Alex took the brush from her and set it on top of the open can of paint. “Do you dance?”

Now he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. Her eyes were wide as she studied him. She might have thought he was crazy, but she wasn’t pushing him away.

A few measures later, she finally lifted her arms and swayed with him.

“This is silly,” she chuckled shaking her head.

“Spontaneous,” he corrected as he pulled her a little closer. “It’s supposed to be romantic, right? Stopping what you’re doing and dancing?”

Her eyes went wide. “Are you trying to be romantic?”

“Am I not good at it?”

Catherine blinked and he could see her lip tremble. “I asked you first,” she said and her voice shook.

Alex slowed his sway. Maybe he was trying to be romantic. Maybe that was why he felt the need to show up at her house with flowers and wine.

He slowed even more, until they were simply standing in the bathroom—his hands on her hips, her arms around his neck.

“I guess I am,” he said looking down into her blue eyes.

Catherine swallowed hard and ran her tongue across her pink lips. “Then I guess you’re good at it.”

The ball was back in his court, he decided. He could let go of her and pick up the paint roller, or he could take the next step and see what happened.

Catherine’s fingers began to make circles at the nape of his neck, and now he trembled.

Lowering his mouth, until his was only a breath from hers, he stopped and locked eyes with her. Her baby blues were soft before they disappeared behind her eyelids, and he knew then she wanted the kiss he was contemplating as much as he did.

Things would come in dreams, and sometimes, they were just dreams. But when someone touched her, she would sometimes see things so vividly, as she had with Mrs. Winters. She’d been told once, by a psychic her mother had taken her to, that if the person who touched her was open-minded, Abigail would see everything. Someone who was closed off to the world wouldn’t let her see.

From then on, she’d tried never to touch too many people.

Close friends and family knew that if Abigail warned you about something, you took heed, especially after their grandmother’s death.

She knew when relationships weren’t going to work out. Or even when a customer was going to walk in the door and cause her day to go badly. It wasn’t ideal, but she could deal with it.

The reason she’d moved to Golden and opened the small tea house with her cousin was to get out of the small town she’d grown up in. Her gift had
become a nuisance and there were a few times she feared for her own safety.

Since she’d moved, she hadn’t had as many premonitions. That in itself was a gift as far as she was concerned. But once in a while, they still happened, just as they had today.

She didn’t want to know that the woman she’d served today was going to become ill after her birthday. Her time was limited. Mrs. Winters would succumb to Alzheimers, and she was already becoming forgetful. It broke her heart into a million pieces, because she’d found she very much enjoyed the woman. Perhaps the blessing would be if the woman never came back into the store, and neither did the man. But then that was a problem too. He was part of that premonition.

“So did you get some vibe on the old woman?” Clare asked as she turned to seal the container she’d made the egg salad in.

“Yeah. She’s going to become very ill this next year. She probably won’t make
it through the spring.”

“That sucks,” Clare let out a deflated breath. “I’d be wigging out too if I knew that was going to happen to someone. Even if they’re old.”

Abigail nodded as she set the tea pot on the shelf. “There was already some
sadness that loomed between them. They had a history.”

“Grandmother. Grandson.”

“Maybe. I guess I’ll find out.” Abigail sat on the stool that Clare used by the prep table.

“Why do you say that?”

Abigail felt her face flush with heat and her heart began to beat a rapid rhythm in her chest. She wiped her damp palms on her apron before she looked up to see Clare’s concerned face.

“Because that was the man I’m going to marry.”

Icy fingers of cold air pressed against Declan Matthews’ shirt as the wind blew through the trees. Once upon a time the wooded area, less than a mile from his childhood home, would have been a place of refuge. Now it was tainted with death.

The massive tree, which had been brought down by lightning at least fifty years earlier, still made for a perfect bridge over the cold brook that calmly passed beneath it.

Vaughn moved in beside him, just as an old friend would do, without a word.

Of course, that would only be the beginning of the women who refused to talk to him after a relationship ended.

Vaughn shoved his hands into the front pockets of his jeans and rocked back on his heels. “Christ, Declan. I don’t even know what to say.”

“There’s nothing to say.”

“I can’t believe something like this would happen here. Everyone knows everyone. Who could have done this?”

1. What are your inspirations?

a. I’m inspired by everything. I kid you not. The way the leaves look today inspires me as much as a single line in a song. Some days my kids inspire me with their knowledge, other days by the amount of messes they leave around. I’m a grand observer and inspiration is everywhere.

2. How did you come to write this particular book or series?

a. This series is greatly designed by my readers. When my last series, The Keller Family, drew to an end I asked my readers where the next family should rein from and what their name should be. That was enough to begin to create the Walker Family.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book, and how did you overcome it?

a. The hardest part in writing a book for me is staying awake to keep writing when the story is flowing, but my eyes won’t keep open. Yes, I’ve been known to write with my eyes closed. My kids think it’s a funny skill.

4. What is your writing drive? The power that keeps you going when your writing gets difficult?

a. Writing is my calling—therefore my drive as well. I can always find time to write even with life gets in the way. It is my special super power if you will—or my drug. I have to write every day to keep sane. Luckily, since it is my calling, writing never seems to be difficult for me.

~Eric Walker pulled up the collar of his jacket and let out a sigh. It was appropriate for the day to be gloomy, he thought. When you laid someone in the ground, it was fitting for it to rain or be down right cold, as it was today.

~As the road to the house tossed him back and forth he adjusted the dial on his radio. It was the kind of day for wallowing in misery with Hank.

~He’d wanted to see where she lived—how she lived.

It was an intimate peek into a stranger’s life.

Tucking his hands under his head, he wondered if it was so bad to want to know more about someone you just met. Maybe if he pried a little into her life he could forget the mess brewing in his own.

~Susan lifted her hands to his chest. She could feel his heart pound beneath her fingertips. When she lifted her eyes to meet his they were dreamy—lost—staring back into hers.

It was foolish to think that this man was going to be around for longer than a month. He was only warding off the week he’d had. She was his distraction.

Then he moved his head, lowered it to hers, and covered her mouth with his. Susan closed her eyes and inhaled his kiss.

Maybe he was equally her distraction too.

~Shifting a glance to her he noticed how delicate the skin was on her neck. It would be a damn shame to not press his lips to that pulse point just once.

The thought alone nearly had him light headed.

When she looked up at him and her eyelashes batted a moment before she licked her lips, he was gone.

Eric swiftly pulled her to him and took possession of her mouth as if his life depended on it.
