My Thoughts:

Anna Mari finds it hard to make and have friends.  Davis “Coop” Cooper is something of a puzzle.  I really wanted to see if I could figure him out but it took a long time.  But isn’t that why it’s called a puzzle?  I can see the suspense but on the fence about the romance.

The beginning was very hard to follow – at least where Anna is concerned.  It wasn’t until I got to chapter six that the light bulb finally went on.  If it weren’t for this review, I probably would have given up.  But the story started to pick up so I didn’t feel so lost – like a piece of the puzzle was missing.  I also felt that I needed to go back and read Blue again then start this book right after.

It shows that you just can’t like every book.  I loved Anna’s brother’s story but a lot of time has passed since I read it.  Going back just seems like a great idea to get the sense of family.  A sense of why she is so protected and will Coop change his ways.  A secondary character, Julian, was another reason that I wanted to keep on reading.  There’s a story there in itself and I want to know more.

It was very hard to feel any type of connection between Anna and Coop.  I felt there was more tension between her and Julian.  Her brother made a valid point while he’s talking with his sister and it’s something that I raised myself.  That being said, it made it hard to believe that this was a happily ever after story.  Also leaves me wondering what color comes next.

Eventually, I select a large canvas, so large, I can’t get it on the easel and settle for the floor. I strip my jeans, long sleeved shirt and slip my shoes off, donning the sizeable green smock hanging on the wall. And I paint. Losing track of time or space. Fully immersed in the colors, my vision, my emotion.
“Here you are,” Coop says from the doorway, and I twist on all fours in his direction.
He’s leaning on the door jamb with his arms relaxed at his sides, and his feet crossed like he has been standing there a while.
“How long have you been here?”
I’ve been painting for hours, my fingers tingle, my feet are numb, and my lower back aches from crouching and contorting myself into strange, awkward positions. I was oblivious to the cries of my body while working.
“A bit.” He pushes off the wall, nearing to help me to my feet.
I roll my neck and shake out my limbs before tilting my head to look at him. He smiles, his white teeth and twinkling eyes pop as he tucks a few strands behind my ear.
“You’ve got some paint on your face.” His finger slides down my check and then the side of my nose. “It looks good on you.”
Heat travels from the center of my chest outward, and I can’t help but smile, “I’m glad you think so.”
Gone is my anger or bruised ego from his departure last night. I don’t really know what I was expecting or wanting, and I’m glad to see him. I’m also happy to see that he’s more himself.
“What am I going to do with you? You have to stop disappearing on me.”
“And what? Make your job easier, not a chance.” I tease, treading lightly, all too aware of the kind of trouble my wondering off could cause.

GREEN Excerpt:

It’s the sway of her hips and mass of dark curls that catch my eye. She’s dancing at the bar while sipping a drink and leaning into some guy who is all over her. His hands bracket her waist, slowly inching down the curve of her ass.
She’s mine to protect. I charge like a bull, hot and agitated, yanking her out of his arms. Her drink spills over the guy’s shirt.
“Hey!” he yells, flicking liquid off his hands.
Anna whips her head to me, eyes wide and mouth open. “What are you…”
I lean in close and whisper, my tone thick, heavy and derisive. “This sex kitten act isn’t working for you, little girl. Stop making a fool of yourself.” I’m a damned liar, but I don’t intend to give that any thought right now.
“Get lost.” Her angry gaze lights into me, and she pivots toward the guy who is ready to take me on.
I grab her arm, wrapping her in an embrace while she tries to wriggle free. “We’re leaving.”
“Get your hands off her, asshole,” drunk college boy slurs, wobbling toward me.
“No, I’m not.” Her eyes narrow into a glower. “Leave if you want to. Let me go.”
“You heard the lady, let her go." The guy looks at her with a stupid face that he probably thinks is endearing. Instead, he's a jackass with puckered lips and crossed-eyes. “Hey baby, you okay?”
He paws her clumsily, and my patience snaps. “You touch her again, and you’ll lose your arm.”
He falters for a second, glancing down at my arms firmly banded around her and then back at me.
“Hey, man.” He raises his hands as if he’s staring down the barrel of a gun. “No disrespect, I didn’t know she was yours.”
“I’m not,” she grinds out, jabbing her elbow in my side.
I flinch but keep my hold on her and she releases a frustrated groan. The guy doesn’t give either of us a second look. He’s gone.
“Let me go,” she hisses. Ignoring her, I text Tango and Tommie to meet us out back.
Within minutes, I’m thrusting her into Tango’s arms and ordering them to take her home.
“Do not leave,” I stress, and Tango nods obediently.
Anna is fuming. Livid. Her nostrils flare and lips are tight while her eyes blaze. If looks could kill, I might be sucking in dirt. But I’ve gotta admit, hot and bothered looks good on her.
While completely uncalled for, I wink and flash my sexy grin– the one that has women falling at my feet–before turning my back on her. As I walk into the club, she curses a blue streak, and I laugh. My cock twitches, turned on by her spunk. Down boy, this is Anna. Off-limits no matter how tempting.

Rating:  4.5 Stars
Told in the first person.  Alternating persons.

Disclosure of Material Connection:  I received this book for review from Give Me Books and the author.  I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review.  The opinions I have expressed are my own.  I am posting this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255:  "Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising".

Blurb:

Blue. The color of devotion.

CARYS WOLFE is my heart.
Mine, always.
Leaving her nearly killed me.
I thought it was the only way to keep her safe.
She’s moved on, and I want her back.

***

EVAN HART is my heart.
Loving him is my destiny.
I waited my entire life for our time,
for us to finally be together,
only to have him leave.
Now he’s back.
Though my mind can’t forgive him,
my heart can’t forget.

My Thoughts:

Evan “Van” Hart has a right to be angry – I would be too.  Carys Wolfe gets the shock of her life – it will take time and patience to figure out if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.  She’s suffered a loss that hits home for me – especially since it’s only been a couple of months.  She shares that tragedy with Evan.  I hope that most, but it would be nice to say all but I can’t, will never have that type of pain.  It’s the type of pain that can affect you no matter your age.

It’s a sad way to start a story but in today’s world it’s all too common.  You keep reading because you want to see that sadness turn into hope and than hopefully love.  The author does a great job of creating tension between our two main characters - although most of it seems to be coming from Carys.  There’s a slight age difference but I didn’t find that it made any difference.  How many of you had a crush on your brother’s friend?  This takes that crush one step further.

Some may not like the fact that the story goes back and forth between the past and the present.  I found that it just added to the story.  We all have a history and don’t you read a story and sometimes wonder about a character’s past?  It’s a story that we need to hear but I don’t think I would have enjoyed the story as much if the past our author reveals was all done at the beginning of the book.  Evan and Carys show how much passion they have for each other and how that passion slowly developed.

Even though this is the second book in the Love In Color series, you could consider this book a standalone.  This author caught my attention long before I even got halfway through and that just means that at some point I will have to take the time and go back and read Red.  And once I got to the end of this book, I was happy to see that there’s another book coming out next year.  This is an author that will stay on my radar for quite a while.

Excerpt:

“Evan, I want to know what happened, but I have a life now and you need to know…” She trails off, her eyes darting away from mine.

“What?”

Gazing up at me, she continues, “Whatever you have to say, it’s not going to change a thing. We’re over.”

My heart twists and breathing becomes difficult. Mother fuck, her words cut deep, hurting even though they aren’t true. Sure, she believes them on some level—she had to, in order to get through what I did. Yet, along with the hurt and disappointment swimming in her eyes, there’s also tenderness and love.

“Tell me you’re happy and I’ll walk away.”

We always pushed each other, challenged the other to face our fears, to be honest with ourselves, with each other. I need to hear her say it. I don’t believe it, but if she is over me, I need to hear it in her voice and see it in her face—not because I want to, but because it’s the only way I can even begin to accept that we’re over. Even then, it’s not possible.

“I’m happy.” Her tone is laden with bravado, but no true emotion. Even her gaze, which never wavers from mine, is flat.

Shaking my head, I briefly cast my eyes downward to suppress my smile. “No, you’re not.”

“Van.” I flinch at that fucking name.

As a child, I thought it was so fucking cool to have a nickname that only my best friends would call me. Now, hearing “Van” from her pretty lips, I want to obliterate the word from her vocabulary, fucking kiss the word out of her.

“You can call me asshole for all I care, you’re not happy,” I retort in frustration. Catching my tone, I breathe deeply and loosen my fists to relax. “Don’t lie to me, and most of all, don’t lie to yourself.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about. You want to see what you want. I’m with Greg, and we’re happy.”

She grimaces infinitesimally, then averts her eyes from me. Unable to read her, I’m not sure if it’s because she means it and doesn’t want to hurt my feelings or if the lie tastes nasty in her mouth.
“Sweetness, I know everything there is to know about you, without apology. You can’t lie to me.”
