About UNLOCKING SHADOWS:

Coming September 18th

Gwen Kendall spent ten years in the Navy and used the last four to create a life for herself she could be proud of away from the confines of her overprotective family. Being the only woman in the Kendall clan tended to be a bit overwhelming at times.
Chad Schaeffer had been hired on to help restore an old farmhouse for one of the returning Kendall siblings. He’d heard about the trouble the family had encountered and honestly didn’t want to go anywhere near their properties. He had a change of heart when he saw the most recently returned Kendall sibling stepping out of her car with a key in her hand.
Gwen had waited a very long time to have a place to call her own, just as she had waited for the right man to share her life. One night of seduction convinces her she’s found both, but someone wants to take it all away. It’s been said that old houses retain a piece of each person who has lived there, but she never counted on the dark shadows wanting a piece of her.

DRC Promotions Presents: Vindication by Anne L. Parks; #BlogTour, #NowAvailable, #Live, #Review, #Giveaway

Vindication
Anne L .Parks
Release Date: March 28th 2017
Rating:  5 Stars

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from DRC’s Promotions and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

Kylie Tate is the happiest she has ever been since accepting Alex Stone’s marriage proposal. Nothing can stand in the way of her happily ever after. Until Alex’s father, James, escapes from the prison hospital, and disappears without a trace.

Alex is determined to marry Kylie as soon as possible and start their future together. Having his father free to wreak havoc is not part of the plan. When James is found dead on Alex’s property, Alex is charged with murder—and the District Attorney is going after the death penalty.

Kylie is in for the fight of her life to get Alex acquitted. Faced with the possibility of Alex’s conviction, will Kylie go outside the law to save him?

Kylie Tate gets the question of a lifetime.  And she’s sharing her happiness with Alex Stone.  They are a couple that seem perfect for each other.

This book starts off so happy and no offense to the author but as each chapter goes by I’m anticipating the proverbial shoe to drop.  It’s terrible that I put that expectation on the author but that shows how conditioned we can become.  There were some scenes that I wished that I could get into Alex’s head so I knew what he was thinking.  But I loved how Kylie was letting us see her life through her eyes.

To give this author her due, when that shoe eventually did drop it wasn’t what I expected.  I can honestly say it was a surprise and that just made me love this story more.  It’s a story of great strength and watching that strength show up again and again in this author’s well-orchestrated scenes is what had me following Kylie and Alex’s story until the very end.  And I was glad to finally see what Alex was thinking.

This was the first book of the trilogy that I read.  I didn’t feel like I had to read the first two books in order to enjoy Vindication but it is like reading the ending of a book before reading the story.  So if you get the chance, I would read Of Demons & Stones and Revenge first.  This way you will get the full experience.  The ending of this book also left me with a sense that Kylie and Alex’s “adventures” are just beginning.  Can’t wait to see what this author is going to pull out of her hat next.

Born and raised in the Rocky Mountains, Anne L. Parks has spent the last 25 years moving all over the United States. Married to the Navy - well a Commander in the Navy - Parks has lived in various locales throughout the United States. She currently resides in the Washington D.C area, and is loving every minute. When not writing, she spends her time reading, doing yoga, mountain biking, and keeping track of four kids. And drinking wine.

2013 marked her debut in publishing. Her first novel, Strangers, released on her 45th birthday. She was amazed at the number of people who fell in love with a story about two people dealing with grief, and finding love again. Abby and Bryce were the perfect couple to introduce Parks as an up-and-coming author.

Her second novel, The Return, released in December 2013. A wonderful Christmas romance, it is the first book in the Return To Me series. Book two, Return To Newport, released April 29th, and followed the couple through the murky waters of saying good-bye to a past that refused to let go. Lauren's Return, the third book in the series, released on August 19th. This chronicles the challenges of bringing together a family amidst tragedy and death, and still holding firmly to the love they have fought so hard to keep alive. The fourth book, Returning Home, shifts the focus away from Jake and Eve, and delves into the life Eve's eldest daughter. Clarissa has a secret she has guarded for most of her life. Fearing it will be revealed, she refuses to allow love into her heart - until she meets Griff. December 2014 brought the close of this series, with the release of RSVP: A Return To Me Christmas novella. The wedding of the year is threatened by Mother Nature, forcing the couple to re-evaluate whether "happily ever after" is really attainable.

Stepping out of her comfort zone, Parks delved into the paranormal with a group of highly talented authors. The result? An unexpected fantasy of four sisters fighting to save the earth - and each other - from their deranged mother. Elementals, A Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance Anthology, released on May 15th. Summer brought more collaboration with the release of a Fourth of July themed short story, FlyBoy, that was included in the Sparks Fly boxed set.

— SYNOPSIS —

Mikey Hardin is a murderer. At least that’s what his ex-wife wants the police to believe…

A tattoo artist and single father, Mikey becomes a suspect in a series of homicides thanks to an anonymous tip from his ex. The case against him seems straightforward, especially since Mikey is connected to the victims, but police detective Harry Hunter knows finding the psychopath isn’t that simple. The physical evidence doesn’t add up. After Mikey is released and amid the turmoil of his life, he meets Grace Bell, a beautiful divorcee, in a chance encounter.

Mikey is everything that straight-laced Grace isn’t…

Grace is tired of living a rigid existence and wants to break free from the routine of her mundane life. The tattoo artist’s free spirit and charm quickly draw her into his world. From the back of his Harley, he teaches her how to let go and have fun, leading to a sizzling passion she never knew existed.

Another woman is found dead, and the killer isn’t finished yet…

Grace is unaware of Mikey’s part in the investigation of the local homicides, but when her estranged father, detective Harry Hunter, finds out who she’s dating, he’s quick to fill her in. Even though he thinks Mikey is innocent, there is a killer in Webster and he’s not stopping until he gets what he wants. Every victim is connected to Mikey, and her father fears Grace will be next.

After Detective Hunter receives a threatening phone call from the killer, he rushes to protect his daughter, but is Grace really the next target of the…

— EXCERPT —

The doorbell to Ink Addiction chimed and Mikey inwardly groaned. He ducked behind the curtain toward the back of the shop. Through a gap he watched Detective Harry Hunter survey the parlor until he spotted the glass top counter and Mandy.

Her bright smile greeted him. “What can we help you with today?”

“Looking for Mikey Hardin. Is he here?”

Please don’t tell him I’m here.

“Yeah, he’s in the back.” She nodded in Mikey’s direction.

Dammit.

“Mike!” she shouted. Her feet padded toward him. “Mike…”

He came out of his hiding spot and nearly ran into her.

Her face flushed. “Oh…this guy is here to see—”

“I heard.”

Mandy returned to her post behind the counter as Hunter joined Mikey back by his work station, a cup of coffee in his hand.

“Hardin, need to have a word with you.”

What now?

“All right.” He waved him over. “We’ll need to make this quick, got another tattoo to do in twenty minutes.”

“This won’t take long. I’ll come right out with it. Do you know a Chelsea Rand?” Hunter scrutinized Mikey’s face.

“No, can’t say I do. Is there a reason you’re asking about her?”

“She was found murdered.”

“Another one? Shit, when?”

Harry sipped his coffee, eyeing Mikey over the rim of the cup. “About a year ago.”

“And you think I had something to do with it?” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “When is this nightmare going to end?” he muttered under his breath.

“What’s that?” Hunter asked.

“Nothing. When did you say she was killed?”

“A year ago. You didn’t know her?”

“That’s what I said.”

“Do you keep records of your customers?”

“Clients. Yes, but names only unless they pay with a credit card. Sometimes emails.”

“You wouldn’t happen to have the list handy or on a computer, would you?”

Mikey walked behind the curtain where he’d tried hiding from the detective. Hunter followed him.

He sat down at a glass top desk with chrome legs and began tapping on the laptop keyboard. He entered the name into the search function of the scheduling program. Chelsea Rand came up, along with her email address used for newsletters with the dates and times of all her appointments. Hunter leaned over his shoulder.

“How come I see her name?” the detective asked.

My Thoughts:

Mikey Hardin isn’t having a good day.  Grace Bell is wondering what has become of her life.  Harry Hunter is a man on a mission.  Once these three characters meet their lives seem to intertwine into what is a great start to the A Tattoo Crimes Series.  It’s also the point where I found myself hooked on the mystery that this author has done a great job of creating.

I hated having to put this book down.  It interrupted my pleasure.  I especially hated when lunch was over because that meant I had to stop trying to see where this mystery was going to take me.  Grace was a woman who needed someone to pull her out of her comfort zone and Mikey just may be the man who fits that bill.

Mikey has a profession that sees a lot of people.  He also reminded me that my cable company took away one of my favorite channels – so missing Ink Master.  Harry is that one that leads the reader into solving the mystery and how it connects to our hero.  There’s some suspense that teases me – do I think I can solve it along with Harry.  There’s heat – Mikey and Grace are combustible together.  And the author gives you moments where you’ll giggle or laugh.  You even feel sorry for the hero but I think he would disagree with the hero part.

Our author did a great job of creating a really hateful character.  If she were in my vicinity I don’t know if I could hold my temper.  You realize how creative the author is because Mikey doesn’t seem to be able to catch a break and you can see this actually happening to someone.  I couldn’t tell if the ending is HFN or HEA.  Does this mean that Grace and Mikey will be making an appearance in book two?  Will have to be patient and wait and see.

— ABOUT THE AUTHOR —

A.J. Norris is a romantic suspense and paranormal romance novelist. She began writing as a way to dim down the voices inside her head. She enjoys being able to get inside someone else's head, even a fictional one, and see what they see. Watching how her characters deal with difficult situations or squirm with the uncomfortable ones make the hard work of writing all worth it. She is a movie buff, especially book adaptations, loves watching her son play baseball and communing with other writers. She lives with her family who are extremely tolerant (at least most of the time) of all her late nights behind the computer.
