My Thoughts:

Zed has very low self-esteem when we first meet him.  But I loved that he had someone willing to fight for him.  Vi likes to test limits.  She seems to wear a mask to hide behind. 

 

When we first meet these characters, it seems like they’re telling the reader their innermost thoughts that they won’t share with others.  They both seem to be fighting the inevitable but for different reasons. 

 

Usually there’s a saying about “saving the best for last” but this has a twist that makes it the toughest read of the four – at least that’s my feeling.  This is one that will probably take more than one day to read.  It’s emotionally heavy so it’s a lot to take in.   

 

Even though you know going in that this is a conclusion to a series, the author doesn’t skip out on anything by taking it easy on her readers.  It was easy to see the chapters go by quickly but she made it hard to see if our main characters would ever have any type of relationship.  But that is a smart thing because it’s just one reason to keep on reading.  By the time you finish, you’ll realize that everything that came before was worth it in the end. 

Reaper is the fourth and  final book in the Redwood Rebels Series.

My Thoughts:

The author starts the book off with an interesting Prologue.  Does it set the tone for the rest of the book?  You won’t know if you don’t read it – so you’d better not skip by it.

Marni sets us up for a mystery.  What is she up to?  Why is she doing what she’s doing?  Talon is a young man you can’t really figure out.  What’s his story?  Is he hiding something?  Is he running from something?  When will he supply us with the answers?  And will this story just cause more questions to pop up?

With so many questions that formed early on, how could I not delve into what this author has created.  There is some bullying going on, which some of you may not be happy with, but this story is more than that.  These are not characters that are easy to get to know.  It may take the whole story, or the whole series, before you truly know who they are.

There were times when I wondered when we were going to get to the “meat” of the story.  I found myself getting impatient wanting my answers now instead of letting the author do her job.  Being the first book of a new series, sometimes things take time to develop and I had to keep reminding myself about that.  But then I started doing some research and found that this actually ties in with her Redwood High series.

So, since Ms. Leigh is a new author for me, going back and reading the other series may help me to understand this current group of characters.  This book is certainly not one that you would want your teen to read.  I would say it’s more for those that are of college age or higher.  They do things that I certainly wouldn’t expect a young person in high school to do.  I have nieces and nephews that I hope would not act the way this group behaves – which is a good reminder that this is a work of fiction.  It didn’t stop me from reading though – have to find out if the author answers the questions I had at the beginning.  But you’ll have to read it yourself if you want the same answers.  I’m also interested to see how the rest of this series plays out.  Especially with the ending; she showed me that my questions aren’t finished yet.
