the kitchen. All of the appliances were modern, but this little table was an antique that had been in the house for decades. She sat down with a satisfied sigh, then shrugged and picked up a cookie. Someone should enjoy them while they’re warm, she thought. Emily stretched her legs out in front of her and kicked off her shoes. A quiet moment like this was rare on these weekends. Spirited Saturday Night guests started arriving at lunchtime on Friday and stayed through Sunday morning. On Friday night, Emily would host a welcome reception, where the guests drank cocktails with spooky names and listened to Emily’s stories about the Victorian house’s history as a home to both the living and the dead. Emily’s best friend, Sage Clark, took over on Saturday night, treating everyone to a séance. Sometimes there wasn’t much paranormal activity, but there was always something. Emily had been skeptical about psychics when she first met Sage, but after years of seeing her in action, Emily was a believer—in Sage’s abilities, at least. She still inwardly scoffed at some of the ridiculous claims made by other psychic mediums who came to stay at Eternal Rest.

With a sigh, Emily wiped a few crumbs from her lips and stood up. If she got the coffee maker ready to go for tomorrow, then she could simply flip the switch in the morning to get it going in time for breakfast. The dishwasher needed to be unloaded, too, and the garbage was full. And when she took the garbage bag out to the bin, Emily could grab the watering can and get the plants watered while she was out there. It had been an unusually warm day for this early in March.

Emily allowed herself a few moments of self-pity while she slipped on her shoes again. Running a bed and breakfast in this house had always been her dream. Doing it all by herself had never been part of the plan.

About half an hour later, just as Emily had relaxed into the kitchen chair again, she heard the dining room door squeak open and footsteps in the hallway. When she went out to greet her guests, everyone was smiling.

“You should have been there!” exclaimed one of the men. “There were knocking noises!”

Emily smiled and offered her best effort at surprise. “That’s fantastic!”

“It was so exciting,” added his wife. “And Sage, oh, what a talented medium she is. You, my dear, have a very crowded house, even if you can’t see most of the inhabitants!”

Emily glanced past the guests to catch Sage’s eye, and they exchanged gratified smiles. A successful séance always meant good reviews on the online travel sites, and it oftentimes meant guests would come back again to experience more. After staying in a haunted bed and breakfast, going back to staying in ordinary hotels was just too boring for some people.

The four couples drifted up the stairs to their rooms, calling good night to Emily and Sage while still giggling and talking with each other.

“They were easily impressed,” Emily said quietly once the final set of feet had reached the second-floor landing.

“People usually are,” Sage agreed. “For people who don’t normally witness any kind of paranormal activity, even the smallest thing is thrilling.” Sage was still smiling, dimples showing in her round face. She absent-mindedly fingered the ankh pendant hanging around her neck, and her eyelids drooped. Her eyes seemed to be fixed on a spot on the wall, but Emily knew it was the face Sage made when she was trying to channel a message from a spirit.

“You made cookies,” Sage said abruptly.

“Did a spirit just bother to show up and tell you that?”

Sage laughed. “I could smell them earlier. I hope you didn’t eat them all yourself.”

“Come on; they’re in the kitchen.” Emily led her back there, gesturing to the table while she automatically pulled a bottle of cabernet off the white granite countertop. As she poured, she cleared her throat. “So, did he come by tonight?” She tried to make it sound casual, as always, but it still sounded desperate to her ears.

“Em, honey, you know he didn’t.” Even with her back to Sage, Emily could tell her friend’s smile was gone. “If Scott ever showed up, I would tell you immediately.”

“I know.” Emily jammed the cork back into the bottle and carried the two glasses over to the table. “And you know I have to ask.”

Sage picked up her glass and raised it in a toast. “Your husband loved you, and you loved him. I doubt he had any unfinished business. I say this to you every month, but there is no reason for his spirit to still be on this plane. But, like every month, here’s to his memory.” Sage clinked her glass against Emily’s.

After taking a long sip, the edges of Sage’s mouth turned up again. “Mrs. Thompson stopped by tonight. Bless her heart, she refuses to accept the fact that she’s dead. She thinks she still works for you.”

“I wish I had the ability to communicate with spirits like you. Mrs. Thompson always had the best town gossip to share. I bet she has even more now that she’s a ghost and can eavesdrop on everyone.” Emily had been fond of the elderly woman, a retired widow who had come to work at Eternal Rest two days a week, which gave Emily the chance to run errands and occasionally meet up with friends. “She’s been gone for five months already. I wonder when she’ll finally cross over.”

“I gave her a little prod in the right direction, but it might take her a while to get there. She was a stubborn old lady.”

“Sage!”

“Oh, I’m not disrespecting the dead. It’s just the truth.” Sage pointed toward the ceiling, as if Mrs. Thompson was hovering above them. “She knows what I think. I told her so when she was alive, and I told her again tonight.”

The two women chatted until their wine glasses were empty. Sage covered her mouth as she yawned. “Wow, the spirits took it out of me tonight. Time to head home. I’ll see you tomorrow afternoon for coffee, right?”

Emily gave a mock salute as she rose. “I’ll be there.”

It was still a comfortable temperature outside. As Emily walked Sage across the front porch, which spanned the entire width of the house, a soft breeze promised that spring was on the way. Emily took a deep breath, smelling the dogwood blossoms that were just appearing on the trees that flanked the brick stairs leading up to the porch. The white flowers always looked so pretty against the dark-blue exterior of the house. Sage paused suddenly and turned to her left, looking in the direction of the cemetery that sat next to the house. The golden glow of the porch light made it impossible to see the cemetery in the darkness beyond, but its invisible presence could still be felt.

Sage was motionless for a long time, her eyes again taking on their half-lidded look. As the silence dragged on, the breeze suddenly felt cold to Emily, and a little shiver worked its way from the base of her spine up to her neck. Finally, unable to stand the suspense, Emily whispered, “What?”

Sage shook her head, as if she were forcing herself to refocus. Her voice had just a tinge of worry. “I don’t know.” When she caught Emily’s concerned look, she reached out and squeezed her arm. “Nothing to worry about. Sometimes other entities are drawn to the séances, but usually they’re too weak to communicate anything. Well, good night, Em. See you tomorrow!”

Emily stayed on the porch as she watched Sage get into her car and drive away, trying to sense whatever had caught Sage’s attention, but all she felt was the night air. Finally, with one last shiver, Emily went back inside, locking the heavy wooden door behind her.

There were a few empty glasses in the dining room, so Emily stacked them and took them back to the kitchen. She returned to put down the place settings for breakfast the next morning, then walked across the hall to check the parlor for any stray glasses. Like the dining room, the parlor was spacious and had windows on two walls. The windows in the wall facing the front porch stretched all the way from the floor to the ceiling. During nice spring and fall weather, the open windows gave guests easy access to the porch. North Georgia summers were too hot for that, and Emily was glad her grandparents had retrofitted the house with a very modern air-conditioning system. It still got stuffy on the third floor, but that gabled room was only used for storage now, anyway.

Finally done for the night, Emily double-checked that all of the lights were off and retreated into her bedroom, which was at the back of the ground floor, across the hall from the kitchen. The same breeze that had felt so good on the porch was now blowing through the open bedroom window. Not wanting to get a chill in the middle of the night, though, Emily shut it, but not before gazing toward the cemetery. The first headstones were only two-hundred feet away, and here at the back of the house, where the light from the porch didn’t reach, they stood out gray against the darkness. People who didn’t know Emily well always expressed shock when they learned her bedroom had a cemetery view, but Emily loved beginning and ending each day with the historic property. Yes, the house and cemetery grounds were haunted, but she had never experienced anything more uncomfortable than the flirtatious ghost of Mr. Dawson, who liked to personally welcome women to his mausoleum. And if there had been a truly evil entity lurking there, Emily was certain that Sage would have sensed it by now and given her a warning.

Emily’s mind immediately went back to Sage’s behavior on the front porch. She had definitely been sensing something unusual from the direction of the cemetery, and despite her words of reassurance, Emily couldn’t help but wonder what exactly Sage had perceived. Or maybe, thought Emily, the question wasn’t what, but whom.
