“We’re not broken,” she said softly. “Our parents’ mistakes don’t have to define us.”

It was the thought she clung to on her darkest days, when she looked at her father and wondered why she didn’t recognize him anymore. He was broken and she was the strong one, even if it didn’t always feel that way. If only she knew how to put him back together so they could be a real family again. So she could live her life.

“How are you so young and so wise?” He shook his head.

“I had to grow up fast.” She shifted so her head was resting on the headrest, facing him. If there was a way to pause time so she could stay in this darkened car, staring into Ronan’s eyes forever, then she would gladly do it. “I didn’t have a choice. Either I grew up or my siblings would have been taken away.”

That threat had loomed until Audrey was of legal age—when her father was repeatedly found washed up in some bar and she was home with the kids. She’d spent sleepless night after sleepless night wondering if Child Protective Services would show up and say her dad wasn’t fit to care for them. The day Audrey turned eighteen it was like a weight lifted off her…only she felt far older than her tender years, back then. She was an adult too soon.

“Don’t you wonder what life might have been like?” he asked.

“No,” she lied. Of course she wondered, but saying it aloud would be like opening Pandora’s box. Wondering didn’t help anybody.

“You’re a better person than I am.”

“I don’t know about that.” Her breath hitched. Energy crackled in the car, zipping between them like lightning bugs. The way he was looking at her had her under a spell, so intimate. So full of longing. “I think you’re pretty wonderful.”

Her words, thought quietly spoken, were like taking a hammer to glass. It shattered the restraint, shattered the reasoning holding them back. Ronan leaned forward, sliding his hand along her jaw and around to cup the back of her head. He was closer now. Their noses brushed and his lips parted, hers following in automatic, instinctual want. In animal need.

They hovered there for a moment, ready to drown in anticipation, and Audrey let her eyes flutter shut, blotting out the light. She wanted only to feel.

She hadn’t been kissed in forever. And while she knew it was wrong, she wanted to cradle that precious moment in her mind. It would be like a snow globe, a thought she could shake when she felt sad to watch it glitter and shine. And she refused to tar it with reality.

 “It’s the llama,” she whispered, her green eyes wide.

She said it with the same level of awe-struck, yet fear-filled reverence as if she’d announced that Satan himself had walked into the bookstore.

“A llama?” He raised a brow.

“The llama.” She sucked in a breath. “We only have one, our college baseball team’s mascot. She’s mean.”

“Aren’t llamas supposed to be all fuzzy and cute?”

Audrey made a scoffing noise. “No. You’re thinking about alpacas, which are sweet-natured little bundles of fleece and eyelashes. They wouldn’t hurt a fly. I love alpacas. But llamas…they’ll cut you.”

For some reason he had this vision of a llama wielding a butcher’s knife, Psycho style. “I’m sure you’re exaggerating.”

He walked past the rows of books. There was a startled yelp from the front of the store and something that sounded like a stack of books being knocked over.

“Stay back, Lily!”

Ronan glanced back over his shoulder at Audrey, who shrugged as if to say: it’s your funeral. He’d seen llamas before…well, not in person. Only in memes that his colleagues liked to send around occasionally. Then there was his friend who’d gone to South America and posted a bunch of pictures with him and the furry creatures to Facebook. They didn’t look that scary.

“Lily…don’t you dare!”

Ronan exited the aisle in time to see Lily, whom he could only assume was the shaggy beast taking up most of the space in the front of the bookstore—thus blocking the exit—nudge a pile of books, sending them toppling over.

“You confounding animal!” Mr. Hart was definitely wide awake now and shakily getting to his feet. He was protected by a large, heavy banker’s desk, complete with hunter green leather insert and matching lamp. “Go on, shoo! Get out of here.”

But Lily merely looked at him with the disdain of someone who knew they were in the position of power. She stretched up to her full height and Ronan gulped. Okay, so maybe she did look a little mean. And damn if she didn’t weight over three hundred pounds. At her full height, he’d guess her to be a hair under six feet tall, meaning she could look him right in the eyes.

“Don’t get too close,” Audrey advised from behind her barricade. “She—”

Audrey’s advice was cut short by the llama drawing her head back and spitting right in Ronan’s face. The moisture hit the side of his cheek, as instinct had made him turn his head, and now it was sliding down to his jaw in a soggy, slow trail.

“She spat in his face!” Mr. Hart shoved his glasses back up his nose and made a sound that could only be classified as chortling. Unabashedly gleeful chortling.

Ronan dragged his hand across his left cheek, unsure whether that made it better or worse, because now his arm was sticky, too. “Score one, llama.”

Audrey cocked her head. “You know, we’ve been warned about people like you.” “People posing as professors.” She waggled her finger at him and made a teasing, tutting sound. “Posing?” Ronan literally studied the very things which made people who they are—the very fiber of their motivations and morals. He would never scam someone. But this wasn’t the first time someone had questioned him because he was younger than average. “I’m a professor at Harrison Beech College. I don’t have my faculty card yet, that’s all.” “You really thought you could get one past me by trying to look the part?” She shook her head. “The elbow patches were a good attempt, but don’t you think they’re a little cliché?” Now she was insulting his fashion choices? He blinked. “What’s wrong with elbow patches?” “It’s like you Googled ‘what do professors wear?’ and then bought the first thing you saw.” She bit down on her lip as if stifling a laugh. Everyone was looking at him now, but Ronan had always been impervious to embarrassment. Maybe it was years of growing up with his Irish grandmother who was as blunt as a hammer. Although he had Googled that exact question on his first day as a professor in his late twenties. He’d been more insecure back then, feeling the age gap between him and his colleagues and his lack of life experience like a weight around his neck. These days he’d learned to hold his own, academically and personally. And he damn well liked his elbow patches.
