Brandon, the newest member of Levi’s team, heads to Africa and Bullard’s aid. Bullard purchased a new holding and went missing within a few days of his arrival.

After working for Bullard for five years, Kasha knows most of Levi’s team. Brandon is new to her though, but not for long. He is instrumental in planning her boss’s rescue and seems to always be at her side in the ensuing days as they determine the mess Bullard has accidentally stepped into – a gun running deal gone wrong, the holding coming under attack. Emotions, heightened by danger, run strong as Brandon positions himself instinctively at Kasha’s side.

She doesn’t need Brandon’s protection but loves being with him. Yet if they want a future together they have to find a way out of this mess before they join the bodies stacking up outside…

My Thoughts:

Brandon Horton hasn’t been on the job long but it looks like he’ll be learning his job hands on.  Kasha Lowry is a strong woman but she’s not above doing what her boss tells her to do.  Her boss, Bullard, is something of a mystery.  I found myself wanting to know if he has appeared in previous books or will appear in a future book.  I had the same feeling about Ice.  The author was very good in not letting those two overtake the true story between Brandon and Kasha.

Expect the action to start right from the beginning.  The author is very good at building her story first before she attempts to build any type of relationship between her main characters.  That has me questioning what her plans are for them as well as the reader.  I also had to wonder about the amount of research that was involved here.  The whole thing just seemed so realistic, which takes a lot of work.  Having not been in the military, I rely on the author to give her characters enough so that I can picture them as having the experience needed to perform their jobs.

It was very easy to immerse myself into the plot.  It was also a reminder of what I like about this series.  Each book can be read as a standalone.  In a lot of series, you need to read the books in order so that you can get the full affect of what the author has created.  With this series, each book is an individual story so if you start here you won’t feel lost in any way.  But if you really like what you’ve read then at some point you’ll want to spend the time checking out what you may have missed.  Usually an Epilogue ends the story but not here. All it does is get you ready for the beginning of the next book in this series.
Excerpt:
The officer raised his eyebrows. He laughed and said, “Good. In that case let’s get you over to the holding so we can take possession of the weapons.”
Bullard tilted his head to the side and said, “Who sent you?”
The man said something, but Brandon didn’t understand.
Bullard shook his head. “Try again,” he said.
The military officer straightened up, and anger crossed his face. Brandon realized what was going on. Bullard’s contact may have sent these men, but that didn’t mean these men had any intentions of following Konrad’s orders.
Tucked in the house behind them, Levi had his phone in his hand. He was talking and taking photos. Bullard was trying to keep the officer talking as they figured out what was going on. Then finally Bullard nodded, pointed toward the holding and waited till the first vehicle passed.
At that point, Bullard and Levi ran for their wheels. Brandon wasn’t sure what the hell was going on, but men were going everywhere. He got back into his truck and drove around to where Levi loaded up his men in the other truck with Bullard. When Levi jumped in the truck with Brandon, he asked Levi, “What the hell’s going on?”
“This is the team supposedly sent by Konrad, Bullard’s contact,” Levi said. He turned and gave Brandon a hard glare. “While Bullard trusts Konrad, he doesn’t trust any of these guys. Ice knows they’re coming. We’ve also got a phone call in to Konrad. I highly suspect these guys will take the weapons and run.”
“Do we stop them?”
Levi snorted. “Welcome to the law in this country. That’s a decision we may not get a choice about.”
Brandon turned on the engine again and headed toward home. Kasha was there with the prisoners. No way in hell he wanted her to meet this lot alone.
