Forbidden fruit tastes so much sweeter

When I left this town, I left behind a piece of my heart. I did it for us. Enlisted in the army, served overseas--it was all for a better life. A life she deserved. A farmhouse with a white picket fence, a dog, kids--the American Dream. Going home to her has always been the plan. I just didn't anticipate any other reasons for escaping this sandpit.

Now I'm back. Burying our dreams. A shattered heart and no mending in sight. Guarded like a shield to protect from a pain I never knew existed. I didn't think I could possibly move on, let alone with someone else. And, never with her sister.

My Thoughts:

Nash is doing what he has to do for his country.  Even though our soldiers are brave for what they do, we have to remember that they have a tough time when being separated from loved ones.  That part had me thinking about those that don’t have loved ones – especially around the holidays.  Why not do something simple, and not very expensive, and write a card or letter to let them know that someone is thinking about them.

If you are dealing with triggers, keep that in mind when reading this book.  Rowan was trying to make herself better after seeing how a disease affected her sister.  Nash and Rowan have something in common – they both know how to speak their mind.  But where he’s grumpy, she’s full of sass.

This story comes with a lot of emotion, you can feel the hurt and anger that is being expressed.  At first, I thought this book was going to be from Nash’s POV alone.  I wasn’t letting the author do her job.  He needed to tell us his story first before Rowan could tell us hers.  I liked that our author was brave enough to cover a disease that has been an issue in this country but not really spoken about.  It doesn’t just affect the person themselves but the whole family.  That’s one reason that this is so heart-wrenching.

If the author had delved into the subject too much it would have brought the whole story down.  But this time I let her do her job and she knew just the right moment to turn things around.  Sometimes a book becomes a page-turner right from the beginning while others may take a while and that was the case here.  She did a lot to set us up to get to know the main characters first before anything else could happen. Then we get a twist that I certainly never saw coming and that’s what I love about authors – I could never come up with anything like they can and that’s what keeps me well entertained and going back for more.  The ending I found both sweet and bittersweet.
