Danny Begay has tried to drive out the voices of his ancestors, but his Navajo roots will not die. Summoned back to Arizona to visit his dying grandfather, a former Navajo Code Talker, he knows he has disappointed his hero grandfather. He buries himself one more time in the arms of a stranger before going back to Northern California.
Luci Tohe teaches at a reservation school, safeguarding the health of her ailing mother and little sister’s future, her own life on hold. She doesn’t expect the young Dine warrior she meets to be anything but a distraction from her loneliness.
Danny decides to join the Navy, as a SEAL, becoming the man he knew he was destined to be. Before deployment, he goes back to visit the girl he cannot get out of his mind. A dangerous human trafficking element threatens Luci and her family. Danny vows to protect them all.

Danny Begay is a young man with a Native American heritage. When he’s first introduced to the reader he has one foot in his world and one foot in ours. Luci Tohe is looking for something but will she find it with Danny? They also share something in common. By creating this commonality, the author has the reader wondering where it’s going to take them.
A reader may assume that these two are a couple once they first meet but the author goes in another direction. It’s a great way to grab your attention because you want to see where the characters will lead us. I had to go have my car worked on and this was the perfect book to take with me. You know when you have to sit in that little dinky waiting room; there are just so many distractions. What better way to not think about what’s being done to the car than to read a book?
One thing that drew me to this book is Danny’s Native American heritage. I have a very small amount myself and have always wondered if I have any relatives and would they experience some of what Danny has. On top of that he’s military and to go one better his grandfather was also in the military. Too bad this wasn’t required reading when I was studying American history – I might have enjoyed it a whole lot better.
Only you can decide what you’re going to take away from this book. Are you ready to read more? No speed-reading, no skipping around and you’ll go on a reading adventure that has a very steamy ending. And then if you can’t get enough, stop over to the author’s web site and see what else she has for her readers.
