EXCERPT:


“You’re a real prick Sebastian.” Her words are emotionally charged. Good, she’s pissed off, now she knows how I feel.

“I know that, always have been…”

“We both know that’s not true. The way you’ve been acting today, that’s not how I remember you,” she interrupts, “You didn’t treat Amy like this or anyone for that matter. You’ve always been a kind person, the one who would give the skin off his back to help someone else.”

Her name. That’s all I really hear. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to my senses, and I damn near swerve into the other lane trying to reign myself in.

Clenching my teeth I grit out, “Do not say her name. Don’t talk about her, don’t even mention her in my presence. The person you remember me being isn’t the person I am right now.”

Lily crosses her arms over her chest and I swear I see fire flicker in her blue eyes.

“Pff, that much is obvious. The Sebastian I knew never would’ve talked to me like this, or made open ended threats at me.” There's a pregnant pause and it looks as if she is gathering her thoughts, getting ready to attack me with another set of verbal rage. “You have a lot of balls telling me that I can speak my sisters name in your presence, and even more acting like an asshole to me. I lost so much more than my sister that day, but yet you want me to pretend…” She looks away and strands of blonde hair falls into her face. When she looks back at me it feels like I’ve died and gone to hell.

“Maybe you can pretend that she didn’t exist, but I can’t.”

My Thoughts:

Clark Jefferson is not pleased by his father’s riot act. Emerson is not like most girls and it was interesting to see how that affects Clark. She seems timid and almost afraid of her own shadow when we are first introduced to her. Clark couldn’t be more opposite. He impressed me though – not all young men would be that responsible. He’s very insightful for his age.

He’s friends with Vance and Ava. If you haven’t kept up with the series, their story is titled The Dare. This book seems to tie some of this series together but that’s not surprising since they all go to the same university. It’s a nice way to catch up and see what the main characters from the previous books are up to.

This is a book where you can actually see that there is a hero to the story. Clark became Emerson’s champion. It was sweet to see how protective he became and that was even before he really came to know her. He really helped Emerson blossom. Of the three stories that I’ve read this has to be the most romantic – even with the ups and downs.

Our authors have written my most favorite of the series so far. There wasn’t really anything that I didn’t like about it. I wasn’t impressed with the fathers but that just means the authors have done a great job in how they went about creating them. When I started this series I wasn’t sure if I would see that light at the end of the tunnel. Now as I’ve gotten to see how this series is developing, I don’t know that I want to get to the end. For now, at least, I’ll get to continue to see how inventive this authors are going to be with North Woods University and some of its students.

“Please don’t look at me like that…” I slur.

“Please leave… just… leave me alone,” she pleads and my heart breaks at her words. That’s what my mom used to tell me. She asked me to leave her alone and I listened to her. Maybe if I hadn’t listened to her and listened to my gut instead she would still be here, alive.

“I won’t leave you,” I tell her, shaking my head, determination coating my words. “But please don’t look at me like I’m going to hurt you. Please, don’t be scared of me.”

“You’re dunk,” she points out and that wild look in her eyes overtakes her features now. She continues taking small steps backwards, retreating further into the room, further away from me. I want her close, in my arms, safe, secure. It’s the strangest, but truest emotion I’ve ever felt before.

“Yes… I had something to drink, but that doesn’t change the fact that I would never hurt you. I can control myself,” I sigh and set the plate down on top of the dresser

“You’re scaring me,” she admits, her voice small and shaky. I don’t know who hurt her, but in that moment I vowed to myself to find out. I will find out who did this to her and then I will make them pay. It’s obvious she was powerless, weak, but she’s not anymore. She has me now, and I’ll protect her, defend her till my last breath. I know this without even thinking.

Holding my hands up, with my palms showing, I try to calm her like I would a scared animal. “You don’t have to be scared of me. Not ever,” I assured her. “I just want… I want you to feel safe. You don’t have to be scared here. I promise I’ll keep you safe. No one will hurt you, least of all me.”

My heart is racing, and my breathing is shallow now that we're face to face. He’s still angry, nothing but hate and sadness reflecting in his eyes. It's then looking at him, seeing those emotions swirl that I realize I’m not mad at him. I don't hate him for doing this.

I couldn't, not even if I wanted to. Instead, I feel something entirely different…I feel remorse. I feel sorry that this is what he has turned into, sorry that there is no love in his life, that he's lost the light, the kindness he once had.

Feeling a need to bring back that man, I grasp onto his shirt, grabbing a handful of the fabric, pulling him even closer while lifting up my head from the mattress. I don’t think. “Don’t go!” I order, but he’s already out the door, slamming it closed shut behind him, leaving me sitting on the bed naked from the waist down with nothing but the memory of his lips on mine. What did we just do? When I feel like my legs are steady enough to hold my weight, I slide off the bed and pick up my discarded clothes. Just as I’m pulling my panties up, the door flies open again.

Cally stands in the doorway her mouth gaping open, betrayal and hurt in her now cold gaze. “You knew I liked him! How could you do this to me? I thought you were my friend.”

My Thoughts:

Ava Wilder’s past and present are about to collide. Vance Preston seems to be angry with just about everyone. He’s all about hate and revenge. This is another case where a man bullies a woman. If you have issues with how women sometimes get treated by men, this is your warning. You have to remember though that this is a work of fiction and there is romance.

It was interesting to see that the parents seemed so self-absorbed that the children seemed more of an afterthought. The story shows how that can also affect the family unit. They seemed so oblivious to the needs of their children. Their wants and needs seemed to be more important. The story seemed to pit the adults against the kids.

What I love about the authors is they blend so well together. Unless you are a real pro at dissecting an author’s writing style, I don’t think you will be able to say with any certainty this author wrote this or this author wrote that. They make an addicting pair. I have to know what they plan to come up with next. This is especially true after I read the ending of Ava and Vance’s story and got a hint to possibly the next book they’re going to collaborate on – one can hope.

Staggering backwards like I’m drunk I harden my gaze, “Entertain me con-artist, show me another use for that pretty mouth of yours, besides spouting off lies.”

“I hate you,” She spits through gritted teeth, the lustful haze diminishing in her eyes.

For being stuck in this stupid house with you.

“Come on, we ain’t got all night…” I tisk, impatiently.

I’m so caught up in taunting her, in feeling the lick of hate her presence brings me that I don’t notice the slap coming towards my cheek until it’s too late. Her hand makes contact with my cheek, and my head flies to the side with the impact of the blow.

My jaw turns to steel and my temper ignites. I’m reacting before I even get a chance to stop myself. Reaching for her, my fingers curl around her throat, my hold is surprisingly gentle for the amount of bitterness flowing through my veins. Ava’s reaction to me is petrified fear and she starts to tremble when I lean into her face, giving her delicate throat a firm squeeze.

“If you’re going to put your hands on someone then you better be prepared for them to put their hands on you.”

“Don’t…” She croaks.

“What? Hurt you?” I tilt my head to the side, eyeing her heart shaped face. “I could never hurt you like you hurt me, you’ve done enough of that for the both of us. I’m merely trying to show you a sliver, a fraction of the pain you made me feel.” Feeling as if I’m seconds away from crashing and burning I release her, and take a step back. Then I turn to walk away. I’m done. Done with this cat and mouse game.

Staggering backwards like I’m drunk I harden my gaze, “Entertain me con-artist, show me another use for that pretty mouth of yours, besides spouting off lies.”

“I hate you,” She spits through gritted teeth, the lustful haze diminishing in her eyes.

I hate myself too.

For wanting you.

For hating you.

For being stuck in this stupid house with you.

“Come on, we ain’t got all night…” I tisk, impatiently.

I’m so caught up in taunting her, in feeling the lick of hate her presence brings me that I don’t notice the slap coming towards my cheek until it’s too late. Her hand makes contact with my cheek, and my head flies to the side with the impact of the blow.

My jaw turns to steel and my temper ignites. I’m reacting before I even get a chance to stop myself. Reaching for her, my fingers curl around her throat, my hold is surprisingly gentle for the amount of bitterness flowing through my veins. Ava’s reaction to me is petrified fear and she starts to tremble when I lean into her face, giving her delicate throat a firm squeeze.

“If you’re going to put your hands on someone then you better be prepared for them to put their hands on you.”

“Don’t…” She croaks.

“What? Hurt you?” I tilt my head to the side, eyeing her heart shaped face. “I could never hurt you like you hurt me, you’ve done enough of that for the both of us. I’m merely trying to show you a sliver, a fraction of the pain you made me feel.” Feeling as if I’m seconds away from crashing and burning I release her, and take a step back. Then I turn to walk away. I’m done. Done with this cat and mouse game.
