All he does is stare … And it sets my body on fire.

He’s a muscular giant with raw, unbridled needs.
If I run, he’ll catch me.
If I fight, he’ll pin me down.
And worst of all … I’m beginning to like it.
But what I fear the most is that he lives for it.

Everyone knows a beast can’t be chained.
One way or another … his darkest needs will always come out to play.

EXCERPT:

In the dark of night, I’m dragged out of my bed.
It takes me ages to come to my senses, my mind still enraptured by the dream I cannot escape. I’m still half-asleep, my feet still touching the grass surrounding the huts at the Holy Land, every step feeling like I’m wandering farther and farther away from home.
Home … that tiny house in a rural town, a place I once knew before I was taken.
Before I became a prisoner to a cult.
My eyes spring open, and I’m here, in the flesh, back in the present, but this new room in this new house I’m in is still a waking nightmare. And a man’s hand is clutched firmly around my wrist as he hauls me straight out of my bed.
“What are you doing?” I mutter, still sleep drunk, my body shivering from the warm blanket suddenly being torn away from me.
It’s only when I’ve blinked a couple of times that I realize who is tugging me along.
Soren.
One of the three men who keeps me captive here in this godforsaken house.
The quiet, beefy one with the blond beard who rarely speaks has come to take me away … again.
Where will I go this time? Another cult?
Have I disappointed yet another group of men?
Snide remarks come to mind, and in a moment of bravery, I tear my hand away from his grip and say, “No.”
He stops in his tracks, but it is only when he raises his shoulders, straightens his posture, and arches his back that I realize just how huge and muscular he really is. And how tiny I am in comparison.
Slowly, he spins on his heels, every inch of his thick, veiny muscles straining against the flimsy shirt he’s wearing. When his piercing blue eyes bore into mine, I’m momentarily at a loss of words … and breath.
One step of his giant feet is all it takes to make me back down, to make me want to cower, but my mind tells me not to be swayed by his attempt to intimidate me.
What is he going to do?
Hurt me?
He’s not allowed.
After all, he isn’t the one in charge.
One of the other two men who runs this place is Eli.
And when Eli tells him not to damage the goods, he’ll definitely take that to heart.
These men aren’t like the men from the Holy Land. They’re not here to satisfy their own needs. They’re here to punish me for mine.
But I refuse to let my own suffering make me feel guilty for what happened to me.
Not even as Soren stares at me with his jaw clenched and his muscles taut and threatening do I waver in my ability to speak up for what’s right.
“Let me go,” I say, trying to maintain my composure even as I’m facing a beast of a man.
The only response I get is a brief bear-like grunt. His nostrils flare, and he holds out his hand. “Come.”
My eyes narrow, and so do his.
His voice lowers. “Now.”
It’s not a question.
And I don’t know if I want to find out what happens if I don’t listen.

My Thoughts:

Marco Garcia has his eye on the prize.  Felicity isn’t sure her life will ever be the same again.  If you’ve read the House of Sin series than you’ll want this added to your library.  But if you haven’t, that’s ok because this gives you enough that you’ll want to check out the series anyway.

You wouldn’t think that a novella could be a page-turner but this author will prove you wrong.  We have plot twists, revelations and an ending that really isn’t one.  In order to get a full sense of what the House of Sin is all about you’ll need to read the first three books (and those should be read in order).  This book gives the background of the secondary characters seen there.  And this leaves you wanting to see more of Marc and Felicity – fingers crossed.

EXCERPT:

“That’s not a text file.”

I glanced down only to realize the file had finished loading while I’d been trying to get my brain to work. “No, it’s not.”

“It’s a video file?” Her confused green eyes glanced up at me. “Of what?”

“A meeting. Between a high-ranking member of the Entente and Interpol.”

Her eyes widened. “Oh sh*t. Someone turned on the Entente? That’s not good. If the House leaders find out, he’ll be executed.”

No kidding. I leaned back against the desk but still didn’t start the video.

Her eyes grew wary. “What else is on there?”

I didn’t want to tell her but couldn’t hold back. Not now. “I’m pretty sure it’s the evidence that was being handed over to the Interpol agent. It’s graphic.”

Her face paled. “Turn it on.”

“I don’t think you should watch it.”

“I’m a licensed medical doctor. I can handle graphic. Turn it on.”

I scratched the back of my head. “Felicity—”

“Marc,” she tossed back.

I grimaced.

“Oh. I get it. Marc isn’t your real name, is it?”

I hated that hint of disappointment in her voice. I wasn’t sure why, but it gutted me. In a way I didn’t expect. “No, but it’s close.”

“How close?”

“My real name’s Marco.”

“And your last name?”

When I didn’t answer, she nodded, lips tight all over again. “You’re not gonna tell me. Fine. Whatever. Turn on the video.”

“I really don’t think—”

“I don’t care what you think. I’m going to watch this video one way or another, and if I have to steal your gun to do so, I will. I’ve got tricks up my sleeve that don’t include knives, so save us both the trouble of a knock-down, drag-out fight I’m going to win anyway, and just turn the damn thing on.”

I stared at her irritated eyes and that cute little mouth tossing out threats she could never follow through on. But instead of being annoyed or amused, I was impressed. The woman was outgunned and she knew it, but she was still fighting, still putting me in my place, still making me crazy for her in ways that scrambled my brain.

“Fine. Okay.” I pushed away from the desk. “Just know I tried to stop you.”

“Yeah, you’re a big ol’ knight in shining armor, aren’t you?”

As I moved away, she hit the play button. And after only twenty seconds she gasped, “Oh shit.”

Something in my heart went out to her as I stood behind her, watching that awful video all over again. “Now you understand why I have to destroy the damn thing.”

ABOUT ELISABETH NAUGHTON:

Elisabeth Naughton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Elisabeth: “I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn’t have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn’t exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.

“Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

“My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier.

“I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.”

Behind the doors of the House of Sin, no one is ever safe…

I love him. It’s the only truth that matters now.

I’ve cast my old life aside and given myself fully to his wants and desires, to the fire he alone ignites inside me. And together, we’ve found strength and salvation in each other.

But there are evil forces, people who see me as a threat that must be undone. I trust that our love can withstand any test, but I can’t ignore the growing shadows lurking beyond our door.

Because I understand now that those shadows are not waiting to destroy me as I once feared. They’ve come for him. To steal him away from me for good. And to finally and completely engulf him in a sinister world he’s eluded for so long.

In the inescapable darkness of the House of Sin…

My Thoughts:

Natalie Salvatici starts us off right from where Deceived left off.  I didn’t think this series could get any more disgusting but this author’s imagination is endless.  Luc Salvatici thinks he’s doing the right thing but it’s going to be tough.  At times he’ll speak in his native tongue.  If you don’t know languages you may try to sound them out, check a dictionary, or skim over them.  But it is still romantic.  So that’s when you need a nice person who can speak them to you – nothing like putting you in the mood.

For me, this book was the most emotional of the series.  At times it may be hard to see but it’s still there.  Their love will shine through.  It’s not a series that’s all romance.  It’s something that you need to experience.  There’s just so much going on that involves feelings – anger, fear, happiness, apprehension, satisfaction.  So if you like a story that’s going to poke at your emotions than this book will do that for you.  And there will be times where you will be on the edge of your seat.  But be warned that you’ll miss a lot if you don’t start this series from the beginning.  Another reason would be because of the happy ending.  Plus the previous books don’t have an ending.  But we get another happy ending with this book because our author has a novella coming our way.

Excerpt:

“What are you doing?” He held up two hands and shuffled back until he hit the shower wall. “Get out of here.”

I stepped toward him. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Natalie, this isn’t funny.” An edge of panic rose up in his voice as he held his hands out further in front of him, trying to prevent me from touching him. “Just leave, okay?”

I shook my head. “I made you a promise, remember? I, Natalie, take you, Luc, as my husband...”

“Cazzo.” His eyes slammed shut, and he shook his head, a pained expression crossing his features. One I was desperate to kiss away. “Don’t. Just don’t, please.”

I was done letting him push me around. He needed this. I needed it too. “I promise to be faithful to you always.”

He groaned and dropped his head, his hands beginning to shake.

I moved closer, until his heat and the sexy scent of his skin surrounded me.

“In joy and pain.” I reached his hands and gently pushed them to the side. “In health and sickness. And I promise to love you and honor you, every day, for the rest of my life.”

“Merda. Please don’t...”

His chest rose and fell with his rapid breaths. He didn’t try to touch me, just let his hands fall to the shower wall at his back. But he didn’t open his eyes either, and he didn’t make any move to run from me.

“Luc...” I placed my hands on his sexy abs, loving the way he flinched under my touch but didn’t pull away. “Nothing about my promise to you has changed.” I pressed my lips against his chest very lightly. “And you didn’t break your promise to me. Not even the tiniest bit.”

Some doors were never meant to be opened…

I made a fateful mistake. I should never have peeked behind the doors into his forbidden world.

He can melt my resolve with one rough, whispered demand, and I feel myself giving in to the desire he still stirs inside me. And yet, if I want to survive, I must find a way to escape. Because if I don’t, I’m afraid I’ll be consumed by a shadowy world that will ultimately destroy me.

Lost forever in his wicked House of Sin…

Excerpt:

“I...I’m sorry about last night,” I managed, my voice raspy and weak and sounding nothing like mine. I shook my head, hating this never-ending tension between us. “I shouldn’t have gone out to the living room to—”

“I’m not.”

My eyes popped open. Sure I’d heard him wrong, I stared at him.

He met my gaze head-on, his incredibly unique eyes with that one odd pupil no longer somber or sad but very focused and as fierce as a hurricane. “I’m not sorry about last night, and I don’t want you to be either.”

For a heartbeat, I didn’t move. Was sure I’d imagined that answer. But the longer his gaze held mine and the deeper he looked into my eyes, the harder it was for me to believe him. Especially when those emotions were welling inside me all over again, feeding off every one of my fears and neuroses and doubts.”

I closed my eyes, willing the dam to hold so he wouldn’t see. “Don’t say that,” I whispered. “You don’t have to say things you don’t mean just make me feel bet—”

My chair jerked to the left, the movement shooting my eyes open and tensing my body. Luc stood leaning over me, his hands on both armrests of my seat, his face only inches from mine, his eyes as wild and stormy as they’d ever been.

“Get this through your head right now. Everything I’ve ever said to you has been the truth. I don’t say things I don’t mean. I’m not sorry about last night. I’ve been dying to get my hands on you for weeks. I want to put my hands on you right this second, only I’m fighting that urge because I don’t want to scare you any more than I already have. And I guarantee later today when I’m gone I’m going to be plotting all the ways I can put my hands on you tonight when I get back.

“I know I fucked things up between us, and I’m trying like hell to fix them, but that doesn’t mean I’m lying to you. I didn’t tell you the details of what happened with Dante yesterday because I didn’t know how to tell you without stressing you out. I handled it badly, and I’m sorry for that. I’m sorry that everything I’m doing is only making things worse between us, but I swear to you that’s not my intention. I’m not trying to hurt you, Natalie. I’m trying to protect you. And I promise I’ll try to be better about sharing with you what’s going on. But don’t you dare tell me what I think or feel or mean or want, mannaggia. I know what I want. I want you. I want us. And more than anything, I want you to believe in me the way you did before everything went to shit, because nothing I’m doing to try to get us out of this fuckstorm means a goddamn thing if I don’t have you on my side.”

My heart stuttered as I stared at him, his words spinning in my head in the silence that followed. Then very slowly, it picked up speed until it was a whir in my ears.

Of all the things I’d expected him to say in response to my apology, that wasn’t it. That wasn’t even close to how I thought he’d react.

“I...” My tongue was dry, so dry I had to swallow to find the words. “I do believe in you,” I whispered, my heart suddenly pounding in my chest. “I’m just...scared.”

“Cazzo. I’m scared too, but if you give in to that fear, they win. They don’t want us together. You know that, don’t you? All the shit happening around us and the fact you can’t leave this estate is because they don’t want you in my life. But you know what? I don’t give a righteous fuck what they want. This is our life, not theirs. I have no intention of giving you up. You’re mine and I’m yours and everyone else can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.”

He captured my mouth in a hard, swift kiss that stole my breath. It wasn’t brutal, but it wasn’t sweet either. It was possessive and domineering, and when he dipped into my mouth and tasted me with his sinful tongue, I felt like the center of the universe, like every moment was spinning outward from this one.

Spinning outward from us.

Excerpt:

“You don’t want me,” he whispered in a lifeless voice, one I’d never heard from him. “You want a taste of the forbidden. Of what you think you saw at that party in New York. But what’s in me is not the same. It’s worse. It’s a darkness you can’t even imagine. And if you stay, it will devour you too.”

My heart thumped hard against my ribs as I tried to make sense of what he’d just said. I hadn’t been afraid once since I’d been with him, but I couldn’t deny the alarm sounding in my head as I looked into his haunted eyes. Because that was what they were, I realized. Haunted. By shadows and memories that sent icy fingers of dread down my spine. Whatever he was remembering, whatever he struggled with was so terrifying, it had just sucked the life out of his eyes right in front of me, leaving behind only a ghost of the man I’d spent the last few days with.

Could I survive that kind of darkness? I swallowed hard, trying to think.

He was right. What drew me to him wasn’t just his animal magnetism or his insanely good looks or even his overwhelming, protective nature. I was drawn to the very thing he seemed desperate to keep from me. To the danger swirling around him. To the shadows lurking in his eyes. To that forbidden darkness buried inside that was at the root of his need for dominance and control and even his hunger for me.
