Mistakes
Bad Choices
Too trusting
These are all words that describe the old me.

The mistakes I made over a decade ago still haunt my subconscious. I’ve tried to keep my past buried, but every time I see the darkness in my best friend Shelby’s eyes, my heart breaks all over again.

Sexy
Successful
Self-confident
These are words that describe me today.

Looking in the mirror, I see a sexy, confident and successful woman reflected back at me. I’ve found a man that not only fulfills my carnal desires, but one who is quickly filling the empty space in my heart. With both Kyle and Shelby by my side, my life is nearly perfect.

Perfect until one of the biggest mistakes of my life strolls back into town, bringing with him all of the darkness from my past.

I am Roni Monroe and this is my story.

~More About Brooke Lee~

Growing up, Brooke’s mother instilled a deep respect for the English language and a love of words. She taught Brooke to read and write and shared her appreciation for poetry. As a teen, poetry became an outlet for Brooke’s innermost thoughts and deepest, often times darkest feelings.

In school, teachers always told her “write what you know”, so that is what she did. At the not so tender age of forty-three, she started to write her first novel, I Am ShelbyJames (Beauty in the Darkness) and it is what she knows—emotions.

In her spare time—when she’s not writing—you can find Brooke cuddled on the couch with her husband of 20+ years, their fur babies, and a good (often naughty) eBook—unless of course she’s having cocktails with her Bestie at one of their favorite haunts.

Give Me Books Presents: Turning Back by J.A. Huss; #ReleaseBlitz, #NowAvailable, #Live, #Giveaway

Title: Turning Back
Series: Turning #2
Author: JA Huss
Genre: Dark Erotic Suspense
Release Date: April 12, 2017

Blurb:

I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness.

Quin, with his easy smile and charming good looks. He was always there for me... Until he wasn’t.

Smith, and his dispassionate attention. He was never there for me and he never regretted it.

Bric, the one who listened, but only to himself.  Self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-serving. He was never the one I wanted.

And now he might be the only one I have left.

It was good while it lasted, I guess. But it could’ve been so much more. It could’ve been so much better.

And that’s why I’m turning back.

Excerpt:

“So then what happened?” Bric asks.

We’re sitting at our booth in the White Room. Before I left, I’d sit in the middle of the bench, Quin would sit across from me in a chair, and Bric would sit to my left.

Bric is still to my left, Quin isn’t here yet—if he’s coming at all—and Adley is in her baby seat on my right.

Everything is familiar—but off.

“Then he went to bed.”

“What’d you do?”

“I sat there on the couch for a while trying to figure out what happened.”

“What did you come up with?” Bric is looking very intently at me. Like everything I’m saying is critically important.

“He hate-fucked me, that’s what I came up with, Bric!”

“Rochelle,” Bric says, throwing me one of those Don’t overreact looks.

“I’m serious. There’s no other explanation for it. He hate-fucked me. Revenge fuck.  Whatever you want to call it. That’s what happened last night.” I sigh and try not to feel depressed and sad. “And then this morning I got out of bed to go check on Adley when she woke up, and when I came back, he was gone.”

“Gone?” Bric asks. “Where’d he go?”

“Just left,” I say. “I texted him. Asked if he’d be here for breakfast. And he never texted back.”

“He’s just mad,” Bric says.

“I know.” I huff. “He told me that last night too. He spelled it out very clearly. He was worried about me. Sad about my leaving. But then when I came back—”

“Now he’s just angry.”

“Right.”

“It’s a pretty typical reaction,” Bric says.

“I realize that. Which is why I’m not going to make a big deal about this. But I don’t know if this is going to work, Bric. He might not want me. He might just want to hurt me. Exactly the way I hurt him.”

“No,” Bric says, like I’m being ridiculous.

“I’m not being ridiculous,” I say. “Maybe he’s not out to hurt me. But he’s doing something, Bric. He’s playing a game, but I’m pretty sure we’re not all playing the same game.”

“He’s mad, Rochelle. You have to expect that. He’s gonna come around.”

“What does that mean? Come around? Do you really think he’s gonna fall back in love with me the way he was? Because I don’t. I think he’s here for us. Me, you, and him together. And that’s all.”

Bric rubs his hand across his scratchy jaw as he thinks this over, so I check on Adley.  She fell asleep in the car on the way over here and hasn’t woken up yet. Bric is still thinking.

“I don’t want an us, Bric.”

He looks me in the eye and says. “I do. But I get it. And I’m fine with you and Quin getting your little happy ending. But I’m telling you, Rochelle, he’s just trying to protect himself right now and the best way to let him work that out and ensure you two get back together is to have an us.”

“He said he doesn’t trust me.”

“He has a good reason,” Bric counters.

“I know that,” I say, starting to get angry. “I understand that. But the whole point of us doing this… game… or whatever it is, was so that you can help me figure this out. I want him, Bric. You’re supposed to help me.”

But as soon as the words come out of my mouth I realize how stupid that is. I trust no one and I have very good reasons for that. I’ve learned over the course of my life that people are selfish. People are out for themselves. People are liars. I have a lot of experience in being lied to.

Elias Bricman definitely fits all those assumptions I have about people. And then some.

My Thoughts:

Drake is a very perceptive person.  He’s always known what he wants.  Hyun Song has her own personal guardian angel.  Her flashbacks are disturbing and you have no choice but to feel sorry for her.  It gets even worse when you think how she can stand in plain sight but is almost able to disappear – your heart will want to break.  There are also some pretty sick people that live in our world.

In a way this story is like a psychological thriller – once you’re in its grip there’s no use fighting it.  This is one of those books where it’s ok to put the book down and walk away because you know you’ll pick it up again.  It’s a story that goes back and forth time wise.  If it weren’t for the fact that the author lets you know whether you’re in the current time or gone back, it might get a little confusing.  Not quite halfway in and I still hadn’t figured out where the title fits in.

But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a very unique story and you keep reading because you want to know where our author is taking us.  She also lets the readers know the extent to which things went.  Verbal abuse was very hard to read – it certainly made me cringe.  Drake is so mysterious and creates plenty of questions.  You will begin to wonder about the amount of research that Ms. Wild must have gone through in order to make things seem so real.

This may sound strange but this story is like when you eat peanuts.  You eat one and you want more until you’ve eaten as many as you can without being sick.  You can’t just read one page.  You have to keep reading until you find that most perfect spot to stop.  The ending was happy?  I don’t know.  Just like with the rest of the book, it was unique.

Excerpt:

My breathing is shallow, ragged, as I silently watch her look up at me with those doe-like eyes. She’s magnificent, so innocent … so ripe for the taking.

I don’t know if she’s ready for me … but I can’t return to where we were before.

Her eyes are skidding across the room, and then they zoom in on me. Her lips part but no sound comes out … yet.

I place a finger on my lips and shush her softly, a devious smile lingering. I whisper seductively, “Don’t make a sound. We don’t want the neighbors to hear.”

I prowl closer, approaching the foot of her bed without taking my eyes off her. I feel like an animal, raging with hormones that beg me to fuck her. But I have to take it slowly, so I don’t scare her.

But as my knees touch her toes, she pulls them back, drawing the blanket back too. I can see her sucking in a breath when I lean over and place my hands on the bed.

She watches my every move as I hover over her legs, my mouth salivating from the mere anticipation of tasting her. Her bare feet are in front of me, and I bend over to kiss the top, my fingers softly sliding up her leg. Her skin erupts into goose bumps.

I bite my lip and kiss her ankle, gazing up at her to see if she’s still looking. I want her to see everything I do… everything she makes me do.

Just as I watched her, I want her to be a spectator now.
