Mitch and I stride up the stairs leading to the upper
level of the apartment. I swing a right into the kitchen, fling open the fridge
door, swipe a bottle of wine and two glasses, then head up the fire escape
stairs to the secluded rooftop oasis.
“Should you really be stealing your aunt’s, wine?”
“She probably won’t even realize it’s gone.”
While I’m at the sound system, plugging my iPod into the dock, I see
from the corner of my eye Mitch spreading out blankets on the daybed. He’s so
sweet. I search for a track to start shuffle. Perfect. “Never Tear Us Apart” by
INXS, a good Aussie band to introduce to Mitch.
The beginning of the song starts, a pulsating orchestra. I move over to
the daybed with two glasses of wine where Mitch is comfortably reclined. We
clang our glasses together in a cheer, take a sip. Then I lean down toward him
but place my glass on the bench beside the daybed instead of moving in toward
him.
Again, I move in a little closer to him as the chorus erupts, our faces
just inches from each other. “Two worlds colliding, and they could never, ever,
tear us apart …” The saxophone belts out the solo of the song. Our eyes, so
close. Mitch brings my mouth deep into his. I don’t ever want this moment to
end. He tastes still slightly salty and briny from oysters and fried onion
rings. His hand moves over my thigh and follows the line of my hips and waist
then trails up over my arm and shoulder. My breathing has become a succession
of short quick light breaths. One of his hands firmly clasps the nape of my
neck, the other softly padding my breast while he pulls my lips deeper into his
mouth then releases them. Tender, engorged, pulsating, our lips now barely
touching, his undulating breath cools the burning. I yield to him. I’m in limbo
and completely on the edge. Damn it, I want him so badly. He brings his hands
up to my face, firmly cupping my cheeks, and traces the very tip of his tongue
across the outline of my lips then kisses me deeply, like I’ve never been
kissed before. We are completely and utterly connected and, in my mind, the
only people in the world right now.
“Adeline,” he whispers, almost out of breath. “Fuck. You’re such an
incredible woman.”
I nuzzle my face into his neck and smell our scents mingling together
with the occasional waft of wine. A chill comes over me, and Mitch pulls the
covers of the daybed up and over the both of us as we lie there, our bodies
perfectly slotted into each other, shrouded by the wall of Manhattan
skyscrapers, safe and under a blanket of barely visible shimmering stars.
“Adeline. Adeline. Adeline! It’s a quarter to six. We need to leave by
six-thirty and you still have to finish packing. There’s clothes strewn
everywhere in your room.” Reggie’s voice jolts me back into reality.
