Avery + Deck's Story

Single dad MacKenzie Decker was a question Avery never got to ask, much less answer.

They met when she was a young reporter fueled by ambition, and the ink on Deck's first NBA contract was barely dry. Years later, they've climbed so high and lost so much, but one thing hasn't changed. The attraction that simmered between them in a locker room before is still there. With success like theirs, everything has been possible . . . except them.

But that was then.

The only question is...what about now?

Quinn + Ean's Story

Quinn

I was a world-class runner once.

My dreams had wings spun from wind and speed.

Every time out of the blocks was a glorious flight.

But then I crashed and burned.

When I lost my leg, I thought it was the finish line

Little did I know, life was just beginning

Now they call me “America’s Titanium Sweetheart.”

(What can I say? It tested well. LOL)

The life I thought was over is moving so fast.

I have my own gym, a fitness app, a clothing line, and an endless trail of endorsements.

One thing there’s never time for? Love.

One thing I don’t have time for? Games.

Come real, or don’t come at all. In a field full of players, I’m looking for a real one.

Otherwise, I won’t stop.

Ean

I had hoops dreams. I wanted to be like Mike, jump like Magic and soar like Dr. J.

But a college injury grounded me. What I thought was game over, actually opened up a whole new world.

Fast forward to now. I’m coaching some of the NBA’s best.

They call me The Machine because I’m obsessed with stats and data, and my near-photographic memory means I remember every play.

I see the court clearly. But I never saw her coming. Quinn Barrow stops me in my tracks.

Pursuing my first championship, there’s been no time for love.

I’m more than willing to chase her, but will she slow down long enough to be caught?

My Thoughts:

This is set up as chapters but they’re mini novellas that catch you up on some of your favorite Montgomery’s.  Between each chapter are recipes that connect to the story you just read.  It’s a great combination and had me wonder why I haven’t seen something like this before.  I’ve seen books where the recipes come at the end but it’s summertime where I am and the way this book is set up is perfect.

If I only have a limited amount of time to read, reading one chapter gives me my quick fix and then I can go about my day or vacation.  Not sure of what I want to fix for lunch or dinner?  Hm, I can look at the recipes that highlight the story I just finished and I might have an appetizer, an entrĂ©e, or even a dessert ready for me.

We finally have access to fresh fruit and vegetables in my area.  Why not add some of that bounty to one of the dishes.  With the current grocery store issues you also may need to make substitutions in a recipe.  I had that with the loaded potato dip.  It called for waffle fries.  None were to be had at the store I was in.  And if you’re like me, I’m not going to drive all over the place, looking for an ingredient, so I worked with what the store had (and just a side note, the dip was also good with chips).

I loved catching up with all the family members in here and seeing what they might make to enjoy together.  It could become an incentive to go back and reread their beginnings.  Although this is not where you want to start if you haven’t met this big family before because you really don’t have a backstory – this is their present.  This was a great collaboration and I look forward to seeing if there will be any more like this in our/their future.

Keep reading for a look inside Montgomery Ink Bites Cookbook!

SPICE IT UP!

Luc

There were times when I knew exactly what to say. When I was ready to face the oncoming questions of being a father of four and to settle any problem that came my way. My kids were the center of my world, just like my wife.
Yet something was bothering my oldest daughter, and I could not figure out what it was.
And neither could Meghan, with the way that she kept looking at me as if I had all the answers. The problem was, I used to. I used to have those answers. At least it felt like it. But then again, so had Meghan. And now here we were, staring at each other as our teenage daughter grumbled something to herself, looking completely lost and angry at the world, and I didn’t know how to fix it.
“Sasha? Is there something that you want to tell us?” Meghan asked as she reached out and gripped my hand. I looked down at her slender wrist and wanted to pull it to my lips for a kiss. Only it wasn’t the right time, and I was afraid if we didn’t take a break from the necessities that were our life, we might not ever find that time again.
“Nothing’s wrong.” The clipped sound of my daughter’s voice split the air, and I let out a breath.
“Sasha. There’s got to be something wrong if you’re not talking to us.”
“Why do I have to tell you everything? I’m eighteen. I’m not a little girl anymore. I’m having a bad day. Maybe it’s just my period.”
“You talking about menstruation isn’t going to push me away from this conversation. It’s a new age. I’m not going to wince.”
“Ugh! Why can’t you be like any normal guy and just walk away as soon as I talk about anything girl problem related?”
“Because I have two daughters, a wife, and fifty thousand Montgomery cousins. Not to mention your aunts. You’re not going to push me away by saying those things. Talk to me.”
My daughter, who didn’t look a thing like me since we didn’t share a single biological gene, blinked up at me before she burst into tears. I cursed under my breath as my wife and I moved forward. We hugged Sasha close, helpless.
“Baby, talk to us. What’s wrong?”
“I’m fine,” Sasha bit out as she leaned into us.
“You just burst out crying, and you’re angry for seemingly no reason. There’s got to be a reason.”
“Fine. Marcus dumped me.”
I blinked and looked back at her. “I thought you and Marcus were just friends?”
She rolled her eyes, let out a huff. “Dad.”
“Don’t Dad me. When did you become more than friends? How could he have broken up with you when you weren’t dating?”
“Luc, darling, one thing at a time.”
“I think this is the same thing.”
“Oh, so you’re fine with talking about menstruation, but suddenly I talk about boyfriends, and you freak out like a dad from the ‘50s?”
I pinched the bridge of my nose and waved Cliff off.
Cliff was sixteen and nearly as tall as I was, and his eyes were wide. He put his hands on both Emma’s and Benjamin’s shoulders.
As Benjamin was eight, and Emma was ten, they had an inkling of what we were talking about, so therefore my eldest son seemed to read my mind. He pulled the kids away, and out to the backyard where hopefully he would watch them for a minute while I figured out what the hell was going on with my oldest daughter.
Meghan and I had been married for over a decade now. We had been through hell and back multiple times, and I still felt like I was sometimes scrambling when it came to my kids.

About CAN’T MISS CHRISTMAS:

Finding love again is the best Christmas present of all.

It’s two days before Christmas and bestselling children’s author Grace Alberts needs to fulfill a promise—to make it to a book signing for the kids at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the place that did so much for her during a very rough time. But the weather’s getting awful and all flights are cancelled out of Boston, where she’s wrapping up her book tour. Then in walks her annoying but extremely sexy ex-husband, who (as usual) thinks he’s got all the answers.

Graham Walker just stopped by to get a book signed for Grace’s biggest fan, his niece, and wish Grace a Merry Christmas—why not? But he soon finds himself troubleshooting her dilemma. He’s got a Range Rover that can plow through a hundred-year Nor’easter. He’s even headed home to Philly. Trouble is, Grace's and his past is a disaster, something he has no intention of reliving while driving through a winter storm, no matter how much he once loved her. And maybe still does.

Bad weather has a way of bringing out the best and the worst in people, and when a run in with some deer antlers leads them to a forced stop in Mirror Lake, Connecticut, anything can happen, naughty or nice. Maybe a bit of enforced alone time and some Christmas magic can be just what it takes for them to face their past—and each other—once and for all.

My Thoughts:
Graham Walker is remembering times gone by.  Grace Alberts has a job that I wish I were creative enough to do.  But can it replace what she’s lost?  It didn’t take me long getting drawn into this story where our two main characters have history.

Now that Halloween has come and gone we are on our way to the busiest time of year.  Sometimes it gets hard to find the time to sit down and read a book.  This is what is good about reading a novella.  You don’t need a lot of time to get the story read and can still have time to get other things done.  It also gives you a moment to slow down and enjoy something that’s going to take you out of your world for a little while.  But as you sit and read you may want to keep some tissues handy.  A tragedy tore our couple apart but it also had a way of bringing them back together.

I have not read any of this author’s Moon Lake series and that’s ok since this is a standalone.  But I did feel as if I was missing something for not having read the previous books.  When we go on vacation, we don’t always know about the towns we pass through.  But some towns have an affect on us and we decide we need to take a look around.  This book has me looking forward to learning more about Moon Lake.  What’s good about this time of year where we start to read the holiday books coming out is that you might discover a new series.  You might also discover a new author, maybe reconnect with an author you haven’t read in a while, and maybe even discover a book that you want to read more than once.

Excerpt:
As soon he could, Graham exited the highway and stopped at a convenience mart for gas. It was a relief having something to do. If he didn’t stop reacting to Grace—his whole body on alert, his pulse pounding, his imagination racing to places it had no business going—well, it was going to be a very long trip.
“I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” blared from a speaker as Graham filled the tank. He turned up the collar on his coat, wishing he had on more comfortable clothes for the long drive.
He wished everything was more comfortable on this crazy drive. When he walked into the store, Grace was buying pretzels and a coffee. He got a coffee too, and paid for her things before she could protest. At the last second, he asked for a couple of lottery tickets, an instant scratch-off game and one of the daily numbers tickets.
“You still buy those?” she asked from her spot in front of him in line.
He used to buy them all the time. He hadn’t, though, since those days when they were broke and poor and winning would mean a ticket to a new life.
But today was…different. He’d bought it on impulse, maybe as a talisman for luck. To survive the drive intact. Or more than that. Something deep down inside made him buy it because it reminded him of the old days.
When they were broke. When all they had was a mattress on the floor and an old steel shelf from his dad’s garage where they kept their underwear and socks. When dreaming of winning the lottery brought visions of a less dumpy apartment, furniture, a car.
Those had been the happiest times of his life. They’d been so in love. They’d had everything and never even knew it. But of course he couldn’t say any of that.
“You sure you’re not hungry?” he asked. “It’s a five-hour drive in good weather.”
She looked hungry. He knew her well enough he could tell. She was a little pale, a trace of dark circles under her eyes. Or maybe she was like him, too nervous and keyed up to think about food. “We can stop and get something after we’re on the road for a while. Does that sound good?” he asked.
“I thought you hated to make stops,” she said, her mouth pulling up in a smile. “When we were married, I used to have to barter for pee breaks.”
“Maybe I’ve learned to be a little less…”
“Anal?”
“Ha ha. In all fairness, I recall several road trips where we made plenty of stops at rest areas but never got out of the car.”
That made her blush.
“We were young,” she said, clearing her throat. Their eyes met, and he could swear he saw a piece of the same heartbreak that was currently wreaking havoc with his entire body.
“We’re still young,” he said, his frustration coming through a little. It was just that they were acting like a pair of eighty-year-olds reminiscing over times that were gone forever.
They could still create good times.
Oh hell. There he went again. It had taken him so long to get over her. Longer yet to even look at another woman. And here he was, two years later, after just thirty minutes in her presence, fantasizing about everything he’d worked so hard to leave behind. Old habits died hard.
When the clerk handed him the lottery tickets, he pocketed the daily number one for later and handed the scratch-off one to Grace. Another old habit.
She looked at him and then the ticket and frowned. “You want me to scratch off the numbers?”
He nodded.
“You’re crazy,” she said.
“For old times’ sake,” he said. “Well, why not? We may as well start this journey off on the right foot.”
She rolled her eyes, but for a heartbeat, something flickered in her eyes. He wasn’t sure, but maybe she’d been touched a little by the corny gesture.
“Oh, all right,” she said, using her nail to scratch off the numbers.
“We didn’t win,” he said, looking over her shoulder. Of course they hadn’t. They’d both lost, badly, a long time ago. Except that had nothing to do with a lottery ticket.
