Carter

She was the one for me.
The one that I knew would be mine forever until I made the biggest
mistake. I pushed her away and I’ve regretted that decision ever since. I’ve
tried to move on, tried to put the memory of her behind me, but she’s always consuming
my thoughts. Now, she’s back in our hometown, trying to rebuild a new life. I
know she’s keeping secrets. She tries to hide them from me, and I will do
whatever it takes to prove that I’m the one she needs. Because Shelby Ross is
the other part of me that I can’t live without and I refuse to let her go
again.

Shelby

He broke my heart.
I never thought I would be able to pick of the pieces he left behind.
When he let me go, I ran away from it all, thinking it was the easiest thing to
do. But, running has a price and I’ve paid it in full for years. Now, I’m back
where it all began, back to putting my life together and starting over. It
should’ve been easy, but Carter Harlow is reawakening long buried emotions that
I thought were gone. He wants to make me his again. I can’t let that happen. He
ruined me, broke me, and I’m afraid I’ll never survive it a second time around.

My Thoughts:

Shelby Ross seems so sad and seems to have the weight of the world on her shoulders.  Carter Harlow has regrets.  The author is great at building anticipation that makes it very easy to turn the page.  I have a couple of shoes I’m waiting to drop and a surprise waiting to happen.

That’s the point where I realized that this book was going to be a marathon read because there was no way I was going to stop until I came to whatever conclusion that the author has written.  If you haven’t read Caden yet that’s a good thing. Carter’s story introduces you to all the Harlow boys so this is the best place to start.

This may be a second chance romance but it’s not without a lot of ups and downs.  That includes how differently men and women see things – how we think differently.  We also see how clueless they can be when it comes to us.  But it was also fun to watch Carter squirm.  I loved watching all the boys interact with each other.  Even though they are secondary characters they are very important as to how well this story moves along.  I also loved their banter back and forth – one great way to show the love between siblings.  And I found it was worth getting this book read in one day because I got the best ending for this couple.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from Saints & Sinners and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

Trying to move forward with my life, I’m putting the past behind me. Surrounding myself with my best friend and work, I focus on living life the way I want. That’s until fate steps in and shows me something that I never knew I needed.
The encounter with Isaac was purely by chance.
The date with Conner was very much planned.
Both men give me more than I ever thought possible, and I’m beginning to realize that I could never live without them. Our relationship is unconventional, but nothing else matters now that they’re mine.
The only problem is our pasts refuse to stay where they belong.
Mine threatens to rip apart everything I’ve fought so hard to overcome.
Isaac and Conner’s threaten to take away the life we’re slowly building together.
Even with all the obstacles and doubts around us, nothing will stop me from protecting the ones I love.

Riley Blake is feeling frustrated and you can feel that coming off the page.  If you’ve ever been in that situation, you’ll know what she’s going through.  Cammie has a way of helping Riley get her emotions and other things in check.  What surprised me was how quickly their friendship changed.  Isaac Walton is able to turn an awkward situation around and it all happened with a little luck.  He’s both a smooth operator and fast worker but Riley doesn’t seem to mind.  Conner Davidson seems to be cut from the same cloth as Isaac and that’s not too surprising based on their history.

The further you get into this story you will need to decide if you need a window open or a fan handy because the steam heat that will be coming off the e-reader ~ mmm…  What I liked about Riley was that she owns her sexuality – she doesn’t try to hide it or make any type of excuses.  She’s very upfront about her preferences.  I will say that Isaac appears to need a little nudge in that department.  He seemed to expect Riley to figure things out on her own.  And because she’s the one telling us the story, you know that she’s curious and frustrated – and we’re right there with her.

Sometimes a lot happens in the first book of a series but here you won’t mind the length because everything flows nicely – especially since the author adds in a little mystery and suspense.  The book shows love in all its different forms so that’s something you have to decide if you’re comfortable with.  If you’re a reader that likes the twist and turns that an author can come up with than it may be one you want to check out.  If you’re someone that minds anything that isn’t vanilla than you will not want to have this in your library.  The ending when it comes will leave you hanging and wondering what’s coming next – hanging on by my fingertips.
