New York City, 1972.
Between Central Park and the East River sits an apartment building as tall as a castle and as orange as a sunset. The Wellraven barely pricks a skyline so grand, but its curious history reaches out through occupants, young and old.
Eleven stories chronicle the life and times of characters who cross paths and share destiny’s fire escape. Ghosts, gravity, romance, and secrets weave the communal narrative.
Step into the elevator. Push any button, but try to remember your way back out. Not everybody makes it.
Proceeds from this limited edition anthology will benefit VETSports, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Veterans with continuous opportunities to reintegrate into their communities through sports, community service, events, and partnerships.

A former model, a grumpy lawyer, and a single dad walk into an audition for a children’s musical… They’re all Miles Brodie. It’s only cute if you aren’t the director who’s being bribed to cast his daughter.
DEAR MS. CROSS,
Re: Our discussion
1. True. Casting my daughter as the lead in your musical could be considered bribery if people find out I’m investing in it, but no one needs to know. 2. I only want to hire you as Macy’s singing coach so her vocal skills will improve. 3. Maybe if you’d spent less time surfing and more on your singing career, you wouldn’t be in this financial predicament. 4. Re. your living situation—my neighbor has a guest house. If you cast Macy as Alice, I will pay for your first three months’ rent.
Do we have a deal?
Best regards, Miles Brodie
DEAR MR. BRODIE,
1. It absolutely is bribery, but I absolutely need that money for my production. Thanks! 2. It is very cute that you will do anything to get Macy this part, but I would only coach that sweet child as a favor to all mammals with functional hearing. 3. If I spend less time surfing, will you spend less time jogging on my beach with your shirt off? 4. You want to pay me to live next door so you don’t have to drive anywhere to frown at me? 5. I have another condition for casting Macy as Alice—you have to perform the part of the Cheshire Cat.
Before writing steamy romantic comedy novels, Kayley Loring got a BFA in creative writing from a Canadian university and had a fifteen-year career as a screenwriter in Los Angeles (under a different name). She mostly wrote PG-13 family comedies that studios would pay her lots of money for and then never make into movies. In 2017, she decided to move to the Pacific Northwest and write about all the fun stuff that she wasn’t allowed to write about in those PG-13 scripts. Now she’s an Amazon Top 25 bestselling author who is breathing cleaner air and writing dirtier words. It’s an adjustment she’s happily getting used to.

Not knowing can be lethal
Assaulted, left for dead, and amnesic, the woman who thinks her name is Alex, may be the only surviving victim of a killer who’s targeting prostitutes and leaving their bodies without fingertips to complicate their identification. Denver Homicide Detective Blake Halloran is sure she is connected to the other killings but he can’t identify her, even with her fingertips intact. And she can’t remember anything—including the face or name of the man who tried to kill her.
With each new victim, it becomes more crucial for Alex to remember what happened to her if Blake and his partner are to solve the murders, but how do you force someone to remember? As Blake’s strong attraction to her and his need to protect her grows, so does his uneasiness about the inability to identify her, whether she’s a villain or a victim, and whether her amnesia is real.
Det. Halloran is a man who solves mysteries and hopefully gets the bad guys. Alex is having memory issues which is why she comes in contact with our “lovable” detective. We have a mystery with suspense almost around every corner. Our author had me hooked from the moment I saw one of the narrators.
However, the author surprised me. I watch a lot of crime reality shows and this would fit in on any of them. Our narrators help me with that visual. I thought Mr. York to be the perfect voice for Det. Halloran. It brought my visuals to some of the shows I watch and the interviews with people involved in the case. Ms. Williams helps me to understand what Alex is going through and the frustration she feels at both the detective and her situation. Usually a story has secondary characters but in this case we have secondary narrators. They help to bring those secondary characters to life. It reminds me of the old-time radio shows.
Our author knows how to grab her reader’s attention. She gives both us and her characters surprises that we weren’t expecting. There were times we have to laugh and shake our head at Halloran’s expense. She also knows what’s needed in order for us to feel sorry for Alex. One thing about Alex was that she didn’t let her problems get her down. She also helps the reader at moments where you might hold your breath.
It wasn’t long before I realized that if not for a blog tour, I might not have discovered a new author – one I plan on checking out more of her audiobooks. Her book reminded me why I love the crime genre. Maybe it has even given me the incentive to read/listen to more books in this genre. Not everything has to be about romance. You may just discover a gem when you least expect it.
Helen Starbuck—no relation to the coffee bunch—lives in Arvada, Colorado, with her two cats and is a multiple award-winning author of Legacy of Secrets, Finding Alex, The Woman He Used to Know, and the Annie Collins Mystery Series. Helen likes stories about strong women and interesting men. She writes her mysteries from the perspective of an OR nurse and relies on her love of suspense and romance to write her standalone romantic suspense novels. Her theory is, if you don’t like life as it is, you can always write a different ending.

Dear Fiona,
I hope this letter finds you well—and by well, I mean significantly less infuriated than you were yesterday. I’ve wanted to continue our conversation from the night we met, but there are so many things I can’t say or do, now that I’m your professor.
As an anonymous letter writer, I can give you some idea of what I have planned for us, once the year is over. As an author, I can share my work in progress with you. Not for you to critique but to show you how much you mean to me.
When you’re done reading this page, destroy it—and then write me back. Don’t sign the letter. Don’t put a return address on the envelope. Mail it from a random mailbox.
Yours in problem solving, Me
P.S. I still think you’re wasting your talent on that historical romance novel. P.P.S. I really wanted to push you up against the door and kiss your beautiful, angry face. I will. One day.
***
Dear Emmett,
Your handwriting is almost as terrible as your mood swings, and it would have been my instinct to destroy that letter even if you hadn’t ordered me to.
If you show me your work in progress, I will critique it.
I am currently still too infuriated to write about all the other feelings I have for you.
Expect another letter soon.
Your problem and your solution, Me
P.S. I still think an overpaid, overrated, overly handsome bestselling author of thrillers has no business teaching creative writing at a prestigious New York university. P.P.S. To my great horror, I really wanted you to push me up against that door and kiss my angry face too. I understand now that your appalling way of treating me in class has been overcompensation, but I don’t forgive you for it. I’ll kiss you again, anyway. One day.
The author grabbed my attention right from the first word. I found it interesting that an author was writing a love story about an author. On top of that we’ve been given some secondary characters that I have never heard of being given their own voice. That right there is what left me riveted to everything that was going on.
What helped with that were the narrators that told me this story. They make it very difficult for me to decide if I ever will want to read the book. I enjoyed listening to them bringing all the characters to life. I’ve listened to plenty of duets but this is even better. So, you know there’s no good stopping point when life gets in the way.
Emmett is a character that you have to feel sorry for. He’s had his heart broken and surprise because things are about to change. Fiona is just starting on the next chapter of her life. If you love stories about a teacher and their student then your interest may be piqued. There is an age-gap but I didn’t really think about it. I was more interested in what these characters did and how they interacted with each other. And the author gives me a chuckle or two as the chapters go by.
My only sadness was how quickly the story was going by. This was my first book by Ms. Loring and it was a great introduction. I can’t wait to listen to the book again when I need to work out in the yard and need something that will take my mind off of how hot it’s getting outside. Then something to get me to laugh so I’m forgetting how sore I’m getting. Or when there’s nothing that I want to watch on the television and need a good book to pass the time.

As she closes in on her brother's murderer, the threats only escalate. He wasn't the only target, and now everyone she loves is in danger, further fueling Taya's need for revenge.
