CAN’T HARDLY BREATHE Synopsis:
New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter returns with an irresistible Original Heartbreakers story about a woman who’s never felt desired and the man who wants her more than air to breathe…
Bullied in high school, Dorothea Mathis’s past is full of memories she’d rather forget. But there’s one she can’t seem to shake—her longstanding crush on former Army Ranger Daniel Porter. Now that the sexy bad boy has started using her inn as his personal playground, she should kick him out…but his every heated glance makes her want to join him instead.
Daniel returned to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma to care for his ailing father and burn off a little steam with no strings attached. Though he craves the curvy Dorothea night and day, he’s as marred by his past as she is by hers. The more he desires her, the more he fears losing her.
But every sizzling encounter leaves him desperate for more, and soon Daniel must make a choice: take a chance on love or walk away forever.

My Thoughts:
Dorothea Mathis may work with family but her job involves cleaning up after others. And she lets us know that it’s not always fun to work with them. She has a creative way at wearing her heart on her sleeve. Daniel Porter doesn’t quite behave as a bad boy should. The least endearing character would have to be Dorothea’s sister. At times I wanted to get into her space and ask what got stuck. But then you realize that there has to be a reason for why she’s acting as she is.Dorothea gives hope to those that have been bullied in school. She shows that you can come out in the end with a happily ever after. It may be a case of trial and error but it can happen. And it was interesting to watch her self esteem increase as the story progressed. I felt bad for her when she had to deal with her sister. In my family, I had three brothers and always wished I had a sister but after reading about Holly I’m almost glad I didn’t. She serves Dorothea a big serving of guilt and it made me wish I were there to defend her.
Daniel seemed to be the boy that all the girls crushed on in school – adds to an inflated ego. He surprised me though at what he would go through to catch Dorothea’s attention. The author does a great job of creating sexual tension without writing the actual act. It’s a great way to tease the reader and have them turning the page. That and what Daniel was going to do next to try and grab Dorothea’s attention. We see Daniel mature and watch as he realizes that women are more than a sexual outlet. It was as if they needed each other in order to change and grow into the person they wanted to be. The ending comes with a teaser for the next book in the series that left me adding it to my TBR list.

ReplyDeleteThe Darkest Night is my favorite, it was the first book of Gena's that I read, and started my addiction to the Lords of the Underworld series.
