Blurb:

I am the monarch of Manhattan’s underworld.
A corrupt king, ruling a sinful empire.
I wasn’t born to the crown.
Nevertheless, I wear it well.
Aislinn Granville is the Crown Jewel of my empire—my queen.
To my enemies, she’s my Achilles heel—a perfect pawn.
Without her, I am a wounded warrior.
A ruthless, relentless beast.
There is nowhere she can be taken that I won’t find her.
No adversary I won’t crush to get her back.
Even if I have to burn this city to the ground.

My Thoughts:

Damon King is upset and doesn’t care who knows it. Him being upset makes him seem more human and that he actually has a heart under that tough exterior. Aslinn Granville was able to figure out what’s going on – me, I’d probably freak out. We women are good at problem solving and that shouldn’t be discounted.

There’s plenty of suspense and action to keep you riveted from beginning to end. The hot and steamy parts don’t hurt either. Of course the suspense has me curious as to what the author had in store, which made it hard to put down. What I liked about this was that because this is book two, secrets get revealed. But don’t worry they don’t all get revealed at once so it forces, bad choice of words, you to continue this adventure.

The battle of wills still seems to be there but not as much as in book one. That’s no surprise since Aislinn’s will is so strong. Damon’s is more alpha but that all comes from how much he cares for her. The story seems so real that just goes to show this author knows what she’s doing. She knows just what to create in order to get our emotions involved.

With this story, I can feel more of a connection between our main characters. As I see their bond strengthen, I try to slow down. I’ve come to enjoy our couple and I’m not ready for this duet to be over yet. At least until the suspense has come to an end – and a surprise to me was that part of that suspense was romantic. Our author was very sweet by including a treat at the end.

Excerpt:

My heartbeat is an erratic, distracting pitter-patter against my ribs as I take in the stark beauty of the man standing in front of me. He looks like the same man I ran from. Almost.
The same rich black hair and inky eyelashes. The same strong, shadowed jawline and high, elegant cheekbones. The same spark of intensity lighting up those dark, dark eyes.
But now there are smudges beneath them. And faint horizontal lines, like the silvery remnants of a shattered spider web, crossing his forehead.
Damon is glaring at me like an adversary he’s torn between spanking or fucking. There is yearning in his gaze, a faint glimmer of tenderness beneath his infuriated expression.
I like it. A lot.
The panic and fear and pure terror that filled my veins just a few hours ago hasn’t yet evaporated. Those intense emotions are still there, like toxins that have yet to be flushed from my system. I don’t want to be treated with kid gloves. Not by Damon King.
I need his intensity now more than ever. I am desperate to revel in the raging storm Damon and I create when we’re together. The kind of storm that deserves a name. Deserves to be written in history books for its power . . . and for the toll of its destruction.
I want the shocking illumination of lightning. The ominous energy of thunder.
I want to give and take.
Clash and break.
Writhe and shake.
“Damon.” I say his name like a warning. I need the savage who claimed me as his own. My savage king.
He presses a firm kiss to my forehead, his fingers lightly pushing into the hair at the base of my scalp. “Tell me this,” he says. “Is there any hurt I can’t kiss better?”
The throaty rumble of Damon’s voice is like a liberal pour of molasses on my frayed nerves. “No.” My nose is flush with his chest and I breath deep that scent I didn’t think I would ever smell again. Wood and whiskey and raw masculinity. So damn intoxicating.
He sweeps his tongue along the rim of my ear. “Is there any hurt I can’t lick better?”
The tension in my shoulders eases as I flatten my palms against his chest. “No.”
Damon lifts my chin, our eyes locking on each other. “Is there any hurt I can’t fuck better?”
My cheeks warm as I draw my lower lip between my teeth. Then I shake my head slowly, “No.”
He smiles that darkly seductive grin and my stomach flips. “Let’s go take a shower.”
I nod my head eagerly. A long hot shower sounds perfect. A long hot shower—with my savage king—sounds downright exquisite. By the time the water is running, my borrowed bathrobe is just a white smudge of bad memory strewn across the tile floor.
Damon begins unbuttoning his shirt and I eagerly reach for his belt. When he is as naked as I am, he cups my chin between his thumb and forefingers and tips it upward. His kiss is hard but not punishing. The perfect amount of pressure.
I moan low in my throat.
He growls in return. And when we pull apart, we are wearing matching lust-drunk grins.
“Do you trust me?” he asks.
“I thought you said I shouldn’t trust anyone who has to ask.”
“I’m asking now.”
The truth falls from my lips. “With my life.”

My Thoughts:

Aislinn Granville has been given an impossible task. Damon King is a self-made man. He’s also very sure of himself. I loved that the author let him tell us exactly who he is. I also liked that we get his impressions of Aislinn.

Loved the battle of wills. It had me looking forward to seeing who was going to break first. It’s also a story that teases and just causes questions to constantly pop into my head. Damon was very good at keeping both Aislinn and us off kilter. The suspense the author creates does the same and I don’t mind. Early on I became hooked and there was no way that I was putting this book down until I was done.

Besides the great main characters, the author has some secondary characters that I could picture actually existing. With all the things coming out in the news lately, they would fit right in. It was interesting to see which people had a conscience and which did not – especially when it came to those they love. I have to tell you that the ending had me screaming. But the worst part is that I have to wait over a month to find out if my questions get answered – I’m not a very patient person.

Excerpt:

“Put me down.” I keep my cool, making the demand as stiffly as if I’m asking him to pass the salt.
But my show of composure crumbles as he angles his head to look at me. Barely an inch separates the tips of our noses. I stare, entranced by the fine scar that marks his left eyebrow. I want to kiss it.
“Or what?”
“Hmmm?”
One corner of his mouth tics up, his eyes flicking away from mine. “You look damn good in my arms.”
I follow his stare and am met by our reflection in the bathroom mirror. I blink, taking in the sight of my naked body held against King’s broad chest, the tanned, inked forearms I’d practically drooled over earlier now wrapped around my back and behind my knees.
I am naked. King is dressed.
There is something indecently erotic about our image. I look like the heroine of an old Harlequin novel—a down on her luck maid or secretary about to be ravished by her big, bad boss. A powerless woman soon to be stripped of her virtue.
I know what it’s like when a man overpowers a woman. When he uses force to take what’s not his. To hurt and abuse and terrorize.
And I know that this isn’t that.
It may not look like it, but I have the power in this situation. Damon King came to me. First at my apartment and now in his. He broke down two doors tonight.
I may be naked, but the only reason he’s touching me is because he knows I want him to.
Emboldened, I look away from our reflection and directly into King’s eyes again. Leaning in, I brush the tip of my nose against his. “Kiss me.”
I’ve barely pushed the words out when his lips are on mine. The taste of him is an explosion inside my mouth. Smooth and potent, but with a hint of mint. As if he swilled some of that Balvenie from his bar and then sucked on a peppermint candy.
He kisses like a conqueror. Stealing my breath along with the last of my reservations.
He kisses like a king. Staking his claim, demanding his due.

“You’re the target, Aislinn.”
“What?” Her lashes fly open, jaw momentarily sagging before snapping shut. “That’s ridiculous. You’re lying.”
Aislinn is now barely a foot away from me, and I can’t hold back the coarse chuckle that rumbles from my throat like thunder. “Don’t be naïve. Your father’s too valuable to hurt, he’s already proven he can be bought. Lytton is just an employee. And your mother is too ill. Which leaves you, Aislinn—the perfect bargaining chip. Leverage, if you will.”
“I don’t believe you,” she says, standing her ground. “If that were true, my father would have warned me.”
I shrug, knowing this next declaration is going to shock her even further. “Either way, you’ll be staying with me until this situation is contained.”
The pulse at the base of Aislinn’s throat flutters wildly, like a caged bird trapped beneath her skin. “You’re insane.”
She’s caught, all right. By me.
“Maybe. But if you fall into their hands, your father’s just going to ask me to get you back.” I take a step toward her, Aislinn’s chin lifting to maintain eye contact. “I’m a busy man. There’s no need to waste my time hunting you down later when you’re standing in front of me right now.”
She flinches at the impact of my intention. “Who the hell do you think you are?”
I ignore the question, dragging my eyes away from the sweatshirt that has become damp because of Aislinn’s wet hair, the fabric molding itself to her curves. “There’s a car parked out front right now, and I’ll send someone to guard your door tonight. But I expect you to be packed and ready by tomorrow afternoon. You will stay with me until everything is sorted out.”
She doesn’t back down an inch, impassioned fury turning her spine into a steel bar. “If I’m really in danger, I can hire my own bodyguard. I don’t need you, King.”
A low chuckle rattles inside my throat as I stare her down. Given the difference in our sizes, it isn’t difficult to do. My answer is confident, and more than a little condescending. Some might say cocky. “Yes, you do."
