The moment I looked into his eyes, I knew I was in trouble.
The second I heard his name, I knew I should stay away.

Our fathers were mortal enemies—Chicago crime bosses from rival families.

But that didn’t stop Leo Conti from pursuing me.
Being together was dangerous, reckless, and totally hot.
He wanted me. I wanted him.

Nothing could possibly go wrong, right?

My Thoughts:

Daphne Gallo has an interesting family. Most of the time when I read a book that has alternating persons the chapters also alternate to reflect that. Our author though doesn’t do the expected. We get Daphne’s impressions first. Then once we get enough information, the author then gives us the opportunity to get Leo Conti’s point of view. He’s a man who doesn’t give up when he wants something.

This is the second book about a member of the Gallo family. You don’t need to know Lucio’s story in order to enjoy this one. But after reading Daphne’s interaction with her dad you may wonder what you missed. The good news is that this is only the second book in the series so you haven’t missed much. We also get to meet the younger Gallo brother. I loved his interactions with his older sister.

Don’t get me wrong I really liked this story but I felt it leaned more toward the Gallo family then the interactions between Daphne and Leo. I liked to see that our author created a good friend, Michelle, who seemed to be the voice of reason when Daphne needed it. But she also had the finger wave when she needed to. Most of all she will fight for Daphne’s happiness. One of the times I finally see Leo he is very adamant about is what he feels.

Our author gives the reader a real sense of family. Good, bad, or indifferent you can feel the love the Gallo’s have for each other. It had me remembering what our family was like when I was a kid. One thing that became important was mealtime because for the most part is was the time when we were all together. This was a story where I felt that I had to fill in the blanks because I got a surprise that I wasn’t expecting. But I had no trouble seeing the romance in the story – the love may have been a little harder to see but the romance shown through. It had me thinking of a contemporary Romeo and Juliet – as far as the family feud goes. And the difference between these families is that this story comes with a happy ending. In the next instant we’re left at the top of a cliff hanging on by a thread. Where will we go from here?
