Derek McLaughlin is having trouble coping with something that he had no control over.  Hayden Hunter has a great job but it does pull at your heartstrings.  Because of that job, there are plenty of scene-stealers.  This is a great cuddle story and my have you wanting to adopt.  I also had a hard time not liking Hayden since we both watch the same tv show.

This is one of those stories where two people are destined to keep coming in contact with each other.  One thing that I loved was that Hayden is her own woman and that Derek doesn’t see a previous love every time they come into contact – a great way to show we can have that second chance.  Derek does seem to do the expected when he doesn’t feel like he’s worthy.  But he redeems himself when he acts the hero. 

One of my favorite characters is Michael – he’s a great friend to Hayden.  He will also have you laughing and if you need a laugh he’ll fill the bill.  I think you’ll fall in love with him too.  He shows that you can be friends with a man.

Don’t get comfortable with this story.  You may think it’s just a normal story of where handsome celebrity finds someone to share his life with.  Well you would be wrong.  The author has put in a twist that will leave you glued to your seat.  She was very smart when she created this story because that twist doesn’t occur until much later.  Even though I was upset about this twist, it didn’t stop me from my reading to the end – got to know that everything works out for our couple.  It gave me faith that the author wouldn’t disappoint.  I was glad to see that another story is coming soon – his name is Luke and he is mentioned in this book.  So if you want to know what his story is, look out for Last Chance coming out next month.

Guilt plagued me and I felt sick. Getting out of bed, I paced the room, running my hands angrily through my hair. I didn’t want to hurt Hayden. Keeping her away would protect her from my life. She was bound to leave me anyway. I’d fuck up somehow and it would ruin her. What the hell was I talking about? I’d already fucked her up.

“Derek?” Her voice was like honey, silky and sweet. I’d imagined what it would be like to hear that voice screaming my name as I fucked her over and over. Last night had been the best night of my life, but it had scared the shit out of me. I couldn’t shake it. “Derek, are you okay?” she asked. Stopping midstep, I turned to face her, and her eyes widenened when she got a glimpse of my face. I could only imagine what she saw. So many emotions battled inside me. She held the blanket to her chest, and her lips trembled. “Please tell me this wasn’t just a game to you,” she whispered.

Swallowing hard, I sat down on the edge of the bed and reached for her. She recoiled from my touch. “None of this was a game, Hayden. Last night was fucking amazing.”

Her eyes glistened, but her jaw was firm. “Then why are you looking at me like that? Like you regret what we did.”

I wanted to touch her, but last night had been my only chance. She’d never let me close to her again. “I don’t regret it, but eventually you will. You’re not the only one who’s lost someone they cared about. I can’t go through it again. It’s best to stop this before it goes any further.”

“Any further?” she scoffed. She waved her arm around the room, her anger so thick I could cut it with a knife. “If you didn’t want it to go any further, then why did you bring me here? Why would you do that to me?”

“Because I care about you,” I said, knowing it made no sense to her.

“Then why are you pushing me away?” she cried.

Standing, I got up and walked over to the window. “You wouldn’t understand.”

My Thoughts:

Hawke Therrien gets a blast from his past.  Vale Campbell has a new job that puts her in a man’s world.  How many people can have a second chance at a relationship?  And be able to work for the same company.  Maybe you love hockey romances and maybe you don’t.  If you don’t, this book just may change your mind on that.

Now this author could leave the story where these two reconnect but she goes a step further and includes family.  Our author shows how sometimes our decisions are based on life’s responsibilities – and I know that from personal experience.  We also have to learn to move on.  We need to leave the past in the past – if we keep bringing it up it can ruin what we are trying to do in the present or even the future.

Vale had a reputation as a party girl but she shows that you can turn your life around.  Hawke feeds our conception of how a hockey player acts.  But if he didn’t act the way he does it might have changed how their new relationship evolves.  Currently hockey is being played so if you have the chance why not catch a game to give you some idea of what his profession is like.  Watching it on TV is not the same kind of experience if you were there live.

If you’re thinking road trip, you may want to check out the area where Hawke was as a teenager.  Now sometimes they play organ music as the hockey game progresses so you may just want to put on your music of choice.  This is a very hard book to put down so make sure you don’t have any plans once you pick this up.  I hope you liked this book as much as I did.  The author’s web site doesn’t say what the next book in the series is but because this is a stand-alone you can always go back and read the previous four books.  If you go out to GoodReads, you will find the name of the next book but not when it will be coming out.  I can’t wait!
