“How about instead of going to the game, you come to the bar with us?” Sarah asked.

“I already have tickets, and I’m not wasting them.” At least not wasting one of them.

Sarah rolled her eyes. “You get tickets for free because of your job.”

“So?” That didn’t mean she should waste the chance to go. “I do have to keep tabs on the players.”

“Would you happen to be looking to hook up with one of those players?” Sarah folded her arms. “Some of those soccer players are pretty hot.”

“Baseball players are, too.” She shouldn’t have said that. “But they’re like other guys. They find out I’m a sportscaster and want things from me that I can’t give them. I don’t seem to find any decent guys. I meet athletes who want to get noticed and drunks who spill things and also want to get noticed.” She’d been kissed three times because she’d been caught on the kiss camera. Why did the person running the camera insist on putting her on the spot? The guys who’d kissed her weren’t attractive and none had her permission.

“I need to find someone for you for the spell,” Sarah said. “There has to be someone.”

“Hi.”

She flinched, then put the stick of deodorant down. “Sorry. You startled me. Was lost in my thoughts.” She faced the man speaking to her. Jack clasped his hands together and the lopsided half-smile curled on his lips. “Jack.”

“I didn’t mean to scare you. You looked like you were in the groove.” He remained in his place.

“How are you?”

“I’m good.” She leaned her elbow on the box and turned her full attention to him. “You found me.”

“You mentioned the store,” he said.

“I did.” He’d been listening? Nice. “How are you? Did you have a long night?”

“Long enough,” he said. “Didn’t have to throw anyone out.”

“That’s a plus.” She wasn’t sure what to do with her hands. Part of her wanted to reach out to him. The rest of her had to remember she was in public and at work. “Are you shopping? Can I help you find something? We just put a bunch of new stock on the shelves. I can help you if you’d like.” She needed to stop talking. “Sorry.”

“Why?”

“I don’t always know when to stop while I’m ahead.” She cleared her voice to sort herself out. “May I help you find something?”

“Not exactly.” He squeezed his fingers. “I have a question.”

“Sure.” She stood upright and tucked her hands into the front of her smock. “What can I do for you?”

He sighed and his fingers trembled. “I signed up for a cooking class tonight.”

“Very nice. I’d love to try those. I’m a terrible cook, but I’ve never been brave enough to sign up for a class,” she said. “What are you going to learn to make?”

He tensed, but dipped his head slightly. “Salmon steaks and roasted potatoes.”

Her stomach rumbled. She hadn’t realized she was hungry until now. “Sounds delicious.”

“It does.” He squeezed his fingers again. “Would you like to join me?”

“At the class?” She hesitated. It almost sounded like he’d asked her out on a date. Sort of. “Tonight?”

“If you’re busy, then don’t worry about it.” He closed his eyes. “It’s okay.”

“No, I’d like to go.” She touched his hand. The sparks shot from her fingers to her heart, then to her pussy. The man had a quiet strength and stability about him. “Sounds like a great time.”

“Why don’t you get a boyfriend? Let him film you. I know a guy who’d be perfect for you,” Erik said. “He’s quiet, sweet, and loves the law. His name is Francis and you’d love him. Francis and Roy has a good ring to it.”

He loved his brother, but this pushiness annoyed him. “I’m good. I don’t need to be introduced to anyone.” Besides, he’d met Francis and wasn’t a fan.

“You’ll like him.”

“I’m fine.” How many times did he have to say that?

“You need to stop being picky,” Erik said. “You’ll price yourself out of the market and be lonely.”

“So? There’s nothing wrong with being picky. It means I know what I want and won’t settle for less.” He stopped pacing. “I need to go. I want to take Raphael home before I go to Dye Hard Style. I’m supposed to show work at Crush Gallery tonight and want to look my best.”

“You can’t take Raphael there? James won’t mind.”

“Maybe not, but Raphael would rather go home.”

“If you’re seen out walking Raphael, maybe you’ll attract a man who will love you and can stand your cat. If he doesn’t know you have a pet, with your luck, you’ll meet a guy who hates cats. Then where will you be?”

“Besides confused by your statement?” He pinched the bridge of his nose, then began to clean up the studio. “Love me, love my cat. No budging. Speaking of not budging, the mayor still wants that painting? I’ll leave it by the door for you to pick up. You can deliver it to him since he likes you more. I need to go, okay? I made the appointment for five and it’s a quarter after four.”

“Is it because James has a dog? I hear he got a dog.”

“Which is why I’m taking Raphael home—another reason why. I need to go. Is there anything else?”

“Nope. Have fun. I’ll get the painting to the mayor, but you need to do something interesting and put it online,” Erik said. “Film yourself.”

“Right.” He hung up on his brother. Why did Erik have to be such a pain in the ass? He affixed the walking harness and leash onto Raphael after he finished putting his brushes away. Once he tucked his keys, wallet and phone in his pockets, he turned off the lights and locked up. He headed down to the street.

People seemed to like watching him walk Raphael. How many people walked their cat? Not many.

He and Raphael crossed Memorial Park to his apartment. He took Raphael inside and ensured his water was fresh. He filled Raphael’s bowl with kibble. If Raphael wasn’t happy, then neither was he.

“Are you good?” He took the harness and leash off Raphael. “I’ll be back, okay? I’m getting a freshen up.”

He watched Raphael eat. “You’re a good boy. I wish I could find the human that liked me in the same way. Then I’d get Erik off my back and I might not be so lonely.”

James plunged the comb into the blue solution and his scissors into the sink. He wiped his hands. “About your dating situation…go to Club Jester on Friday at nine. Dress like you, but be casual. I want you to meet my friend, Summer Rain.”

“A girl?” He’d never heard of anyone named Summer Rain.

“No, he’s a guy.” James removed the cape. “A great guy who ticks your boxes.”

“Named Summer Rain?” It seemed like an odd moniker for a man.

“Yes, and trust me. I have the golden touch.” James picked up a tablet. “Do you want a two-month appointment or six weeks?”

“Six weeks.” He set up his next slot with James, then offered his credit card to pay. “You said nine on Friday night?”

“Yes. Club Jester. His name is Summer Rain. It’ll be great.” James swiped the card. “If you don’t hit it off, then the next appointment is on me.”

He had nothing to lose. “Okay.”

“You’ll be meeting your destiny.” James handed him back the card. “Plus, you look fierce. Any man would be nuts to pass you up.”

He wasn’t sure he believed James, but why not? “You’re right.”

“I know I am.” James winked. “Feel better?”

“I do.” Almost like he could conquer the world. He handed James a twenty as a tip.

“Then there we go. Thank you and I’ll see you in six weeks.” James grinned. “Maybe I’ll have named the dog by then.”

“I’ll bet you do.” Maybe he’d find love by then, too. It couldn't hurt to try.

SMALL TOWN PRINCE CHARMING
by Megan Slayer
GENRE: Contemporary Erotic Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blurb:
Can a high school romance that never happened have a second life in a small town?
Tracey Baker got out of Blakes Creek to find her purpose in life. She found it in the theatre scene in New York, but after ten years, she’s ready for a change. Working for the community theatre in her hometown is just what she needs—until she sees Ryan Greene.
Ryan Greene crushed on Tracey Baker in school, but he never thought she’d come back to Blakes Creek. When he sees her at the theatre, he’s determined to win her heart. His daughter Maisey is just as determined. She likes Tracey and sets out to prove her dad is Tracey’s Prince Charming.
Love might conquer all, but with the eyes and ears of the town focused on their relationship, Ryan and Tracey will have to prove they can set the stage alight together.
“Ryan?” Tracey held a clipboard and one of the glittery chorus girl dresses. “Do you have a second?”
“I do.” He’d rather run. “How are you?”
“I’m good. Busy. You seem busy, too.” She smiled. “You’re doing well with the sets. I can’t wait to see them in action.”
“Thanks.” Was he blushing? The tips of his ears burned. “The costumes looked good. I haven’t seen them all, but I bet they’re great.”
“Oh, they’re not done yet. I still have to get everyone fitted properly and figure out where to add more glitz like Derek wants.” She fiddled with the garment in her hands. “I wanted to talk to you about Maisey.”
“What did she do?” He steeled himself for her answer. Maisey could tell tales and made things seem worse than reality. She craved attention, too.
“It’s not anything she did.” Tracey left the stage and strode out to the audience. “Here. This is less invasive. No, it’s what happened.”
“What happened? Did she try to set us up? She thinks I need another wife.” Shit. He shouldn’t have said that. “Sorry.”
Tracey paled. “Another? How many have you had?”
“One. Carol. It didn’t work out.” He shook his head. “Honestly, I’m not looking to date anyone.” He could be convinced if the right woman asked him on a date—like Tracey.
“Uh…she didn’t say anything about a date or a wife.” Tracey fumbled with the dress and perched on one of the seatbacks. “No, she was wearing another girl’s costume because the other girl wanted Maisey to be able to dance in the performance.”
He wobbled onto the seatback one aisle behind hers. “Come again? Maisey did what?”
“Maisey wants to dance, and she’s in the class showing she can do it. One of the girls, a friend, gave her the wrong costume—the friend’s—so Maisey wouldn’t have to pay for it and could participate. I asked Maisey, and she said her dad couldn’t afford for her to dance.”
He had to be honest, but he hated the embarrassment. “I work two jobs, and I don’t have the time or money for dance. I barely keep us fed.” He tried to hide his shame. Tracey didn’t need to see him upset. If he hadn’t been saddled with Jessica’s debts, he’d be better off.
“Do you mind if she takes part in the recital?” Tracey asked. “I saw her practice with the other girls, and she’s good. She deserves to dance. She’ll have a costume, if you’ll let her, since I took her measurements. Actually, she’s already got one.”
“How much?” He’d have to shuffle a few things to find the money, but he had to give Maisey this.
“Nothing.”
