Series: Hell's Handlers, Book One
Length: 8 hours 24 minutes

Rating:  4.5 Stars

Toni’s no stranger to making mistakes. She has experienced firsthand how walking down the wrong path can send life spiraling out of control. Fortunately, she had someone to drag her from the gutter and help set her on the right track. As penance for the poor choices of her past, she pledges to suppress her baser desires and focus on finding a steady, dependable man, even if that means embracing a boring lifestyle.

The last thing anyone would call Zach is dull. As Enforcer for the Hell's Handlers MC, he embodies the outlaw lifestyle. When Toni moves in next door, Zach can't resist the possibility of a quick, hot fling. But he soon discovers she's not the easy conquest he's used to.

While Zach works to convince Toni she belongs in his bed, a tenuous relationship with a local gang disintegrates and threatens his MC family. Zach's world is turned upside down when he's unable to keep the danger from touching his club.

As Toni fights to resist Zach's pull, her own peace is shattered by demons from her past. With enemies both old and new barreling down, she throws out her rules and turns to Zach for aid. Soon, she finds herself firmly entrenched in Zach's dangerous world.

Is it possible for her to curb her desires, or is she doomed to repeat the mistakes of her past?

None of it will matter if Zach can't keep their enemies at bay.

Lilly Atlas is the contemporary romance author of the award-nominated No Prisoners MC series. She’s a proud Navy wife, mother of two spunky girls, and one crazy pug. Every time Lilly downloads a new EBook, she expects her Kindle to tell her it’s exhausted and beg for some rest. Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet, so she can often be found absorbed in a good book.

  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    • I’ve worked with Noah and Erin for all of my books, so I think we have it down to a science by now. The set-up is all done through the ACX website. Then I send the manuscript and character notes on any accents, voice requests, a general description of the characters and their personalities. After that, my part is done until they send me files to listen to. I listen to the entire book, just to make sure everything flows well and I like what they’ve done with the characters—I always do. After any changes are made, the audiobook disappears into the world of Audible until it pops up for sale!
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format?
    • I suppose a textbook on Physics would be pretty dry and tough to listen to, but as far as fiction, and even most non-fiction, I think any book can be made into a quality audiobook. To me, it seems less the subject matter and more the quality of the writing and engagement of the narrators. Any book can be read in a monotone voice without much feeling and be underwhelming as opposed to read by narrators who are very engaged with the story and really feel the characters.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Absolutely. I have all my books on audio, so it’s a no-brainer by now.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • Originally, back when I wrote book one of the No Prisoners MC series, I listened to quite a few auditions from narrators. Noah’s was by far my favorite. He really captured the essence of my bad boy bikers. So, Striker is a solo narration by Noah. A bit later, I’d heard Noah and Erin’s duet narration of Curing Dr. Vincent and I just loved the duet narration. It takes the story to an entirely new level, so Erin was brought in for the rest of the series and beyond!
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I say, “Booo!” Audiobooks are amazing and just a different form of entertainment. I love how the medium is growing and expanding so rapidly. It’s a different experience than reading a book and so many people really enjoy listening to the narrators embody the characters. Also, there are so many people who are unable to read a book the traditional way for various reasons. Audiobooks gives those with visual impairments and other disabilities the chance to enjoy the works of millions of authors!
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • Usually if I’m in a total slump and the ideas aren’t flowing, I step away from the computer and just go about my day. Then I let my mind wander and most of the time something will come to me. I’ve also found that if I’m struggling with a scene and not liking how it’s turning out, I need to just push on through it and get something written. For me, it’s much easier to come back later and edit something to my liking than to abandon mid chapter and try to pick up where I left off later. Facebook usually helps me out of a reading slump. I belong to so many author/reader groups, I’m always finding great recommendations.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • I love writing series because as I am writing a book, I tend to give each ancillary character their own story in my head. Writing a series gives me the ability to expand on the universe I’ve created and give my secondary characters a voice and story. I love reading series for the very same reason.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • I’m more of a daydreamer than a night dreamer. I’ve had stress dreams about releases, but usually my characters don’t come to me in my dreams. During the day, however, I’m constantly drifting off, plotting, and imagining scenes to write.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?

    • Write, write, write! It’s the only way to grow and improve. Hire a professional editor. Beyond polishing and improving my books, I have learned so many tips and tricks from my editors about character development, plot development, and writing in general. It’s always a good idea to have outside professionals critique your work.
  • What’s next for you?
    • The second book in the Hell’s Handlers’ series, Maverick, released on Aug 14th. Noah and Erin are in the middle of recording Maverick so it shouldn’t be too much longer before the audio releases. I’m currently working on the third book, Jigsaw.

This is one of those books that I wouldn't mind having both the book and the audio version. That way if there comes a time when headphones aren't possible, I have access to the Hell's Handlers via a book. The author and the voice actors have me wishing that I wasn't such a chicken about riding a motorcycle. Although with the three wheel versions out now has me thinking maybe... But not too sure about the bugs flying my way - yuck. But I listen to my books while driving so I can always fantasize - especially during bad weather.

Mr. Levine and Ms. DeWard compliment each other - they have great chemistry. This book was a great platform for them. I had no trouble picturing the emotion, the troubles, and who their characters were. Toni has some issues that filter into the real world so it's possible that I may walk by someone that can relate to what Toni has had to experience. Mr. Levine has the perfect voice that has me picturing Zach with no problem. It's going to be hard not to picture him in an MC setting. He also does a pretty good job with accents.

Ms. Atlas does a great job with who the Hell's Handlers are and how they feel about each other. She shows what Zach is willing to do for Toni and what Toni is willing to do for Zach. I was lucky enough to listen to another one of her MC books and was so happy when I saw this book become available. Now I just have to try and be patient while waiting for the next book to come out. My problem is that I'm not very good at being patient.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. The only issue I had and it must be with my iPod, that while out working in the garden had to bend over and something seemed to happen. It would jump, it seemed like the narrators were stuttering, and it sounded like the sound was bouncing off a metal wall. That didn't stop me from enjoying what the narrators were reading to me though. It also won't stop me from listening to this book again. I'm just not sure that I would try and read the book because I wouldn't be able to do justice to the emotions these characters are feeling.

The story is sexy and hot but underlying all that is a lot of hurt and I mean emotional hurt. Alyssa and Derek are still dealing with something that hurt them to the core. It may also touch your heart and wish that you could do something to help alleviate their pain. It's a reminder that we can't always try and fix something by ourselves. There are certain times where we need a little help where we don't give up on our loved one. We just need direction to show us that love is there even though our heart may say otherwise for a little while. You almost stop thinking of our couple as fictional. You feel like you need to do something to show you care like making a donation in their name. But since they're fictional you can't do that but you can in honor of the author.

I already love Mr. Levine and Ms. DeWard as narrators and this is just another book to add to my ever growing list. They do a great job in humanizing Ms. Atlas' characters. I could almost picture who our main characters are - this is what narrators help the reader to do. This book is the only one, currently from the Trident Ink series that's available in audio. I don't see any more books in this series yet but our author has several others in another one of her series so I have a lot of catching up to do. And maybe by then we'll have more stories that revolve around Trident Ink.

After one unforgettable night with a dangerous outlaw, Fia knows she must limit contact with the kind of man who could never fit in her wealthy circle. Unfortunately, she can't keep their brief but passionate encounter far from her thoughts. When she seeks him out for reasons unrelated to their chemistry, the worst happens, and Fia is attacked by a madman. With her life turned upside down, she seeks help from the one person she can't get out of her mind.

Betrayed by someone he should have been able to trust above all, Acer spends the next two decades of his life avoiding entanglements that have any chance of ending with a knife in his back. The MC life provides a safe way to have personal connections and loyalty due to its simple rule: betray the club and punishment will be severe. Still, he keeps a large part of himself locked away inside, hidden even from his MC brothers. When the woman who's been messing with his head for months reappears in his life needing sanctuary, Acer jumps to her aid. He's committed to help her reclaim her life, but determined to keep her at arms-length in the process.

As Acer and Fia fight their growing feelings, his club is in danger from a new and different kind of enemy. Will his refusal to put his full trust in anyone, including the woman he's falling for, end up destroying more than betrayal ever could?

What did you love best about Acer?

It shows that a man may belong to an MC but Acer shows how much of a heart he has. The book also shows how much this group of men care about each other. And watch out if someone threatens those they love.

What other book might you compare Acer to and why?

I never like getting this question. It's not fair to the author asking me to compare this book to another. I either like, or not like a book, based on what I'm listening to and not how I feel it holds up to another.

What does Noah Michael Levine and Erin DeWard bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I feel that these two were the perfect voice for both Acer and Fia. Mr. Levine has me think of what Acer may look like as I listen to him. Ms. DeWard does a great job in bringing the pain that Fia feels to life. I had no trouble picturing these two as a couple with the help of our two narrators. After having them read to me, I don't know that I would go back and read the book. I enjoyed them doing that for me way too much.

Any additional comments?

This was the best MC I've listened to so far. It's like listening to a movie but with a black screen. We have to rely on the narrators to bring the author's characters to life. I have listened to Mr. Levine and Ms. DeWard before and I have to say this is my favorite by them to date. You can hear the fierceness and anger that Acer puts off but you can also hear how much he cares about Fia. Ms DeWard does a great job of showing the fear and timidity that was Fia. But she changes when she's in Acer's presence.

You could read this book by itself but there are characters from the previous two books that make appearances here. I have listened to Jester but this book reminded me that I still need to go back and listen to Striker. We think that men in the MC are big and beefy but then when they come in contact with their lady they seem to tone down a little but will go to any lengths to protect them.

It shows that you cannot make assumptions based on what a person looks like on the outside. You don't know their history, you don't know their economic status, and you don't know what has brought them to this current point in time. But having a narrator read to you helps a little with that. Should our author so decide, I'm looking forward to listening to more of her books.

Q&A with Author Lilly Atlas
  1. Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook.
    1. The first time was a bit daunting because I didn’t have a clue what I was doing, what the experience would be like, or if turning my book into an audiobook was a good financial decision. After some research, it looked like ACX would be the best option. I listed the first book in the series, Striker, on ACX and received a bunch of interviews. Noah was my clear favorite, and thankfully he’s a pro at this and was very patient and helpful with a total newbie. Now that we’re on to the fourth and fifth books, the process is easy and we have a great working relationship.
  2. Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    1. I didn’t really consider it until I was in the process of publishing the book. Honestly, publishing in general wasn’t necessarily something I thought I would do until I was about three quarters of the way finished with writing the book.
  3. How did you select your narrator?
    1. I chose Noah for the first book through ACX’s audition process. Striker received quite a few auditions and Noah’s was the clear favorite. After working with him and having a fantastic experience, I decided to use him and his partner Erin for the rest of the series. Having the duet narration really takes the storytelling to another level.
  4. How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    1. Before each book, I provide basic character sketches for any new characters. I highlight the way the character looks, attitudes, accents, and anything I think will help them bring the character to life. So far, Erin and Noah have done an fantastic job of making my visions a reality. Throughout recording, they will upload a chunk of chapters at a time to ACX and I’ll review and approve them.
  5. Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    1. The entire series takes place in the desert in Arizona. The town is fictional, but descriptions of the desert are based on real experiences. My husband is in the Navy and we were stationed with the Marines in Twentynine Palms CA for a few years. It doesn’t get much more desert than Twentynine Palms, at least not here in the US.
  6. How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    1. I’m still fairly new to the game, so I really haven’t had a slump as far as enthusiasm yet. I have three little kiddos at home, and spend three days per week writing. The other days I’m home with the munchkins. It’s proven to be a really great balance and keeps things fresh. On my writing days, I’m excited to get all the ideas that have been swirling around in my head out of there.
  7. Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    1. There are a few parts of the story that are quite emotionally charged. Erin and Noah do an amazing job of capturing the range of emotions the characters go through. That’s one of the things I love about audiobooks. You can really feel the story coming to life and experience it in a way that is very different from reading alone.
  8. If you had the power to time travel, would you use it? If yes, when and where would you go?
    1. Yes, I would definitely use it. I’d go to sometime in the future. As a bit of a technology junkie, I’d love to see what the world will look like in a hundred years.
  9. What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    1. Thankfully, I have yet to experience a true writing slump. There are times when I struggle through a scene or chapter. Either I’m not happy with the way it’s moving from my head to the computer, or I’m a bit stuck with what I want to say. I’ve found that as long as I write something, even if it ends up being complete junk, it helps me push through. Later, when my mind is fresh and I’ve stepped way from it, I come back and edit the scene until I’m satisfied.
  10. In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    1. So far I’ve only written in a series. I recently plotted out a book that I thought was going to be a stand alone, but as I developed the secondary characters, ideas began flowing for their stories as well. Guess that means it’s going to end up being a series instead of a stand alone!
  11. What's your favorite:
    1. Food - Bread. I’m holding out hope for a reverse-Atkins diet that is based around eating carbs.
    2. Song - Right now I’m obsessed with Sound of Silence by Disturbed, but I mostly listen to country. I’m sure it will change soon enough
    3. Book - I could never pick just one. As a child, it was A Little Princess, but as an adult, the list is too long to choose.
    4. Television show - Game of Thrones, hands down
    5. Movie -
    6. Band
    7. Sports team - Born and bred in NY so it’s the Yankees for me
    8. City - Washington DC. I right outside the city for many years and love everything about it (except the traffic).
  12. Are any of those things referenced in your work? There are a few things, music choices and such that are based on things I like. It’s easier to incorporate something you know about. In the book I’m working on now, the heroine is a physical therapist, which comes directly from my life. I worked as a PT for almost ten years before completely changing my career path and becoming a writer.
  13. What bits of advice would you give to aspiring authors?
    1. Hire a professional editor and really try to learn from them. Since I started this process, I’ve learned so much about writing, editing, marketing, business management, publishing, and the list goes on. What’s been extremely valuable, is all the lessons, tips, and tricks I’ve learned from my editors. I try to internalize everything they tell me and use it in subsequent books. It can be a bit daunting at first, especially the part where you sometimes have to put away your pride and take some criticism you may not agree with, but it’s a worthwhile learning experience every time.
  14. Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    1. Spend some time going through the auditions. You want to think about pacing, accent, do you like the way they do male and female parts if it’s just one narrator. There are a number of things to take into account. But don’t go crazy! For me, it was really a gut feeling about who I thought would portray my characters the best. Also, don’t be intimidated by ACX. Once you have the process under your belt once, it’s much easier. There is a book called the Audiobook Book that really helps walk you through the process of audiobook creation. It’s very helpful.
  15. What’s next for you?
    1. In terms of audiobooks, Erin and Noah have the next two books in the series, Hook and Lucky, in their queue, so they are forthcoming. Right now, I’m writing the last book in the No Prisoners MC series. Then, it’s on to a new series!
