“I don't know who you are but I'm not your husband.”

My chest grows heavy, unable to withstand the weight of my broken heart. “W-why are you doing this?” I stammer, feeling as though I may pass out.

“I’m trying to help you. So, if you give my secretary your information, I can reach out to the authorities on your behalf and we can locate the man you're looking for.”

Bitter laughter escapes through my lungs. “That’d be difficult, since 𝙮𝙤𝙪 are my husband."

“That’s impossible.”

“Is this some kind of cruel joke? Do you hate me so much that you’d pretend you didn’t know me just so you can be done with me?” I dig a finger into my throbbing temple. “You’re killing me, do you understand that? You may as well take a knife and slice out my heart because this hurts worse than when I didn’t know if you were dead or alive.” Angrily, I swipe away at my eyes. “Because now, I realize you never loved me, did you.”

“Enough!” he roars, slamming a fist against his desk.

I jump a step, completely taken aback by the rage slithering through his features. His face twists as he shuts his eyes, his knuckles going white with how hard he squeezes his hand. And when he peers back at me this time, it’s softer. “I apologize, but you have to leave now.”

“What?” I gasp. “No!"

“I’m sorry you can’t find your husband, but I am not him. I promise you that. I’ve never been anyone’s husband. Now, if you’ll excuse me…” He presses some buttons on his laptop and ignores me.

My throat swells from the aching he put there. “I don’t know why you’re doing this, but I won’t let you,” I vow. “I’ll always be here to remind you.”

“Remind me of what?” His eyes find me then, filled with the same affection I once saw.

“That you love me.”
