Newly divorced Tessa Hunt is determined that last night’s bad decision is both the first and last of its kind. Unfortunately, that bad decision wears a cowboy hat, has a killer smile, and somehow managed to undo years of damage to her ego in just one night. She’s more than tempted to keep him in mind for future rendezvous, but in her heart, she knows better. After all, he’s just a playboy like her ex, and definitely no good for a serious relationship.
Cooper Dean’s night with Tessa is a wake-up call. Holding her had felt different. Not like a one-night stand at all. And while he wants to see more of her, he knows he has to get his life together first. That means coming to terms with his grief over the loss of his wife, and rising to the challenge of fatherhood. His first task as a single father is to take his son to the first day of Kindergarten. Seems simple enough, until he finds out that his son’s teacher is none other than the lovely Tessa Hunt.
Now, the two neighbors are finding common ground in their concern for Cooper's children and their attraction to each other. But can Tessa open herself to trust again? Can this cowboy widower let go of his past and embrace the future with a new love?

My Thoughts:
Tessa Hunt got a proposition that she couldn’t refuse but has come
to regret. Cooper Dean speaks before he
thinks. He shows how hard it can be
sometimes to move on. This can be
considered a second chance romance. Some
may see it as an older woman/younger man but the age difference really isn’t an
issue – the years between them are really nothing to feel weird about.
Cooper really lets the reader see how tough a time he was having
dealing with his life. Our author shows
that it’s ok for men to show vulnerability.
The only thing they need to work on is opening up to women instead of
hiding behind a veil of bravado. And you
will come upon a scene where Tessa hits the nail on the head.
Our author creates some great secondary characters. Two of them are a great support system for
Cooper – and one can be a little pushy.
Two more help to create a connection with Tessa. Then we have a good friend to Cooper and
every time he would appear in a scene I had to wonder what his story was. The last one doesn’t really say anything but
she’s important to the storyline and she’s how we get to know Cooper the
man. And actually there is one more but
he’s such a jerk that I’m just glad that he’s fictional because if I could get
away with it I would give him a swift kick.
Besides the great characters, this author had me wondering why she
makes it seem so easy. Her story just
seemed so natural. She has an easygoing
writing style. You can picture every
scene as it plays out. It was easy to
picture myself being in the background. She
also got me to laugh. It was hard not to
when you can see Cooper always inserting his foot into his mouth. His mother-in-law also provided me with some
laughable moments. Ms. Ashby has been
writing for a while but this is the first book I’ve read. I can’t wait to see where this series is
going to take me.
Cooper stood, his forearm against the frame of the door. He’d obviously reclaimed his hat from the bar girl. It shadowed his eyes, but his smile was bright. “Can I come in?” he asked.
“No.” She fidgeted in panic with the drawstring on her pajama bottoms.
“Aw, come on, Tess. You left so early, and I was wanting to ask you to dance. It’s just you stuck close to your friends, and I was afraid of being rejected in front of them. Nothing worse than a gaggle of women laughing at you.”
“Your ego would bounce back. I doubt you receive that many rejections.”
“As a matter of fact, I don’t,” he said. He swept the hat off his head and took a step toward her.
Not wanting him to enter uninvited, Tess moved to block him, which ended up placing her body mere inches from his.
He pressed his lips together, looking frustrated. “I just want a date. One date.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Why?” she repeated with a laugh. “You of all people should know how a one-night stand works.”
“It felt different with you.”
“It wasn’t. You slept with me because of proximity. I happened to be there, and I happened to be drunk.”
“Tess, I slept with you because my cute neighbor who has never given me the time of day in the nine months I’ve known her, finally fell for one of my stupid lines. And you can quit kidding yourself—you weren’t that drunk and you know it.”
There was lipstick on his jaw. He smelled like beer. He could be Ian from fifteen years ago. Really, from an intellectual standpoint, saying no wasn’t that difficult. “I know your type, Cooper.”
“Maybe you do, but you don’t know me. This--this isn’t me.”
She snorted. “Yeah, I’ve heard that line before.”
