About Unquiet Dead:

In Chiaroscuro it’s important to keep the faith.

When the Temples north of Chiaroscuro are burned and followers of the Sun Goddess are murdered, Catherine, a bard of the Ealdoth Temple, sets out to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. With only the help of a traveling group of minstrels and a retired fae investigator, Catherine must solve the mystery before more people are killed.

So saddle up your clockwork mount, buckle on your electro-dagger, and join Catherine as she finds herself pitted against members of her own Temple, rogues members of the Seelie Court, and a seemingly unstoppable army of undead.

Devyn shook his head. “If you are going to stop this undead plague, you are going to need unity—all the help you can get. You and the Temple cannot stand by yourselves against necromancy.” Perhaps his voice cut too sharp from the look Merci gave him.
“The representatives from the Seelie Court have already shared an official report on the fires with the Hylteres. I found it…remarkably lacking in detail.”
Devyn sighed. “I know that the three Temples to Donma north of Chiaroscuro were set on fire and the humans inside worshiping, or those who came to fight the fire, died. It’s speculated that those humans were turned into the undead that now fill the countryside. Someone brought them back, and I wager that someone is still around, still making plans.”
“You could not discover more information? You cannot tell me no fae of either court investigated at the Temples.” She rolled the stem of the wine glass between her fingers, the liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim.
“I do not know the extent of my people’s investigation. I know what has been shared with the general members of the Seelie Court. To ask for more information from any of Risdanver’s councilors would not be wise. It would place my actions under scrutiny from both courts.” He laughed. “You may actually know more than I do at this time of my people’s involvement from those Official Reports.”
“And you didn’t think to visit the Temples yourself?”
“No.” He shook his head emphatically. He had little taste for these adventures now, although he had enjoyed them prior to the death of his wife and daughter. “Risdanver released me from service years ago. I have no wish to resume it.”
“You can travel there more easily than any of my agents. And I would wager you could find the remnants of a fae-tinged spell quite readily.” Merci’s dark eyes burned. “So why would you not investigate on your own?”
“I am not an official court representative. Not anymore.” An image flashed in his mind of his daughter’s final days, of holding Shela in his arms as her last breath rattled in her throat. Devyn walked over and placed his hands on Merci’s shoulders. “Understand that I am not getting myself killed for you, for the humans, or for the Seelie Court. My loyalty does not extend that far.”
