My Thoughts:

This story picks up where Distractions left off.  And just as the author states, if you haven’t read book one, you will need to stop and read that first.  A lot will be confusing if you try and cheat and read this story first.  You wouldn’t skip episodes of your favorite soap opera and you shouldn’t do it with this series.  If you like stories where lives are complicated then this is for you.

Gavin is having to say goodbye to Red for a few months.  We’re also introduced to Gavin’s sister, Lillian.  Isabelle (Red) has a traveling companion while she goes back to school.  Jake is someone that she already has a connection with – he is just one of the secondary characters to watch out for.  Red shows how tough it can be when starting a new chapter in a place that is far away from loved ones.

This is a story shows the sadness of those that are left behind while a loved one has gone away for a while.  Red’s start at college life turns interesting.  This just goes to show how creative the author is.  It’s a story that delves more into who they are as individuals when Gavin and Red are away from each other.  For me, the secondary characters stand out more than the main characters but it’s their interaction with Gavin and Red that make the story so interesting.

One interesting secondary character is Nixon – he is something of an enigma.  He was definitely one of the reasons that I couldn’t stop reading.  Another reason is that I felt that this book would stand up to any soap opera currently on TV.  Personally, I would watch this before watching any of the others.  If you’re a true soap opera fan, you do not want to be disturbed while your program is on.  The same can be said about when you are reading this book.  The story is left up in the air and the author doesn’t give you any hints about another book.

My Thoughts:

Isabelle’s feeling a little sorry for herself.  But her friend Gavin wants to change that.  Our author reminds her readers why exes are such dicks – pun intended.  She also reminds us how clueless some men can be well.  And then of course there’s the immaturity and the competitiveness.  It’s also about taking the step from friends to more then friends.

One of my favorite scenes was not a scene with sex in it but one where Red and Gavin go to the mall.  The way the author has written it, I can picture the whole scene playing out.  And after that it didn’t take me long to get hooked on the story.  Especially when I should have been outside shoveling the snow from the night before.  But I didn’t want to stop until I got to see what our couple was going to do.

Women in their twenties and thirties will probably enjoy this story.  Women over that may use this as a way of reminiscing about their own first loves and past boyfriends.  It’s a book that you can get read in just a couple of days, especially if you get into a reading frenzy.  The ending is left a little up in the air but that’s because our couple’s story continues in book two.  You will get a sneak peak at the end but can’t let you know when it will be coming out.  So you may want to follow this author so that if you liked this story and you want to continue reading about Red and Gavin, signing up for her newsletter is a good thing.

EXCERPT:

I sat back on the couch and took a deep breath. I had to keep it cool. Drooling over Red while she’s still trying to deal with the bullshit from Wilson is not the way to go. I could still smell that vanilla body wash she loved so much, the steam from the bathroom carrying it out and swirling it around my head.

I dropped the controller and turned off the television. I could see the reflection of the living room lights on the large TV set, and I could just make out a sliver of light escaping through Red’s cracked door. I watched as a shadow moved in front of the door. I turned the TV back on. I didn’t need to that guy, the guy that I usually am. If she were someone I was trying to fuck, I would have walked back to her room and watched her dress. I would have waited until she had her panties and bra on; then I would have stepped into her room and peeled them off her body.

But, Red is my best friend and that’s it. How was I supposed to know that kissing her was going to set off fireworks in my head? I hadn’t meant to kiss her, not like I did. I had just meant to maybe whisper something funny to her, or pull her close and tell her to forget about him, but all that went out the window when I pulled her close. She’s always been so strong, so tough. I can see she’s hurting, and I just wanted to take that pain away. But then she looked at me, and I lost it.

Her plump, pink lips were calling out to me. Her face was flushed and her pulse was pounding in her throat. She was beautiful. She is beautiful. Now, because of one moment of weakness, I've fucked it all up. She’s skittish around me now, and I don’t know what to do.

I haven’t thought about Red as anything other than a friend in a long time. But the more I think about it, the more I like it. We get along great, she’s smart, she’s funny, and she puts up with me. But, she’s my best friend, and her brother would kill me. And, if things don’t work out, it would fuck everything up, royally.

You don’t shit where you eat, and I'm not going to fuck my best friend no matter how good she looks getting out of the shower.

I just need to get my shit together. Quickly.
