“What’s our next step?” Erin asked in a low voice.

Pausing in the ballroom doorway, Braden leaned in as if nuzzling her ear for a moment, camouflaging his mouth by her long, wavy hair. “I’ve just received a secure communication from my team who are standing by. We don’t have enough information to go on yet, but they have sanctioned the release of a million-dollar deposit to prove our interest in the art piece and give us a chance to look at it.”

“We need to win that bid. But we have to examine the Winter Egg up close. That’s the only way to tell if it’s a copy or the genuine thing. I think both our bosses will be incredibly angry if we give Donnelly a million bucks and it’s a forgery.”

“Hopefully Donnelly’s guard up there is telephoning him right now.”

“Is your boss going to release the money to Donnelly right away?”

Braden shook his head. “They’re under instructions as my ‘bankers’ to verify the money is there and the wire transfer is all set up the moment we get the bid. Meanwhile—” Braden broke off when Charlene burst upon them once more.

“I just adore young love,” she gushed. “And weddings! And . . . did you know that you’re standing under the mistletoe right this very minute? And you know what that means, you two lovers!” She clapped her hands in delight.

Erin gave a start. What! Mistletoe

She tilted her head back and stared up at the door frame. Shock reverberated in her chest. Sure enough, there was an enormous bouquet of green mistletoe leaves and clusters of white berries hanging over their heads.

Marie never expected to wake up in North Pole City, let alone being made Santa’s Emergency Replacement. It was a job she never wanted but couldn’t turn down, thanks to Clarence, Santa’s right hand man.

Now, Marie has to work with Clarence, who believes she is some kind of criminal who will cause the destruction of everything he holds dear. Trying to prove that he’s wrong, Marie keeps making mistakes that push them even further apart. It doesn’t help that she has a past she’d rather keep hidden. However, trying to keep her past where it should belong isn’t easy.

Just when Marie starts to feel like things are coming together, a madman with a bone to pick, and Christmas to ruin, threatens the whole of the North Pole Organization. Marie must rely on Clarence and her new friends to help her face her past before Christmas is gone forever.  But does she have the courage to truly be herself when it could mean losing everything?

Snippet:

It was dark as he ran down the hallways of the Main Office Complex, searching, hoping that what his heart and mind whispered wasn't true. There was no way it could be true. It had to be the worst lie imaginable, but it still sang through his veins. It felt like hot fear burning in a blazing inferno of mixed up emotions.
The radio at his side blared static, jumbled words that were unintelligible. Only the occasional call for haste filtered through. But, no matter how hard he tried to run, to climb down the many stairs, it felt like he was moving through molasses. It felt like he was moving slower and slower the closer he got to the ground floor. It looked like a war zone, with debris strewn all over. It was as if the place had been abandoned because of some kind of attack.

In one hand, he gripped the note he'd found on Santa's desk. The note explained where his friend had gone; even knowing that doing so might spell the end of his life. Why had Santa been so self-sacrificing? Why hadn't he asked for help? Clarence tried to run faster, trying to understand what had gone through the Head Elf's head. He hoped to arrive there before the unthinkable happened. He raced for the doors facing the Green and flung them open, bursting out into the light.

Loving The Book Presents: #Christmas #Countdown 2020; #NowAvailable, #OutNow, #TBR, #Live, #Giveaway

Arabella Sheraton grew up on a diet of Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, and many other writers of that period. From Jane Austen to Georgette Heyer, Arabella has found both enjoyment and inspiration in sparkling, witty Regency novels. She also loves history and generally finds the past more fascinating than the future. Arabella wrote her first Regency romance to entertain her aged mom who loved the genre. Arabella is honoured to share the adventures of her heroes and heroines with readers.

In this delightful traditional Regency romance, Miss Diana Dashwood accepts an invitation to Lady Prescott's Christmas party at Camden House, in the countryside. But things do not go quite as she imagined.

Through an unexpected event, she is forced to spend the night in a woodsman's hut with one of the guests. What a scandal!

Of course, Sir Gareth Blakely must propose, and he does. Unfortunately, Miss Diana Dashwood has already been engaged to and broken off her engagement from Sir Gareth Blakely after a bitter quarrel. Is it likely she will bow to social pressure and accept his proposal, one made only to save her reputation, and if they marry, does their union stand a chance of survival? And what about the pretty heiress, Miss Jemima Plymstock, whom everyone thinks is the lady Sir Gareth had his eye upon? Headstrong and proud, Miss Diana Dashwood is caught in a dreadful dilemma. A must-read for Regency fans!

Snippet:

Diana did not reply. She prayed that help was on its way. Would it come in time to prevent the marriage? She closed her eyes and tried to remain calm. Gareth’s face swam into her mind. His smile, his laugh, his witty, dry comments, his tastes which seemed so remarkably akin to hers—it could have all been so perfect. He pretended he did not know why she had broken their engagement, well, to be honest, had jilted him at the altar. Yet he had been so quick to announce their renewed engagement when they were discovered at the hut. He had not hesitated. Not a flicker of doubt. He seemed so confident about it as well. The fact he had brought the ring

with him remained a mystery. What man brought a ring to a Christmas party without planning to offer it to a lady? He did not seem disappointed he had not had the chance to offer it to Miss Plymstock. In fact, thinking more upon his relationship with the lady, Diana could see now that he had only been his usual courteous self. He had been polite and attentive to Miss Plymstock, but he had not singled her out for special attention. In fact, he had come straight to Diana upon her arrival and welcomed her.

The gift of peace of spirit that comes from restitution.

A year after Luke McDaniels broke away from the control of two eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain outlaws and freed Ling Loi from the Chinese brothel in Lundy, one aspect of their escape still plagues his conscience. Even though he made a point to take only what was owed him, and he left sufficient funds to cover the cost of anything he took from others without the owners’ knowledge or consent, there had been one exception. The second horse he planned to “buy” to assure a successful early winter journey was snatched away before his gaze. Another was left in its place. The ten gold half-eagles he allowed was less than the value of the one available to him. He hated short-changing the owner, but Loi, who took on the name of Joy when they married, had been his first priority.

Joy, grateful she has been restored to the way of decency, senses that Luke needs his own restoration. Can she convince him to do what he must to enjoy peace at Christmas?

Snippet:

Hank narrowed his eyes and jutted his chin in the direction of the man retreating toward the trees. “I’ve seen him before. It’s been a good year or better, but he stayed at the ranch one night. You and Val were gone on business. Frankie and I found him wandering around the north part of the property and invited him to join us for supper and to spend the night in the bunkhouse. He mucked out the barn in exchange for feed for his horse.”

His eyebrows raised, Luther stared at his friend. “You let someone part-Indian stay in the bunkhouse? How did the rest of men take it?”

Hank met Luther’s gaze and shook his head. “He was dressed as a white man. I can see the Indian in him now, but last year, none of us ever guessed.” He squinted at the retreating man. He jabbed his pointer finger. “One thing I do recognize is that tomahawk hanging from his belt. He told us he bought it off an Indian. Now, I wonder what the real story is.”

A sweet and gentle love blossoms between Rebekah Stoll and her childhood friend Joseph Graber, despite attempts by her saucy nemesis, Katie Knepp, to sway the young man's affections her way.

Snippet:

As out of place as the cry was among the sea of death, Elnora recognized the sound in an instant. An infant’s cry. Eyes searching the terrain, her gaze fixed on a lone, scrubby bush. A wail pierced the air again. Tucking the English square deep into her dress pocket, Elnora reached the bush in a moment, her hands clawing and searching through the summer leaf litter. Finally, something warm brushed her fingertips.

Cradling the English baby in her arms, Elnora rose to face the throng of women who had gathered to witness the unfolding miracle. “It’s a girl,” she proclaimed.

Sarah Wagler’s mouth hung agape as she bounced Elijah absently on her hip, and  the other Amish wives and mothers from the wagon train allowed tiny smiles to creep onto their solemn lips. Even the men folk paused.

Elnora’s awestruck voice was uncharacteristically robust. “Not a scratch on her! Not a bruise, not a drop of blood!”

Heloise, toting wide-eyed Joseph in her arms, stepped forward to get a better look.

Elnora’s voice took on the soft shushing of a new mother as she rocked the squirming infant. “Hush now, sweet one. You’re safe now.”

“You’re a natural,” Heloise observed, a twinkle in her eyes. “Look how she’s already calming. She feels safe.”

She is safe, Elnora thought, unable to tear her gaze from the tiny girl. Safe with me. Safe with us.  “Come,” Heloise whispered. “Get her to the wagon and out of this sun.”

Sarah fell in step beside her friend, her blue eyes also transfixed on the English baby. “It’s a miracle she wasn’t injured ... or worse.”

“I have extra goat’s milk that I boiled for Katie and Annie,” Katherine Knepp cooed as she and the other women joined them. “This little one must eat.”

Esther Odon nodded. “I have some girl clothes she can have.” Dinah Yoder placed her arm around Esther’s shoulders. The memory of Esther’s hard labor on the trail that had resulted in a stillborn baby girl was a raw one in all the women’s minds.

Tears pricked Elnora’s eyes. “Thank you. Thank you all.”

Day turned quickly to night as the Amish women fawned over the tiny infant that seemed to have come straight from heaven, leaving the men to finish the burials by moonlight.
